Goriano Sicoli is a comune and town in the Province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Goriano is a medieval town of about 600 people . A beautiful town on the top of a mountain in southeast Abruzzo , it was made somewhat famous by M. C. Escher in his print of the town which hangs in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Italian historical documents reference Goriano beginning around 816, but local residents claim the town is early Roman and existed in some form over 2000 years ago.     Rocca Calascio is a mountaintop fortress or rocca in the Province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo, Italy. At an elevation of 1,460 metres , Rocca Calascio is the highest fortress in the Apennines. Built of stone and masonry exclusively for military purposes and intended only to accommodate troops and never as residence for nobles, the fortress overlooks the Plain of Navelli at one of the highest points in the ancient Barony of Carapelle. Construction of the fortress started in the tenth century as a single watchtower. A walled courtyard with four cylindrical towers at the corners around a taller inner tower was added in the thirteenth century.
