Andlau, France | A Visit to a Medieval French Town
Andlau, a lovely small town in Eastern France, is a wonderful place to visit and spend an hour or two wandering around.
The town, or commune, has been around for more than 1000 years and owes its existence to the Andlau Abbey in the center of the town.
It's most well-known for the delicious wine that's grown in the region and the Medieval features throughout the town also make it quite an interesting and picturesque place to visit.
Even though I visited Andlau in August there were hardly any other tourists around and I basically had the entire place to myself.
With a popular of just under 2,000 people it's a very quiet and peaceful place and it's nice to visit if you're looking to escape the tourist crowds of the towns nearby that are much busier.

Andlau, Mittelbergheim, Mont Saint Odile (Alsace) - France 4K Travel Channel
From Itterswiller we start our exploration tour through the heart of Alsace. First stop is wine town of Andlau. Andlau is about 5 km from Itterswiller. A narrow road runs through the vineyards and fruit orchards. The village lies in a small valley and is thus not oriented at a thoroughfare. The mountain slopes of the Vosges rise behind the village.
We park the car outside an old town gate. At the corner of Rue du Mal Foch, we find the restaurant Le Caveau Gourmand, which we visit again in the evening. One can eat quite excellent here.
Through the Rue Dr. Stoltz, we reach the town hall. Here, too, there is rural peace, although it is the French election day.
From a distance, we have already seen the mighty church Abbatiale Saint Pierre Et Paul d'Andlau. We pay a short visit to the abbey. The abbey was founded in 880 by Empress Richardis. She was the wife of Emperor Charles III and was repudiated by him. Later, she was canonized. Today her grave is a pilgrimage site. According to legend, a wild bear had shown her the place where she can find refuge. Therefore you can find several bear memorials in Andlau.
We are always amazed, of how much imagination the people of Alsace are developing. It is not just the facades of the half-timbered houses. Solar ovens, ornamented entrance doors or garden jewelry from scrap metal are some of the special things that stand out.
About 2.5 km from Andlau is the village of Mittelbergheim. It is again built along a road. A cross-street gives the place the floor plan of a cross. This arrangement may be related to the fact that the place is dominated by vineyards. The courtyards need a lot of space for the various machines and equipment.
From the distance, we have already seen two churches and wondered since the place is not too big. One is a Roman Catholic, the other is a Protestant church.
Particularly interesting are the old wine presses. You still find 8 wood wine presses in Mittelbergheim. One belonged to the tithe court. Built in 1727, it replaced the older one from 1572.

Von Itterswiller starten wir unsere Erkundungstour durch das Herz des Elsass. Erster Halt ist der Weinort Andlau.
Andlau liegt nur ca. 5 Km von Itterswiller entfernt. Eine schmale Straße verläuft durch die Weinberge und Obstplantagen. Es liegt in einer kleinen Talmulde und orientiert sich daher nicht an einer Durchgangsstraße. Direkt hinter dem Ort steigen die Berghänge der Vogesen an.
Wir finden einen Parkplatz außerhalb eines alten Stadttores. An der Ecke zur Rue du Mal Foch finden wir das Restaurant Le Caveau Gourmand, das wir dann am Abend nochmals besuchen. Hier kann man ganz ausgezeichnet essen.
Durch die Rue Dr. Stoltz erreichen wir das Rathaus. Auch hier herrscht ländliche Ruhe, obwohl französischer Wahltag ist.
Aus der Ferne haben wir schon die mächtige Kirche Abbatiale Saint Pierre Et Paul d'Andlau gesehen. Wir statten ihr einen kurzen Besuch ab. Die Abtei wurde 880 von Kaiserin Richardis gegründet. Sie war mit Kaiser Karl III. verheiratet und wurde von ihm verstoßen. Später wurde sie heiliggesprochen. Ihr Grab ist heute eine Wallfahrtsstätte. Der Legende nach hat ihr eine wilde Bärin den Ort gezeigt an dem sie Zuflucht finden kann, deshalb findet man in Andlau mehrere Bärendenkmäler.
Wir staunen immer wieder, wie viel Fantasie die Menschen im Elsass entwickeln. Es sind nicht nur die Fassaden der Fachwerkhäuser. Solaröfen, reichlich verzierte Eingangstüren oder Gartenschmuck aus Altmetall sind nur einige der speziellen Dinge, die uns auffallen.
Ca. 2.5 km von Andlau entfernt liegt Mittelbergheim. Die Ortschaft ist wieder längs einer Straße angesiedelt. Eine Querstraße verleiht dem Ort den Grundriss eines Kreuzes. Diese Anordnung mag damit zusammenhängen, dass der Ort vom Weinanbau dominiert wird. Die Höfe brauchen traditionell viel Platz für die diversen Maschinen und Geräte. Von der Ferne haben wir bereits zwei Kirchen gesehen und uns gewundert, da der Ort nicht allzu groß ist.
Eine ist eine Katholische, die andere eine evangelische Kirche. Besonders sehenswert sind die alten Holzkeltern. Im Mittelbergheim gibt es noch insgesamt 8 Holzkeltern, sowie die Kelter aus dem Jahre 1727, die zum Zehnthof gehörte. Sie ersetzte die um 1572 Erbaute.

