Sungai Petani, or SP, is a town in Kuala Muda District, Kedah, in northern part of Malaysia.
Sungai Petani is Kedah's largest town and is located about 55 km south of Alor Setar, the capital of Kedah, and 33 km northeast of George Town, the capital ty of the neighbouring state of Penang.
Due to its close proximity to Penang, Sungai Petani is also part of Greater Penang, Sungai Petani has experienced heavy industrialisation since the 1990s, when Japanese and other international firms began to set up manufacturing plants around the town.
Sungai Petani has a high and medium-sized business community. A lot of small and medium industry also play a part in the local economy, producing many products, from semiconductors to television tubes and from textile to wood products. One of the examples is Sharp. Sungai Petani is also a booming business center with many large malls, franchise stores and business enclaves

Sungai Petani (abbreviated Sg. Petani or SP; Chinese: 双溪大年; Tamil: சுங்கை பட்டாணி) is a town in Kuala Muda District, Kedah, Malaysia. Sungai Petani is Kedah's largest town and is located about 55 km south of Alor Setar, the capital of Kedah, and 33 km northeast of George Town, the capital city of the neighbouring state of Penang.
Due to its close proximity to Penang, Sungai Petani is also part of Greater Penang, Malaysia's second largest conurbation, with the town's logistical needs being served by Penang's well developed transportation infrastructure. Sungai Petani has experienced heavy industrialisation since the 1990s, when Japanese and other international firms began to set up manufacturing plants around the town.

In Search of Anthony Burgess: Kuala Lumpur sordor
In Burgess's novel 'The Enemy in the Blanket', Victor Crabbe meets Anne Talbot at a cheap, squalid short-time hotel in Kuala Lumpur for wild adulterous sex sessions. They wallow in clandestine sordor. 'Secrecy. Nobody cares here. Nobody knows, priapic Victor tells wanton Anne. Maximal erotic fulfilment is their aim, living for the moment, to hell with their spouses, hang their respective marriages. 'Outside in the narrow street, British troops, repressed after their jungle stints, roared with drink, spilling long-saved dollars. Later they would fight, pass out, or pant in venery.'
It is not clear how much whoring Burgess did in La Línea de la Concepción while he was stationed during the Second World War in Gibraltar, but he certainly drank deeply of the wine of the country while on the Malay Peninsula and in Borneo. On his very first night in Singapore he picked up a Chinese lady of pleasure on Bugis Street and took her to 'a filthy hôtel de passe full of the noise of hoicking and spitting, termed by the cynical the call of the East. I entered her and entered the territory.' He found the whole experience 'enchanting'. Elsewhere in his writings, however, he indicates a preference for Malay prostitutes over Chinese ones. Take, for instance, this extract from the 1959 novel 'Beds in the East': 'And now Crabbe [engaging in a night of harlotry] had his own feather-light chattering burden [a Chinese prostitute]. Desire for a Chinese woman did not come easily: even at their lowest social level they were works of art, engendering a hardly kinetic emotion.' In his 'Confessions' he writes: 'I had better say a little about love-making in the East. With Malays there were certain restrictions on the amatory forms, laid down by Islam, so that only the posture of Venus observed was officially permitted. Islamic women were supposed to be passive houris. The demands of Islamic wives for frequent sexual congress did not indicate true sensual appetite: they were a test of the fidelity of their husbands. A Malay female body, musky, shapely, golden-brown, was always a delight. Malay women rarely ran to fat, which was reserved to the wives of the Chinese towkays and was an index of prosperity. Malay women kept their figures after childbirth through a kind of ritual roasting over an open fire, tightly wrapped in greased winding-sheets. They walked proudly in sarongs and bajus, their glossy hair permanently waved, their heels high. They were seductive as few white women are. Lying with Rahimah I regretted my own whiteness: a white skin was an eccentricity and looked like a disease. Simple though Malay sex was, it had an abundant vocabulary. To copulate was jamah or berjima or juma'at or bersatu (literally to become one), or sa-tuboh, asmara, betanchok (this term was peculiar to Perak), ayut, ayok and much much more. There was even a special term for sexual congress after the forty-day birth taboo — pechah kepala barut — and there were two for the boy's initiation after circumcision — menyepoh tua, with someone older, menyepoh muda, with someone younger. The orgasm was dignified with an Arabic loanword, shahuat, or colloquially called rumah sudah ratip — literally, the structure has gone into an ecstatic trance, ratip or ratib being properly the term for the transport produced by the constant repetition of the holy name Allah. Where the Western term for experiencing orgasm is, in whatever language, to come, the Malay mind, using keluar, thinks of going out, leaving the body, floating on air.'

Early expeditions into the historical sites in the Muda River corridor was more of an activity at uncovering ancient history carried out by colonial officers since the 1830s. Lt. Col. Hugh Low, the Superintendent of Province Wellesley, Prince of Wales Island, reported the finding of brick and stone structures at Srokam and Sungai Mas. Sungai Mas was said to be a tributary of Muda River. However, until 1974 there was no follow up information on Sungai Mas. Researches and studies by G.W. Earl, P.V. van Stein Callenfels, I.H.N. Evan, Wales H.G. Quaritch, Wales D.C. Quaritch, Michael Sullivan. R. Braddel, B.A.V. Peacock, the Archeological Society of the University of Malaya, Fong See Tonn, Wang Gungwu, K.S. Tregoning, J. Staargardt, and Leong Sau Heng did not include Sungai Mas. The location of this historical archeological site resurfaced in the map of ancient historical site distribution in Bujang Valley in 1974, when al Rahsid, from the National Museum, played a leading role in a special project through the National Archeological Survey and Research Unit (NASRU). However, there was no written record to be used as a source of reference. This situation continued until 1980, because Adi Taha from the Museum Department and Nik Hassan Suhaimi Abdul Rahman from the National University of Malaysia (UKM) concentrated their activities at excavating sites in Chandi Pengkalan Bujang (sites 21 & 22), Chandi Bukit Pendiat (site 17), Chandi Bukit Bendang Dalam (site 50) and in Gua Bukit Penjara, Pantai Merdeka.

Roti canai (pronunciation tʃanai) or roti cane (pronunciation tʃane) is a type of Indian-influenced flatbread found in Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore. It is often sold in Mamak stalls in Malaysia; also in Malay, Minangkabau and Aceh restaurants in Indonesia. It is known as roti prata in Southern Malaysia and Singapore, and is similar to the Indian Kerala porotta. It is also found throughout Thailand, where it is called Ro Tee and is typically sold by Muslims, most often from street carts, and is usually Halal.

Teluk Kumbar
District: Southwest Penang Island
Teluk Kumbar (In Chinese: 公巴, Kong-Pa in Penang Hokkien) is one of the district in Penang Island, located just between Bayan Lepas and Balik Pulau in Penang, Malaysia. The name Teluk comes from it location at a bay by the sea and Kumbar comes from a thorny palm type vegetation that grows wildly mostly on the inner hilly area. It was orally told by olds that during it was opened by some Achenese, the land is covered by kumbar clump and the name came from it. The palm, with it sour fruits, now is found rarely on the hilly area and it mostly cleared and replaced by durian orchards.
