Welcome to birthplace of democracy! Greece is one of the oldest and most influential civilizations in the world. I have visited three times and covered many destinations, From the mainland, to the islands. I've also sampled an array of foods, from seafood to hardy meats, wines and delicious cheeses. Here is my list of top 10 places to visit in Greece, a country unlike any other on earth.
1. Athens - Let's start with Athens, the capital of Greece and one of the oldest cities in the world.
2. Delphi - A two and a half hour drive from Athens brings you to what the ancient world considered both the spiritual and physical center of the universe.
3. Epidavros - A two-hour drive from Athens to eastern Peloponnese brings us to #3 on my list and one of the ancient world's most amazing civic structures: The Theatre of Epidavros.
4. Sounion - Number 4 on my list is the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion.
5. Rhodes Island - Rhodes is one of the largest of all the Greek islands.
6. Symi Island - An hour by ferryboat will bring you to the tiny but beautiful island of Symi.
7. Kos Island - Kos is home to the Asklepion, one of the world’s first healing centers, as well as the ancient tree under which Hippocrates taught his pupils.
8. Kalymnos Island - Traditionally known as the island of the sponge divers, Kalymians now enjoy living in one of Europe’s most illustrious rock climbing destinations.
9. Santorini Island - Its iconic blue and white houses and dramatic cliffs make it visually stunning at every turn.
10. Meteora - Meteora, which literally translates into ‘suspended in the air’ alluding to the medieval monasteries perched on top of rock pillars in this strange and beautiful landscape.

SYMI - GREECE
The island has become a haven for tourists from abroad, especially British and Italians, and is now the permanent home of about 120 non-Greek residents, some 50 of whom are British. The influx of tourists has led to the restoration of a great number of homes (many of which were destroyed during World War II); these restorations, by law, have to conform to guidelines laid down by the Greek culture ministry's Archaeological Service

The Greek island of Symi is a long way from the mainland and is actually closer to Turkey.
In fact, throughout its history, the island has been the center of conflict over its ownership.
It was first in the possession of the ancient Greeks, then became part of the Roman Empire, and then the Byzantine Empire.
In the Middle Ages, the Knights of Saint John took over the island before being defeated and expelled by the Ottomans.
Between World War One and World War Two, Symi was taken over by the Italians, occupied by the Nazis and then the British, before becoming Greek once more.
Though much of the city was destroyed during the two World Wars, the population rallied to rebuild this picturesque island into a stunning destination.
The landscape of Symi is predominately large hills, which afford spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea.

#7 - Corfu, an island off Greece’s northwest coast in the Ionian Sea, is defined by rugged mountains and a resort-studded shoreline. Its cultural heritage reflects years spent under Venetian, French and British rule before it was united with Greece in 1864.
#6 - Zakynthos is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea and a well-known summer resort. The harbor city of Zakynthos is the capital and major hub, centered around waterfront Solomos Square. Popular beaches like Agios Nikolaos, Alykanas and Tsilivi offer swimming and water sports. Accessed by boat, Navagio beach is the site of a famed 1980 shipwreck resting in a sandy cove framed by cliffs.