Ribeauville, Alsace - France 4K Travel Channel
Ribeauvillé is our last stop during this visit to Alsace. The picturesque town is located around 55 km southwest of Strasbourg and 15 km northwest of Colmar. Any place to which we have gone in the Alsace till now has characteristics of its own and is not comparable with the others. This also applies to Ribeauville.
The most important street of the town is the Grand Rue. It cuts the town from east to west. Almost all important sights can be seen here.
We park the car in the Rue de Rempart de la Streng. After a short walk through the Rue des Juifs, we reach the Grand Rue. At the Place de la 1ère Armée, we film some statues of the Pfiffer (piper). On the first Sunday of September Ribeauville celebrates the Pfifferdaj, the fiddlers' festival. The Minstrels Festival is the oldest festival in Alsace. The minstrels of the entire region commemorate their former noble patron, the Lords Ribeaupierre of Ribeauvillé, with parades and artistic costumes. On this day they confirm the oath of allegiance.
Then we head west, past the town hall to the Butchers Tower, Tour de Bouchers. In this belfry from the 13th century, there is a bell which rang the nighttime curfew in the Middle Ages. In the passage, we see many swallows nest.
The Place de la Sinne is framed by magnificent half-timbered houses, most of which serve as a hotel. In the middle, you can see a beautiful fountain with a female statue in the middle, which symbolizes the town. It bears various symbols such as grapes, a wine barrel and coat of arms of the municipalities of the canton.
In the northern direction, you can reach St. Gregory's Church. But we continue towards the west until we almost reach the outskirts.
The three ruins of a castle Saint-Ulrich, Girsberg and Haut-Ribeaupierre sit enthroned above the vineyards on the outskirts of the town.
We turn around and watch the storks that live here. At the Place de la 1ère Armee we admire the facade of the Auberge at the Elephant of 1522, now the restaurant La Poste.
Next to it, one has built but a large nest for storks. We are looking for a place in the Winstub La Flammerie in the Grand Rue, from where we have a good overview.

Ribeauvillé ist unsere letzte Station bei diesem Besuch im Elsass. Die malerische Stadt liegt ca. 55 km südwestlich von Straßburg und 15 km nordwestlich von Colmar.
Jeder Ort, den wir bisher im Elsass besucht haben, hat eine eigene Charakteristik und ist nicht vergleichbar mit den Anderen. So ist es auch mit Ribeauville.
Die Grand Rue ist die wichtigste Straße der Stadt und durchschneidet sie von Osten nach Westen. Fast alle wichtigen Sehenswürdigkeiten sind hier zu sehen.
Wir parken in der Rue du Rempart de la Streng und erreichen nach kurzem Spaziergang durch die Rue des Juifs die Grand Rue. Am Place de la 1ère Armée filmen wir einige Statuen der Pfiffer (Pfeifer) von Ribeauville. Ihnen ist am ersten Sonntag im September ein eigener Feiertag, der Pfifferdaj, das Fest der Stadtmusikanten gewidmet. Es ist das älteste Fest im Elsass. In Umzügen und mit kunstvollen Kostümen gedenken die Straßenmusikanten der gesamten Region ihrem einstigen adligen Schutzherrn, dem Seigneur de Ribeaupierre. An diesem Tag bestätigen sie den erbrachten Treueid.
Anschließend gehen wir Richtung Westen, am Rathaus vorbei zum Metzgerturm (Tour de Bouchers). Im diesem Uhrturm aus dem 13. Jahrhundert befindet sich eine Glocke, die im Mittelalter die nächtliche Sperrstunde einläutete. In der Durchfahrt nisten eine Reihe von Schwalben.
Der Place de la Sinne ist eingerahmt von herrlichen Fachwerkhäusern, die mehrheitlich als Hotel dienen. In der Mitte seht ein schöner Brunnen mit einer weiblichen Statue in der Mitte, die die Stadt symbolisiert. Sie trägt verschiedenen Symbole wie Trauben, ein Weinfass und Wappen der Gemeinden des Kantons.
In nördlicher Richtung kann man von hier aus die St.-Gregor Kirche erreichen. Wir gehen weiter in Richtung Westen, bis wir beinahe den Stdtrand erreichen.
Über den Weinhängen am Rande der Stadt thronen die drei Burgruinen Ulrichsburg, Girsberg und Hohrappoltstein.
Wir kehren um und beobachten die Störche, die hier beheimatet sind. Am Place de la 1ère Armee bewundern wir die Fassade der ehemaligen Herberge zum Elefanten von 1522, heute die Winstub de la Poste.
Daneben hat man für Störche ein großes Nest gebaut. Wir suchen uns einen Platz in der Winstub La Flammerie in der Grand Rue, von wo aus wir einen guten Überblick haben.

