Caserta is a city in southern Italy. It's known for the baroque Royal Palace of Caserta, with its fountain-filled gardens. North, the Monumental Complex Belvedere San Leucio was built as a model town, with a silk factory and workers’ houses. East, the imposing Carolino Aqueduct is an 18th-century structure. West, in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, are the ruins of the Anfiteatro Campano, which once hosted gladiator fights.
Caserta is the capital of the province of Caserta in the Campania region of Italy . It is an important agricultural, commercial and industrial municipality and city. Caserta is located on the edge of the Campanian on the foot of the Campanian Subapennine mountain range. The city is best known for the Palace of Caserta .
Modern Caserta was established around the defensive tower built in Lombard times by Pando , Prince of Capua . The tower is now part of the Palace of the Prefecture which was once the seat of the counts of Caserta, as well as a royal residence. The original population moved from Casertavecchia (former bishopric seat) to the current site in the 16th century. Casertavecchia was built on the Roman town of Casam Irtam (the name Caserta is a subsequent contraction of House (m) Irta (m) meaning home village located above). Giro d Italia Stage 7, May 13 2011
Bikes, bus rides, beer, BFF (it works with the alliteration), Benevento, bell towers, beautiful weather...how can you create a better weekend??
It started with a trek to Stage 7 of the Giro, the Italian equivalent of the Tour de France. We made our way to the small town of Mercogliano and rode the funicolare (cable car) up to the top of Montevirgine. We were packed into the cable car, where I think I met two new best friends on the ascent. My guess is the grade was about 45 degrees. At the top, we viewed the finish line, and then strolled a little way back down the hillside towards the 600 -- 800 meter mark to watch the riders come up the S curves. When the riders finished, they rode right past me on their way back down. I was close enough to pinch several tushes, but these boys have no meat on their bones, so I kept my hands to myself. How do they sit on those seats everyday???
A first for Randy, we were in such a hurry to get a good spot, figuring like the U.S. there would be plenty of vendors at the top of the hill, that we totally ignored the vendors selling Giro hats, jerseys, t-shirts, under your bike helmet head protectors, and whatever other doo-dad conceivable. His souvenir will have to be the pictures he took and the memory of the bus ride back down, because there was no room at the top for anything beyond the stage for the awards for the day. We got up to the top early enough to watch many riding enthusiasts test their metal against the hill, and then join the festive crowd waiting for the real cyclists. The most enthusiastic group seemed to be the bus drivers perched on the hill over my left shoulder. They cheered the spectators riding up for a better view. They cheered each other trying to hop over the barriers protecting the riders. They cheered the Carbonieri trying to clear those last few spectators that refused to get off the course, and then they cheered the riders. They also cheered each other as they stacked their empty wine bottles from their lunch before the event. Little did we know that soon we would be riding back down with them.
The trip back down felt like a scene out of War of the Worlds. You sort of drift with the crowd, hoping you are not going to end up in one of those cages on the end of the arm of the alien dangling 70 feet in the air. We headed back to the funicolare only to have the way blocked, and long lines, with no movement. The people in front of us were directed down the hill. We went along thinking we might even have to hike back down the hill. We set our limit at 5km, otherwise we would wait for the funicolare. Instead we ended up on the bus. Other than hoping the Italian metabolism had taken care of all the wine from the empty bottles I'd seen stacked up, the trip down was eyebrow-raising enough just seeing what the bike riders had recently scaled. It made us appreciate their accomplishment all the more. Switch backs that we had to crawl through, as we spent 45 minutes snaking our way back down the hill, compared to the 15 minute funicolare ride up.
It was a great day, setting the stage for a fantastic Saturday, touring around Benevento, 45 minutes outside Naples. We joined our friends on a tour planned for them with 20+ friends and associates.
