Dendermonde is a Belgian city and municipality located in the Flemish province of East Flanders in the Denderstreek. The municipality comprises the city of Dendermonde proper and the towns of Appels, Baasrode, Grembergen, Mespelare, Oudegem, Schoonaarde, and Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde. Dendermonde is located at the mouth of the river Dender, where it flows into the Scheldt. The town has a long-standing feud with Aalst , which dates back from the Middle Ages. The city is an administrative, commercial, educational, and medical centre for the surrounding region. The current Mayor of Dendermonde is Piet Buyse .

A beguinage, from the French term béguinage, is an architectural complex which was created to house beguines: lay religious women who lived in community without taking vows or retiring from the world. Originally the beguine institution was the convent, an association of beguines living together or in close proximity of each other under the guidance of a single superior, called a mistress or prioress. Although they were not usually referred as convent, in these houses dwelt a small number of women together: the houses small, informal, and often poor communities that emerged across Europe after the twelfth century. The Antwerp Central Station, also known as Middenstatie (Middle station) or Spoorwegkathedraal (Railroad Cathedral), was first used in 1905. The structure is made up from a steel platform covering and a stone station building in an eclectic style. Recently, the station was completely renovated and in 2007 a tunnel underneath the station and a part of Antwerp was opened, reverting the station’s status as a terminus where are all trains have to turn back. In 2009, the American magazine Newsweek chose the Antwerp Central Station as the fourth most beautiful train station in the world.

Belgium: Bruges - The Venice of the North

Bruges is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium. Along with a few other canal-based northern cities, such as Amsterdam, it is sometimes referred to as The Venice of the North.
The name probably derives from the Old Dutch for bridge
In the past Bruges had a strategic location at the crossroads of the northern Hanseatic League trade and the southern trade routes.
Bruges has most of its medieval architecture intact. The historic centre of Bruges has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

It's located in Antwerp and goes by two names: Kathedraalcafé (Cathedral Cafe) and Het Elfde Gebod (The Eleventh Commandment). I highly recommend the place if you're in the market for a tavern that offers both religious bric-a-brac and beer.

Belgium: Ooidonk Castle and its park

Ooidonk Castle is a monumental ancient moated castle south of the Belgian village of Sint-Maria-Leerne, not far from Deinze.

A fortress was first built on the site of the present castle in 1230, intended to defend the city of Ghent and to fortify the river Leie.
After its destruction is was rebuilt and enlarged from 1381 onwards. Moats were added, so that the castle could only be reached by drawbridge, and the defences were strengthened with four towers.

In the 15th century the castle came into the possession of the well-known French noble family of Montmorency.
In the turmoil of religious wars the castle was destroyed twice, in 1491 and in 1579. After the fire of 1579 it was rebuilt again, and this building survives as the present castle.

Ooidonk Castle is now privately owned.
The owner has expanded the castle, without prejudice to the playful Flemish Renaissance style. In the 19th century, the interior was renovated and the gardens were redesigned.
Ooidonk Castle is open to visitors since 1958 from 1 April to 15 September, the surrounding park (French gardens) can be visited during the whole year.

Belgium: The Beguinage and Almshouses in Bruges

The Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaerde is the only preserved beguinage in Bruges.
The Begijnhof is a haven of peace and tranquility . It was founded in 1245 by Margaret of Constantinople, Countess of Flanders, and is located just beside the Minnewaterpark . The Beguinage is characterized by the small white houses in the middle of the large garden with beautiful trees and flowers .
There are no more Beguines any more , but since 1927, a community of a Benedictine monastery, founded by Canon Hoornaert lives here. In that year the houses to the west were transformed and developed into the Monasterium Vineyard, a priory of Benedictine parish nuns .

Other important religious sites in the city include the numerous old almshouses.
Almshouses are charitable housing provided to enable people (typically elderly people who can no longer work to earn enough to pay rent) to live in a particular community. They are often targeted at the poor of a locality, at those from certain forms of previous employment, or their widows, and are generally maintained by a charity or the trustees of a bequest.
The Almshouses in Bruges belong to the Patrimony of the Public Social Welfare Centre ( Openbaar Centrum voor Maatschappelijk Welzijn - OCMW) and to provide habitation , to less well-off elderly.
