The largest city is Cherepovets, the home of the Severstal metallurgical plant, the largest industrial enterprise in the oblast. Vologda Oblast is rich in historic monuments, such as the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, Ferapontov Monastery with the frescoes of Dionisius, medieval towns of Velikiy Ustyug and Belozersk, and baroque churches of Totma and Ustyuzhna. Large reserves of wood and fresh water are the main natural resources.

The cabin of Peter the Great is a small wooden house which was the first St Petersburg palace of Tsar Peter the Great. The log cabin was constructed in three days in May 1703, by soldiers of the Semyonovskiy Regiment. At that time, the new St Petersburg was described as a heap of villages linked together, like some plantation in the West Indies. The date of its construction is now considered to mark the foundation of the city. The design is a combination of an izba, a traditional Russian countryside house typical of the 17th century, and the Tsar's beloved Dutch Baroque, later to evolve into the Petrine Baroque. The Museum of Diplomatic Corps is a private historical museum located in Russian city Vologda. It is situated in a wooden manor that belonged to a noble Pavel Puzan-Puzyrevsky where, in 1918, the American Embassy was quartered. The exposition of the museum is devoted to little known events which took place in Vologda in February–July 1918, and is connected with a stay of 11 foreign embassies and diplomatic missions headed by the American Ambassador David Rowland Francis. Museum was closed on 4 November 2012.

Sergiev Posad, Moscow Oblast, Russia tour

Sergiyev Posad (Russian: Сергиев Посад; IPA: [ˈsʲɛrgʲɪɪf pɐˈsat]) is a city and the administrative center of Sergiyevo-Posadsky District in Moscow Oblast, Russia.

Sergiyev Posad grew in the 15th century around one of the greatest of Russian monasteries, the Trinity Lavra established by St. Sergius of Radonezh, still one of the largest monasteries in Russia. Town status was granted to Sergiyev Posad in 1742. The town's name, alluding to St. Sergius, has strong religious connotations. Soviet authorities changed it first to just Sergiyev in 1919, and then to Zagorsk in 1930, in memory of the revolutionary Vladimir Mikhailovich Zagorsky.

The original name was restored in 1991.
