The Ancient Roman Ruins of Salona - Croatia HD
Salona was an ancient city and capital of Dalmatae in the time of the Roman empire. Dalmatae is modern day Dalmatia, part of Croatia, and Salona is modern day Solin. Colonia Martia Iulia Salona (full name of the ancient city) was founded after the Roman civil wars under Julius Caesar, but it's roots date back in the time of the Greeks. In the time of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, he built a palace nearby, this structure, known as Diocletian's Palace, became the core of the modern city of Split. Salona was destroyed in the invasions of the Avars and Slavs in the sixth and seventh centuries CE. Today only shells remain of this ancient city and they are in order of appearance: Amphitheatre, Basilica of the Five Martyrs, Theatre & Forum, Five Bridges, Episcopal center & city baths and Manastirine.

Podstrana is a small town near Split, and a perfect haven to escape the crowds of the largest city in Dalmatia. Situated at the foot of Perun, the slope of mountain Mosor, Podstrana consists of five villages; the oldest one Gornja Podstrana is situated at an altitude of 290 meters, on the slopes of Perun. Other villages, Grljanac, Strozanac, Saint Martin and Mutogras are coastal villages.
During recent years Podstrana has really capitalized on its top location on the Adriatic Sea. Podstrana is developing at an increasing rate as an elite, Split suburb. If you enjoy history and mythology, then you're in for a treat in Podstrana. Believe it or not, King Arthur once lived in Podstrana! Okay, not exactly, but Lucius Artorius Castus did and he is considered to be a potential historical basis for King Arthur by many renowned historians, including the British! Lucius Artorius Castus' sarcophagus was found in Podstrana in the church of Saint Martin. Lucius Castus was a soldier, centurion, dux legionum, and finally a prefect of the Roman navy. After the end of his military career, he was named Procurator of Liburnia, that is the governor of today's Dalmatia.
He truly saw the most of the old world, from Judea, Parthia, Budapest, Italy, and finally Britain, where his victories won him the status of a legend. His final resting place is here, in Podstrana.

Salona (Ancient Greek: Σάλωνα) was an ancient city and the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. The name Salona preserves the language of the early inhabitants of this area whom the Romans called Dalmatae, and considered to be part of a larger group called Illyrians.[1] Salona (or Salon) is situated in today's town of Solin, right next to Split, in modern-day Croatia.
First mention of the name Salon originates about 7th century BC as an Illyrian settlement near the spring of river Jadro. In the first millennium BC the Greeks set up an emporium (marketplace) there. After the conquest by the Romans, Salona became the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. because it sided with the future Roman emperor Gaius Julius Caesar in the civil war against Pompeii's and Marcus Licinius Crassus of the first Triumvirate. Martia Iulia Valeria Salona Felix (the full name of the ancient city) was founded probably after the Roman civil wars under Julius Caesar. The early Roman city encompassed the area around the Forum and Theatre, with an entrance, the Porta Caesarea, on the north-east side, The walls were fortified with towers during the reign of Augustus. The early trapezoidal shape of the city was transformed by eastern and western expansion of the city. The city quickly acquired Roman characteristics: walls; a forum; a theatre; an amphitheater – the most conspicuous above-ground remains today; public baths; and an aqueduct.[6] Many inscriptions in both Latin and Greek have been found both inside the walls and in the cemeteries outside, since Romans forbade burials inside the city boundaries. A number of fine marble sarcophagi from those cemeteries are now in the Archaeological Museum of Split. All this archaeological evidence attests to the city's prosperity and integration into the Roman Empire.
Aqueduct of Salona
Salona had a mint that was connected with the mint in Sirmium and silver mines in the Dinaric Alps through Via Argentaria. When the Roman Emperor Diocletian retired, he erected a monumental palace nearby. This massive structure, known as Diocletian's Palace, became the core of the modern city of Split.
Salona's continuing prosperity resulted in extensive church building in the fourth and fifth centuries, including an episcopal basilica and a neighboring church and baptistery inside the walls, and several shrines honoring martyrs outside. These have made it a major site for studying the development of Christian sacred architecture.
Salona was largely destroyed in the invasions of the Avars and Slavs in the seventh century AD, though the exact year of the destruction still remains an open subject between archaeologists. Refugees from Salona settled inside the Diocletian's Palace.

Split - Dioklecjan's Palace
Pałac Dioklecjana w Spalatum (w Splicie) to rezydencja zbudowana przez cesarza Dioklecjana na przełomie III i IV wieku jako willa, w której miał zamiar osiąść po zamierzonej na 305 r. abdykacji. Budowla została zaplanowana na wzór castrum romanum (warownego obozu rzymskiego), na prostokącie o wymiarach 214,0 x 175,0 m. Zabudowania przecinały dwie wewnętrzne ulice (cardo – podłużna i decumanus – poprzeczna) wzdłuż których ustawiono szeregi kolumn. Na ich przecięciu znajdował się wewnętrzny dziedziniec.
Ulica poprzeczna rozdzielała część przeznaczoną na pomieszczenia gwardii cesarskiej od części reprezentacyjnej. Każda z ulic kończyła się bramą w murach: od strony zachodniej – Brama Żelazna (Porta Ferrea), północnej – Brama Złota (Porta Aurea), wschodniej – Brama Srebrna (Porta Argentea), południowej – Brama Brązowa (Porta Aenea). Rezydencja od południa przylegała do brzegu morza i od tej strony bok założenia pałacowego stanowił kolumnowy portyk umożliwiający długie spacery wzdłuż nadbrzeża. Pozostałe boki pałacu były ufortyfikowane basztami wzniesionymi na narożach, przy bramach i w środkowych częściach muru, pomiędzy bramami. Do pałacu, od strony portyku prowadziło wejście przez centralnie usytuowany westybul. Po jego obu stronach znajdowały się pomieszczenia mieszkalne. Za westybulem znajdował się perystyl zbudowany na planie koła, przekryty kopułą. W głębi, po stronie lewej od wejścia Dioklecjan nakazał wznieść świątynię Jowisza. Naprzeciw niej znajdowało się wzniesione jeszcze za życia cesarza mauzoleum. Była to budowla na planie ośmioboku, otoczona kolumnadą. Do wnętrza mauzoleum prowadził portyk od strony ulicy przecinającej założenie w kierunku podłużnym.
W roku 1979 pałac wraz z zabytkowym centrum Splitu został wpisany na listę światowego dziedzictwa kulturalnego UNESCO.
Diocletian's Palace (Croatian: Dioklecijanova palača, pronounced [diɔklɛt͡sijǎːnɔʋa pǎlat͡ʃa]) is an ancient palace built by the Roman emperor Diocletian at the turn of the fourth century AD, that today forms the center of the city of Split. While it is referred to as a palace because of its intended use as the retirement residence of Diocletian, the term can be misleading as the structure is massive and more resembles a large fortress: about half of it was for Diocletian's personal use, and the rest housed the military garrison.
Diocletian built the massive palace in preparation for his retirement on 1 May 305 AD. It lies in a bay on the south side of a short peninsula running out from the Dalmatian coast, four miles from Salona, the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. The terrain slopes gently seaward and is typical karst, consisting of low limestone ridges running east to west with marl in the clefts between them.
