Penrith is a town in Cumbria’s Eden Valley, England. It’s known for the massive 14th-century Penrith Castle, set on a grassy meadow. Nearby, the Penrith Museum houses Roman pottery and objects reflecting local history. To the north is Beacon Hill, with its Penrith Beacon monument and panoramic views. South of town are the Norman Brougham Castle and the prehistoric monument of Mayburgh Henge.
Penrith is a market town and civil parish in the county of Cumbria, England. Penrith lies less than 3 miles (5 km) outside the boundaries of the Lake District National Park. Historically a part of Cumberland, Penrith's local authority is currently Eden District Council, which is based in the town. Penrith was formerly the seat of both Penrith Urban and Rural District Councils. From 1974 to 2015, Penrith had no town council of its own, and was an unparished area. Penrith Town Council was formed in 2015 and the first elections to the Town Council Civil parish took place on May 7, 2015.
The main church is St. Andrew's, built from 1720 to 1722 in an imposing Grecian style, abutting an earlier 13th-century tower. The churchyard has some ancient crosses and hogback tombstones in it known now as Giant's Grave, and Giant's Thumb which is the remains of a Norse cross dated to 920 AD. The ruins of Penrith Castle (14th-16th centuries) can be seen from the adjacent railway station. The castle is run as a visitor attraction by English Heritage. To the south-east of the town are the more substantial ruins of Brougham Castle, also under the protection of English Heritage. To the south of the town are the ancient henge sites known as Mayburgh Henge and King Arthur's Round Table. Both are under the protection of English Heritage.
In the centre of the town is the Clock Tower, erected in 1861 to commemorate Philip Musgrave of Edenhall. Hutton Hall, in Friargate preserves a 14th-century pele tower at the rear, attached to an 18th-century building. Dockray Hall (formerly the Gloucester Arms) is said to date from c1470 and may incorporate the remains of another pele tower. Penrith has been noted for the number of wells in and around the town, and well-dressing ceremonies were commonplace on certain days in the month of May. Three miles south-east of the town, on the River Eamont are the Giants' caves, where the well was dedicated to St. Ninian. The caves are enlarged out of Lower Permian sandstones and their associated breccias and purple shales.
Just to the north of the town is the wooded signal-beacon hill, naturally named Beacon Hill, but originally called Penrith Fell. It last use was probably in 1804 in the war against Napoleon. Traditionally, the Beacon Pike was used to warn of approaching danger from Scotland. Today, although surrounded by a commercial woodland owned by Lowther Estates, the hill still contains some natural woodlands and is a popular local and tourist attraction. On a clear day the majority of the Eden Valley, the local fells, Pennines and parts of the North Lakes can be seen. It is almost certain that the Beacon Hill gave Penrith its name - in Celtic - of red hill. A fibreglass 550 cm (18 ft)-tall statue of King Kong once stood in the Skirsgill Auction Mart.

3 Days in the Lake District | London to the Lake District Vlog!
I spent 3 days in the Lake District with Rabbie's Tours on their Lake District Explorer Tour and I had such an amazing time! I couldn't believe why it had taken me so long to visit, the Lake District is amazing!
I travelled to Penrith from London Euston Station by train. I then spent the afternoon exploring Bowness-on-Windermere and Windermere by walking up to Orrest Head and then taking a sunset evening boat cruise.
Day 2 included lots of lakes like Ullswater Lake, Crummock Water, Buttermere Water, plus Aira Force Waterfall, the largest waterfall in the Lake District, lots of views and a lunch stop in Keswick.
Day 3 took us to the pretty towns of Hawkshead and Grasmere, plsu we got to see the famous poet Wordsworth's house. After this I jumped back on the train back to London from the Lake District and could not believe how much I saw in 3 days!

The City of Carlisle is a local government district of Cumbria, England, with the status of a city and non-metropolitan district. It is named after its largest settlement, Carlisle, aka Carlizzle, but covers a far larger area which includes the towns of Brampton and Longtown, as well as outlying villages including Dalston, Scotby and Wetheral. The city has a population of 107,524 and an area of 1,039.97 square kilometres (402 sq mi), making it the largest city in England by area (although the majority of its territory is not urbanised, but rural).
The current city boundaries were set as part of the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972, and cover an amalgamation of two former local government districts—the City and County Borough of Carlisle and the Border Rural District of Cumberland. The City of Carlisle shares a border with Scotland (to the north), and is bounded on the southwest by the borough of Allerdale, and on the south by the district of Eden. The county of Northumberland is to the east.
Although the present boundaries date to the 20th century, the city traces its origins to a 1st-century Roman outpost associated with Hadrian's Wall. The Brythonic settlement that expanded from this outpost was destroyed by the Danes in 875. Thereafter the region formed part of the Southern Uplands of Scotland, until colonised under King William II of England in 1092. William II built Carlisle Castle, which houses a military museum. Carlisle Cathedral, founded in the 12th century, is one of the smallest in England.
A border city, and the second most northerly city in England, Carlisle predominantly spans the flood plain of the River Eden. Commercially, it is linked to the rest of England via the M6 motorway, and to the Scottish Lowlands via the A74(M) and M74 motorways.

В марте 2005 года Джим Тутл, член городского совета от либеральных демократов внёс предложение убрать камень из города или совсем ликвидировать. Основанием послужило мнение местных жителей, что этот камень навлек на их город множество несчастий: после установки камня Карлайл пострадал от эпидемии ящура, его жители гибли в наводнениях и массово теряли работу, и даже местная футбольная команда пришла в упадок. Грэхам Доу, протестантский епископ Карлайлский, поддержал мнение местных жителей.
Решением собрания городского совета 8 марта 2005 года это предложение было отклонено.
