Pearl Brewery -- Texas Transportation Co. No. 1, San Antonio, Texas
A short Super-8mm film clip that I took on September 3rd, 1980. With me were a good friend and Missouri Pacific Locomotive Engineer Joe Covert and his wife Diane. The action took place in the area around the Pearl Beer Brewery (San Antonio Brewing Association) and Southern Pacific Railroad's East Yard. The highlight was getting some footage of electric locomotive Texas Transportation Company No. 1, which was built by Baldwin and Westinghouse in December, 1917, as Monongahela-West Penn 2000. This railroad later became the City Lines of West Virginia in 1943 when the power operation and the traction operation were separated. After abandonment in 1947 the locomotive was then sold to the Kansas City Kaw Valley RR as their 504 in April, 1948. When the Kaw Valley was abandoned in 1953, the locomotive came to San Antonio and was renumbered 1.
The film opens with me filming Joe Covert, (who unfortunately, passed away July 12th, 2005) who protests that I am wasting film on him. Later you can see Joe's wife, Diane, waving me on to hurry on into the gates to continue filming No. 1 and crew switching.
In is interesting to note the operation of a submarine switch, and also the obvious safety violations such as using the footboard on the forward end of the locomotive to retrieve a red flag, crossing very close in front of equipment moving and a few other things that don't meet up to modern safe work practices. Apparently, they got the job done on a daily basis OK!!!

The ‘Hottest’ Wine Trail in Texas is Off Hwy 290!
Goodtaste.tv
There’s no way around it: the way we taste our Texas wines has changed. We’re now America’s No. 5 wine-producing state! If you haven’t heard the buzz on the Fredericksburg Wine Road 290 as of late, it’s time to hit the trail. This serene stretch of road along US Highway 290 near Fredericksburg, Texas is being compared to the Napa of 30 years ago–a higher level of development, growth and quality. Up for an adventure (and some best wine in the state)? This is where it’s happening! The thirteen Texas wineries found along this route specialize in home-grown hospitality, with newcomers to the neighborhood like Messina Hof adding to 290’s already esteemed reputation with 3 Top of Class Winners at the 2014 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. We’re getting ahead of ourselves, however. The first stop on our Goodtaste tour of 290 landed us at 4.0 Cellars.
4.0’s impressive facility is a good starting point. They’re tasting room is a lively spot with plenty of foot traffic. Here you’ll taste award-winning Texas wines from three different producers: Brennan Vineyards, Lost Oak Winery, and McPherson Cellars. Talk about saving some time on travel (and gas!). They also do a fun ‘Texas Cheese & Wine Experience’ – Texas cheeses from Veldhuizen Cheese Company paired with five wines selected from 4.0 Cellars.
Up the road, maybe 200 yards, is the aforementioned Messina Hof Winery & Resort. One of the pioneers of Texas wines, standouts include their Cabernet Franc Private Reserve as well as their crisp, clear and pleasantly sweet Angel Riesling.
Just across the highway – and a place that’s always intrigued me – is Dan Gatlin’s Inwood Estates Vineyard. Dan is a bit of a renegade and works extremely hard to elevate the status of Texas wines. A MUST, according to Dan, is that a wine needs to say ‘Texas’ on the font label or it is not a true Texas wine. Inwood is known for its Tempranillo, but also doing some really great work with Cabernet — which has immense potential largely untapped in Texas.
We made fast friends with Inwood’s on-site bistro. Be sure to stick around for something to munch on…
Exploring San Antonio: The Pearl District & The River Walk
On this Airstream Life vLog, Steve gets very excited that we finally have a beautiful sunny warm day! It's been a lot of cold and rain since we got to Texas. We enjoy the day by first heading to the Pearl District. This is a revitalized area with all sorts of stores and restaurants. We walk around, check out the brews at the Southerleigh Brewery and then walk through the lobby at the Hotel Emma which was gorgeous! Our new friends Four Life Adventures recommended we check it out and we are so glad we did! Finally, we end our time in the Pearl district with some amazing bbq at the Granary. Make sure to go on Tuesday to get their Pastrami Rib. It was to die for. Steve coined the hashtag #sensuallydelectable on Instagram!
Later that afternoon we head downtown to do the River Walk. We start with margaritas at the oldest establishment on the River, Casa Rio. After enjoying the atmosphere and watching the boats go by we walked the river walk for a while before heading into The Esquire. The Esquire is the oldest bar in the area and has happy hour until 7pm. We wnjoyed a delicious cocktail and some finger foods before heading back out to see the lantern boats on the river. An amazing night!
We head to a different kind of Harvest Host right in San Antonio in the next video, so stay tuned!

SAN ANTONIO NIGHTLIFE - PEARL DISTRICT - 2019 vlog
wondering what San Antonio is like at night? In this vlog, we are in San Antonio's Pearl District, the historic culinary and cultural center filled with dining, entertainment, shopping and more.
First stop is the American farm-to-table bistro, Supper. The menu pays homage to the traditional Texan multi cultural history, including Southern, American, German, and Mexican. We try the highlight of the drink menu, the Three Emmas, named after the brewery's former owner Emma Koehler. The cocktail is sweet and sour, which is an ode to the scandalous love story that makes the heritage of the Hotel Emma.
Next we check out the Hotel Emma, which is a former brewery. It has a creative industrial design. This is the place to be to enjoy San Antonio nightlife and food.
