Russian school helps Syrian refugees adapt
(22 Nov 2016) The non-profit Civic Assistance Committee, with backing from the UN, has opened a Russian language school for Syrian refugees in Moscow region to help them adapt to life in the country.
According to the committee, more than 1,000 refugees are now living in Losino-Petrovsky, but only two Syrians have full refugee status and almost a thousand have temporary refugee papers, with which the children cannot access Russian schools.
Most of the Syrian refugees in Russia are, so-called refugees 'sur place', which means that they arrived here before the war started and then they just couldn't go back and renew their working visas. Most of them were working migrants. After that they brought their families, wives, kids, said Project Coordinator of the Civic Assistance Committee, Natalia Gontsova.
The centre will accept not only children, but also adults who need help to readjust to their new life.
The lessons will focus on learning Russian as a foreign language, but in the near future the programme will be expanded to include courses such as those designed to help Syrian children prepare for Russian schools.
We are opening the centre because we want the children, who live here, to learn the Russian language and our culture, and also that they do not forget their own language. Just recently we have been asked to find an Arabic language teacher too explained the Chairwoman of the Civic Assistance Committee, Svetlana Gannushkina.
In 2015, the Civic Assistance Committee was added to the list of Foreign Agent organisations by the Russian Ministry of Justice.
Gontsova says it has been difficult since then because many organisations withdrew their funding.
Now, the centre is being fully funded by the UNHCR.
