Grand Lake is Colorado's largest and deepest natural lake. It is located in the headwaters of the Colorado River in Grand County, Colorado. On its north shore is located the historic and eponymous town of Grand Lake. Grand lake fills a glaciated valley that is dammed in part by glacial till from the Pinedale Glaciation, and is younger than about 12,000 years. Natural tributaries to the lake are the North Inlet and East Inlet, both of which flow out of Rocky Mountain National Park, which surrounds the lake on three sides: Grand Lake is located 1 mile from the Park's western entrance. Grand Lake was named Spirit Lake by the Ute Tribe because they believed the lake's cold waters to be the dwelling place of departed souls.

Grand Lake was called “Spirit Lake” by the Native Americans who camped by its shore. This time of year as fall and winter collide, it is breathtakingly beautiful and a fun place for your family to explore. Grand Lake was formed by glaciation 30,000 years ago and it is the headwaters of the Colorado River. It has a depth of 265 feet.
Grand Lake is the gateway to the western side of Rocky Mountain National Park. It is about a 35-40 minute drive from Winter Park. During the winter Grand Lake is known for its snowmobiling. It is consistently ranked in the top 10 snowmobiling destinations in the United States.

Exploring Colorado's national parks
Belgian-born photographer Johan Lolos has always dreamed of visiting Colorado, and having the opportunity to travel with his girlfriend, Delphine, was a “dream come true.” On their journey through the state, they toured Colorado’s four national parks and one of its national monuments, snapping pictures the entire way.
They started in the mountains between Estes Park and Grand Lake at Rocky Mountain National Park. The park is surrounded by 14,000-foot peaks and is thick with evergreens, wildlife, rivers, and streams.
Next they visited the deep canyons and the surreal starry skies of Colorado National Monument. They toured the 53-mile stretch of Black Canyon National Park by plane, and the ancient cliff-dwellings of Mesa Verde National Park on foot. They ended their journey in southern Colorado at Great Sand Dunes National Park, which contains a 30-square-mile dune field with the tallest sand dunes in the United States.
Amazed by the diverse landscapes, Johan says, “Colorado will stay in my mind for a long time.”
