Day 108 - 2018 North American Tour

I landed in New Orleans after a long RedEye flight starting at 8:30pm the night before in Boise. I was running on fumes I guess because I hadn’t slept a wink yet. But New Orleans was calling so I bucked up grabbed an Uber to go to Enterprise Rental Cars. Inside tip, Enterprise has an office inside airport or 3 miles away. The one 3 miles away saved me $150.00 and they upgraded me to a nice Ford Edge SUV!
I drove straight down to the French Quarter and my first stop of course was Cafe DuMonde. I live their beignets (fried dough with powdered sugar), I also love the Cafe au Lait. After breakfast snack I toured the French Market and bought a couple of cool earrings. I lost my guitar earring over a year ago and have been looking ever since for some kind of replacement. I found a cool Opal/Terling Silver Manta Ray earring (my spirit animal and birthstone) also a real cool Anchor earring. Both for $14.00. What?! Yes that’s what I said. I decided snacking throughout the day would be more fun than sitting down to a full meal, so I then tried the Alligator Sausage. Awesome! Super tender.
I walked all over and stopped at Jean Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop, the city’s oldest established watering hole. I had an Anita Amber and checked out the cool architecture. I walked about 15,000 steps according to my FitBit. New Orleans is one of my favorite city’s in the world. If you like history, mystery, oh and did I mention food and drink? I also did a lot of research for my upcoming novel “Blue Waters.” I owe Wayne Stinnett for sparking my interest in writing again.
I stopped off at a place I’d never been to before called NOLA Poboy mainly to charge my phone and get a water, then I saw they had chicken and sausage gumbo and crawfish pies. I make damn good, I mean damn good gumbo but theirs blew mine away. That’s saying a lot. The crawfish pie was crunchy yet tender. Basically perfect! They aren’t afraid to season there so if you like spicy, you’ll love NOLA Poboys Shop.
I drove over to Marie Laveau’s grave site. It’s spooky every time and I get a real feeling something evil is in that tomb. She was known as the Voodoo queen and the most famous VooDoo Priestess of all time.
After a little more driving around, I heads towards Slidell to my good friends house, Fred and Karen Thoede. I love their home. It’s welcoming a full of pineapples everywhere. Psych! We had peeled shrimp
And Karen’s famous Artichoke dip, ending with Fireball Cheesecake Shots. Hot damn! It was a gray day and by 11:00pm when I finally went to sleep I had been awake almost 38 hours straight! I slept like death! Woke up feeling revived!

A Danse Macabre in Riquewihr, Alsace, France
The deal was, the guy was the administrator of the hospital, and there were plagues and such, and although he had the means to build this fine house, a skyscraper and a palace by standards then, it was considered more than a bit questionable, taste-wise, for him to put something showing death right up there in public. But people are such dopes! Such hypocrites! They probably dug this like crazy!
Danse macabres were popular in France in the late 15th century. For about 400 years, they were painted inside churches and put in other special places (sometimes, even outdoors!) so that people could see a story.
Most people were illiterate then, of course. Out in Brittany, France, if you could read or write, you were considered a saint! That is why you have all these towns out there with names such as Saint Méen and such. It was just a local guy, possibly affiliated with the clergy but maybe just some civil servant of some sort, or someone who'd had a patron who had paid for his (sometimes hers, but that was very rare) education . . . and people were just in awe of this person! Cuz this person had THE POWER! The pen is mightier than the sword!
Can you imagine the power you would have if you were the only person locally who could read or write?
That's how things were, back in the old days!
People were not even allowed to own Bibles! Those were only for kings and queens, and people of high rank, and they had to have the money and the influence to get permission from the Church to have their own Bible!
The congregations were just told to submit and shut up and listen to the masses being said in Latin, a mysterious language that only the priests and clergy, the select, could understand!
An exception to all this are the Presbyterians, a Scottish-type Protestant strain, who studied Hebrew in order to understand the Bible better!
(You see graves of Presbyterians here in France with Hebrew on them, and you mistake them for a Jewish grave, but no, that is not the case at all!)

