The West Region is a NUTS Level III statistical region of the Republic of Ireland. It consists of the territory of the city of Galway and the counties of Galway, Mayo and Roscommon. The West region spans 13,801 km² and has a population of 380,057 . Prior to 2014, the region was governed by the West Regional Assembly. Statutory instrument No. 573/2014 abolished that assembly. Since that date, the association between Regional Assemblies and NUTS regions has ceased.     Knocknarea is a large hill west of Sligo town in County Sligo, Ireland. The 327-metre high limestone hill is visually striking, as it is monolithic in appearance and stands in a prominent position on the Cúil Irra peninsula between the bays of Sligo and Ballysadare. At the summit is a large mound of loose stones. Although it has not been excavated, it is believed to conceal a Neolithic passage tomb.

    The Twelve Bens or Twelve Pins is a mountain range of sharp-peaked quartzite summits and ridges located in the Connemara National Park in County Galway, in the west of Ireland. Topographically, the range is partnered with the Maumturks range on the other side of the Glen Inagh valley . The highest point is Benbaun at 729 meters . The range is popular with hill walkers, rock climbers, and fell runners. The 15–kilometre Glencoaghan Horseshoe is noted as providing some of the most exhilarating mountaineering in Ireland, and a true classic. A more serious undertaking is the 28–kilometre Twelve Bens Challenge, climbing all bens in a single day.

    The Maumturks or Maamturks is a long broadly-straight mountain range, consisting of weathered quartzite peaks in its central section, located in Connemara in County Galway, in the west of Ireland. The range lies opposite the Twelve Bens, on the other side of the Inagh Valley . The walk of the full range , is considered one of the great classic ridge-walks of Ireland, and since 1975, the University College Galway Mountaineering Club, has run the annual Maamturks Challenge, a walk covering the entire 25–kilometre range in a single day. Near the centre of the range in a deep valley is Irish: Máméan, a site of pilgrimage dedicated to Saint Patrick.

  • 6. Croagh Patrick County Mayo
    Croagh Patrick , nicknamed the Reek, is a 764 metres mountain and an important site of pilgrimage in County Mayo, Ireland. It is 8 kilometres from Westport, above the villages of Murrisk and Lecanvey. It is the third highest mountain in County Mayo after Mweelrea and Nephin. It is climbed by pilgrims on Reek Sunday every year, which is the last Sunday in July. It forms the southern part of a U-shaped valley created by a glacier flowing into Clew Bay in the last Ice Age. Croagh Patrick is part of a longer east-west ridge; the westernmost peak is called Ben Gorm.