Toledo Spain - A Must See Town and Perfect Day Trip From Madrid | 90+ Countries w/3 Kids

We were completely amazed. Walking through the streets of this city made us feel that we had gone back to the Middle Ages when Toledo was the capital of Spain. It was one of the most important centres in Europe from the Gothic epoch until 1560 and its buildings stand tall to witness this period in time.
The architecture is really impressive with the main sights being the large fortress (alcázar) built by the monarchs, the vast and richly decorated cathedral, and the impressive archdiocesan palace built by the prelates of Toledo, primates of the Spanish church.
However, apart from the stunning infrastructure we also realized that there are so many souvenir shops in the city that also express the culture and identity of Toledo. They are filled with beautiful handmade products.
The city is surrounded by the River Tajo on three sides and two medieval walls on the fourth side.

Obernai, Alsace - France 4K Travel Channel
Obernai is about 25 km southwest of Strasbourg. It was founded in the 7th century as a Franconian settlement. It was the seat of the Merovingian Athich, the father of St. Odilia, who founded the nearby abbey Mont Sainte Odile. In the 12th century, the town became a part of the Holy Roman Empire and was protected by a double city wall.
We start our city walk at the market square with the beautiful St. Odile fountain and the city hall. Behind it stands a 60 m high tower from the 16th century, the Belfry (Kapellturm). It is a leftover of a Virgin's Chapel. The chapel, built at the end of the 13th century was torn off in 1873. Since the middle ages, the market square has been the site with most of the leading public buildings.
In the east, the square ends with the Corn Exchange. It once served as a public butcher's shop. Behind the town hall is a very narrow alley, the Rue Ruelle des Juifs.
From the town hall, the Rue du Chanoine Gyss leads to the Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul. To the right hand is the old six-bucket well in Renaissance style. The roof is a canopy that rests on three Corinthian columns.
At first, we go from the city hall westwards and inspect the Romanesque House. Built about 1240, it was part of a tithe court.
Then we continue northwards to the Star Place. The name derives from an inn that stood here. In former times the mill canal used to flow across the square.
Along the city wall, we arrive at St. Peter and Paul's church. It is one of the largest Gothic churches in Alsace. Joseph Merklin built the organ inside. On the way back to the market square we pass the Six Buckets Well once again.
From the market square, we go to the Rue du General Gouraud and can take a look into the Fastinger Courtyard. Parts of the building date from the year 1418. Above the well, we see the carved head of an ox, the emblem of the butchers.
We continue our way to the western city gate. Next to it is a synagogue built in 1876. The 205 Jewish citizens of the city had financed it. The first Jewish community in Obernai was mentioned in 1215.

Unseren Rundgang beginnen wir am Marktplatz mit dem schönen Odilienbrunnen und dem Rathaus.Dahinter steht ein 60 m hoher Turm aus dem 16. Jahrhundert, der Kapellturm. Die dazu gehörige Marienkapelle aus dem 13. Jahrhundert ist 1873 abgerissen worden. Seit dem Mittelalter ist der Marktplatz mit den bedeutendsten Bürgerhäusern umgeben.
Im Osten schließt der Platz mit der Kornhalle, der Halle au blé ab. Sie diente einst als öffentliche Fleischerei. Direkt hinter dem Rathaus befindet sich eine extrem schmale Gasse, die Ruelle des Juifs.
Vom Rathaus gehen wir in nördlicher Richtung durch die Rue du Chanoine Gyss zur katholischen Pfarrkirche St. Peter und Paul. Zur rechten Hand befindet sich der Sechs-Eimer-Brunnen im Renaissance Stil. Er ist überdacht mit einem Baldachin, der auf drei korinthischen Säulen ruht.
Wir gehen vom Rathaus zunächst nach Westen und besichtigen das 1240 errichtete romanische Haus. Es war ursprünglich Teil eines Zehnthofes.
Danach gehen wir in nördlicher Richtung weiter zum Sternplatz, der nach dem früheren Wirtshaus zum Stern benannt ist. Der Platz wurde einst vom Mühlenkanal durchquert.
An der Stadtmauer entlang kommen wir zur Kirche Sankt Peter und Paul. Sie ist eine der größten gotischen Kirchen im Elsass. Im Inneren ist sie mir einer Joseph Merklin Orgel ausgestattet. Auf dem Weg zum Marktplatz passieren wir nochmals den Sechs-Eimer-Brunnen.
Vom Marktplatz zweigen wir ab in die Rue du General Gouraud und können einen Blick in den Innenhof des Fastingerhofs werfen. Teile des Gebäudes stammen aus dem Jahr 1418. Über dem Brunnen ist ein geschnitzter Rinderkopf zu sehen, das Wappen der Fleischer.
Wir gehen weiter zum westlichen Stadttor. Hier steht eine Synagoge aus dem Jahr 1876. Die 205 jüdischen Bürger der Stadt hatten sie finanziert. Die erste jüdische Gemeinde in Obernai wurde 1215 erwähnt.
