Over twenty times a year, there is an amazing natural show as exceptionally high tides totally surround the Mont-Saint-Michel.

Kurzinformation über Mont-Saint-Michel:
Auf einer kleinen Insel befindet sich, umgeben von Befestigungsanlagen und Schutzwällen, die ursprünglich im 8. Jahrhundert als Kapelle begründete und später ausgebaute Anlage. 966 wurde sie den Benediktinern übergeben, im 11. Jahrhundert diente sie als Festung. Sie war der einzige (bedeutende) Ort in Nordfrankreich, der während des Hundertjährigen Kriegs nicht in die Hände der Engländer fiel.
Wer die Anlage besuchen will und mit dem eigenen Fahrzeug anreist, findet in ca. 2,5 km Entfernung einen große Parkplatzanlage, von wo aus (kostenlose) Shuttle-Busse eingesetzt werden. Man kann sich aber auch die Zeit nehmen, den Weg zu Fuß zurückzulegen und dabei die Aussicht auf den Mont-Saint-Michel zu genießen. Da es sich um eine Insel handelt, sind dann aber die Gezeiten zu beachten! Die Zufahrt mit privaten Fahrzeugen ist nicht mehr möglich.

Le Mont-Saint-Michel & its bay - world heritage #07
Le Mont-Saint-Michel ... wrapped tightly by wind, water, sand, and history.
Le Mont-Saint-Michel and the bay surrounding it are located on the northwest coast of France, on the border between Normandy and Brittany. The sea and the bay are key parts of Mont-Saint-Michel's history.
Wind, sand and water form the landscape. The land along the bay is of sand, clay and stone. The effect of tides and sandbars down the ages has given the area a remarkable appearance.
Visitors stroll along the boulevard searching for the local delicacy: the oyster.
Mussels and oysters are part of the bay's culture or better, the bay gained a certain fame through them. At low tide the farmers harvest shellfish which are large enough and take them to the market or auction.
Officially designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, this site is to be safeguarded for the future as a testimony to its enduring past.
