Rhayader is a market town, community and electoral ward in Radnorshire, Powys, central Wales. The town is one of the principal centres of population in the mostly Anglicised historic county of Radnorshire and has a population of 2,088. 55% of the community have some form of Welsh identity according to the 2011 census.It is the first town on the banks of the River Wye, 20 miles from its source on the Plynlimon range of the Cambrian Mountains. It is situated roughly midway between North and south Wales on the A470, 13 miles north of Builth Wells and 30 miles east of Aberystwyth on the A44 - two of Wales' most important trunk roads.

The Elan Valley Reservoirs are a chain of man-made lakes created from damming the Elan and Claerwen rivers within the Elan Valley in Mid Wales. The reservoirs, which were built by the Birmingham Corporation Water Department, provide clean drinking water for Birmingham in the West Midlands of England. The five lakes are known as the Claerwen, Craig-goch, Pen-y-garreg, Garreg-ddu, and Caban-coch.Water from the reservoirs is carried by gravity to Frankley Reservoir in Birmingham via the Elan aqueduct. Pumping is not required because the network drops 52 metres along its 73 miles length from its source to Frankley. Man made waterfalls are incredible, breathtaking scenery. Elan Valley is probably my favourite place in Wales, it's six minutes drive from Rhayader were I stayed.

Tell the Royal couple to come for their honey moon to this location, they'll love it or at least visit it yourself!

If you like contemporary art, then you must see the Murals of Belfast and Londonderry. Two nights at Wye Valley Campsite in Wales with friends and a shout out from Simon Mayo.

Campsite Review: The site is in a great location, just 10 minutes walk from the centre of Rhayader where there is a good selection of pubs and restaurants. It is by the river Wye and we had a swim in the river. The shower block is quite basic, the website says it will be refurbished soon. We were on the grass, the hard standing side seemed quite dusty. If its dry I'd recommend the grass side.

Things to do:

Visit the Dams, there are several in the area and we did a day on the bikes and a day walking, both were excellent. The routes are:

Go and see the Red Kites being fed. These birds are big and you'll see them flying around during the day but at about 3pm a local farmer puts food out for them and it is a sight worth seeing, there are maybe a 100 of them in the skies swooping down to take the food.
