Sandnessjøen is a town and the administrative centre of Alstahaug Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. Sandnessjøen was granted special trading privileges in the late 1600s and it received town status in 1999. Sandnessjøen is located on the island of Alsta, just west of the De syv søstre mountain range.The town is a transportation hub for the Helgeland region, as well as a commercial and business centre for the region.     The Helgeland Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge that crosses the Leirfjorden between the mainland and the island of Alsta in Nordland county, Norway. The town of Sandnessjøen is located just southwest of the bridge on the island. The Helgeland Bridge was designed by Holger S. Svensson. Construction began in 1989 and it was finished in 1991. The bridge officially opened in July 1991. Construction cost was 200 million NOK. The bridge was a toll bridge until 23 June 2005.The 1,065-metre-long bridge is made up of 12 spans, the longest of which is 425 metres long. The maximum clearance to the sea below the bridge is 45 metres . The foundations extend to a depth of 31 metres . The bridge is built out of pre-stressed and reinforced concrete and steel cables.
