It is located in the center of the oblast just north of the federal city of Moscow. The area of the district is 431.16 square kilometers . Its administrative center is the city of Mytishchi. As of the 2010 Census, the total population of the district was 203,393, with the population of Mytishchi accounting for 85.1% of that number.

The museum consists of open-air and indoor permanent exhibitions of many famous tanks and armored vehicles from throughout the 20th and 21st centuries . It is also known to house and display many unique and one-of-a-kind military vehicles, such as the Nazi German Panzer VIII Maus super-heavy tank, Troyanov's Object 279 Kotin heavy tank and a Karl-Gerät heavy self-propelled artillery, amongst other single or limited-production prototypes from the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany.