By the end of the 15th century, people were way less awed by these danse macabres, so they fell out of style. There are less than half a dozen left in all of France! They were painted over, and forgotten. Some have been found quite by accident! It's really fascinating!
In a danse macabre, the people were shown that DEATH DANCES WITH US ALL. No matter who we are, king or queen or bigshot millionaire or ordinary peasant, it does not matter, because when Death comes a'-callin', we must take Its hand and go with It!
If we are good, I believe we go to a better place, or a better reincarnation, and we rest in peace. If we are bad, we must pay! I do believe this, I really do!
Riquewihr is one of the most fabulous and charming towns in all of Alsace, which is in France, and which used to be Germany. It was also known formerly as The Rhineland. Many Pennsylvania Dutch people came from here, and there is a huge tradition of Jews here, and their story in Riquewihr is particularly tragic!

Val Thorens 2018 & 2019 Guide 4k
Located in the Three Valleys ski area, at an altitude of 2,300 metres above sea level, Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Europe.
Thanks to its 600 Kilometers of connected Ski Runs, the Three Valleys ski area is considered the best in the world. Couple that with the outstanding night life and après ski scene, and Val Thorens is probably the best ski resort in the world.
In this video, I’ll show you the most important things you need to know before booking a vacation in Val Thorens,
And if you stick around until the end of the video, I’ll give you some great tips that will help you make better decisions and save money. How do you get to Val Thorens?
The closest airports to Val Thorens are Chambery, Lyon And Geneva, with transfer times of 2 hours, 2 hours and 45 minutes, and 3 hours and 15 minutes respectively.
But do be aware, French Holiday season kicks in on the Saturday of the 2nd week of February and 2nd week of March, and massive traffic jams may cause transfer times to extend to as long as eight hours, so planning ahead is vital!
If you’re coming on the train, the nearest train stop is in the town of Moutier, from where you’ll need to take a 1 hour bus journey to Val Thorens.
Overall, there are 9 black runs, 30 red runs, 35 blue runs, and 11 green runs in the ski area of Val Thorens.
For intermediate to advanced skiers, I recommend buying the 3 Valley skips which cost 300 euros for 6 days and are worth every penny.
Take note that the 3 Valleys ski area has a shorter ski season than Val Thorens, which spread from around December 10th to April 20th each year.
Val Thorens has one of the longest ski seasons around, beginning in mid-November, and lasting until early May, after the famous Dutch Week Festival.

So, before we wrap up, here are my ratings for Val Thorens:
For snowboarders, it’s a 9, Together with the 3 Valleys there are endless possibilities for snowboarders. The fact that along the snow park there is a drug lift, damages the otherwise amazing 10 score.
For skiers for all levels: it’s a 9. The fact that the runs in Val Thorens itself are above the tree line make the view a little boring.
For freestylers, also a 9, again just because of the drug lift in the snow park.
For free riders, a perfect 10. Together with the 3 valleys there is indeed the largest area of off-piste than anywhere else in the world.
For Night life: another 10. Many packed bars for every taste, where you can party in a packed place with energy from 4 pm ‘til 4 am, every night.
Après ski: it’s a 10. The Foley Douce is the best après ski bar in the world today
Resort Charm: 7.5. The absence of trees makes it a little bit boring, but the many chairlifts and little ski runs crossing the village, gives it a unique charm all of its own.
My total, overall score for Val Thorens sits at a 9, and for young people and party lovers it is probably the best ski resort in the world today.
My bonus tips for Val Thorens:
Because Val Thorens is so high, it takes time to the body to acclimate and you are likely to feel exhausted for the first 2 days.
My recommendation is not to party hard on these nights if at all because you will have little energy, and if you drink you will probably suffer quite a harsh hangover.
The reason you haven’t seen nightlife shots in this video is because
The 2nd tip is not to come to Val Thorens by car, as there are only 3 designated parking garages that cost 70 euros per week. Everything you need is within easy walking distance, and on-street parking will land you a ticket, so it’s unlikely you’ll need the car for the duration of your visit anyway.
