This year’s 18th edition again strikes a balance between emerging talents and esteemed veterans, commercial and independent fare, outrageous comedies, gripping dramas, and captivating documentaries, with in-person appearances by many of the filmmakers. This year, we are also pleased to present special screenings of both classic and new works by legendary filmmakers Paolo and Vittorio Taviani (Vittorio sadly passed away this April at age 88), as well as a new digital restoration of a signature work from iconoclast Marco Ferreri, alongside a new documentary about this important provocateur.
Open Roads: New Italian Cinema is co-presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Istituto Luce Cinecittà. Organized by Dennis Lim and Dan Sullivan, Film Society; and by Carla Cattani, Griselda Guerrasio, and Monique Catalino, Istituto Luce Cinecittà. Special thanks to: Italian Trade Commission; Italian Cultural Institute New York; Casa Italiana Zerilli Marimò—NYU; Antonio Monda.
The Film Society of Lincoln Center is devoted to supporting the art and elevating the craft of cinema. The only branch of the world-renowned arts complex Lincoln Center to shine a light on the everlasting yet evolving importance of the moving image, this nonprofit organization was founded in 1969 to celebrate American and international film. Via year-round programming and discussions; its annual New York Film Festival; and its publications, including Film Comment, the U.S.’s premier magazine about films and film culture, the Film Society endeavors to make the discussion and appreciation of cinema accessible to a broader audience, as well as to ensure that it will remain an essential art form for years to come.

Sesia Valley Fossil Supervolcano
A massive 282-million-year-old fossil supervolcano discovered by geologist and volcanologist James Quick, Southern Methodist University, in northern Italy's Sesia Valley holds clues — and ultimately answers — to critical scientific questions about the processes by which volcanoes erupt.
There are six active supervolcanoes in the world, including Yellowstone, Long Valley and Valles in the United States.
The Sesia Valley fossil supervolcano is unique for its unprecedented view of a supervolcano's internal plumbing to a depth of 15.5 miles.
Volcanic plumbing, normally hidden from examination deep within the earth, is the internal geological structure through which lava migrates from the earth's mantle up through the crust to ultimately explode.
No longer active, the Sesia Valley supervolcano last exploded more than 280 million years ago while the supervolcano was part of the supercontinent Pangea.
The supervolcano is a key feature of the UNESCO geopark Sesia-Val Grande Geopark.
