Let's Bike SR 520 Trail - Seattle to Velodrome
For my first big video of 2018, I decided to ride the entire SR 520 Trail from its western end in Seattle all the way to Redmond and the velodrome in Marymoor Park. I want to show how convenient it is to get from one end to the other.
The SR 520 Trail runs 11.1 miles alongside State Road 520 from the Seattle end of the Evergreen Point floating bridge to the Sammamish River Trail in Redmond. It is a paved trail that is street-free except for a 1.3 mile bike lane section in Bellevue and has rolling hills. Of course, at the end is Marymoor Park which features the Jerry Baker Memorial Velodrome, a cycling racetrack with banked curves that just has to be seen (and ridden, as you will see in my pathetic attempt).
The trail provides direct access between the cities of Seattle, Bellevue, and Redmond. Bike routes and trails that connect or run close to the SR 520 Trail include: Lake Washington Loop, Burke-Gilman Trail, Cross Kirkland Corridor, Bridle Crest Trail, Sammamish River Trail, Redmond Central Connector, Marymoor Connector, West Lake Sammamish Trail/Parkway Bike Route, East Lake Sammamish Trail, and Bear Creek Trail.
The SR 520 Trail also runs through the heart of Microsoft's headquarters and past the campus for Nintendo of America (I've always been a Nintendo fan).
Overlays and animations were created by me using Adobe Flash, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Final video was created in iMovie.
3D map flyover was created using Google Earth Pro.
All pictures were taken by me with my iPhone 6S on January 1, 2018.
All videos were taken by me with my iPhone 6S, ContourROAM3, and ContourROAM2 on January 1, 2018.
Footage is shown at normal and mostly 300% speeds.
Music played:
Get to Know by Joshua Iz from the album San Francisco Sessions, Vol. 6 (Unmixed) by Mark Farina
During the velodrome section: Mario Raceway from the Mario Kart 64 OST by Kenta Nagata at Nintendo
Ravenna Seattle Washington Real Estate
Ravenna Seattle Washington Real Estate
Ravenna
From west to east, this segment of Seattle's north end ranges from modest bungalows and university faculty homes in Ravenna to the nicer neighborhoods of Laurelhurst and Windermere, where mini-mansions command impressive views of Lake Washington and the Cascades. The residents worry about traffic generated by nearby institutions or threatened by widening of the state Route 520 bridge across the lake. Before the arrival of settlers from the United States, the principal geographic feature of the area now called Ravenna was a creek draining the waters of Green Lake into Union Bay.
Ravenna is a neighborhood in northeastern Seattle, Washington, named after Ravenna, Italy. The neighborhood is mostly residential, with several businesses located along the busiest streets, in addition to University Village Shopping Center. Many of the residents are graduate students at the University of Washington, which is about a mile or two to the south. Its main distinction is the restored Cowen Park-Ravenna Park, which is near the popular walking or biking route between Green Lake and the Burke-Gilman Trail near University Village.

Chief Sealth Trail - Seattle, WA
The Chief Sealth Trail in Seattle, WA
Length: ~4 miles
Connects: Rainier Beach to Beacon Hill, all in Seattle. If you want burning thighs this is bike trail for you. It must be the hilliest bike trail in the city.
Access from Downtown Seattle to the southern trail head: Link to Rainier Beach. It won't take you as close to the trail head as taking 106 or 7, but it's a nicer ride.
Access from Downtown Seattle to the northern trail head: Ride your bike to Beacon Hill.

Interurban North Trail - King County, WA
The Interurban North Trail bicycling and walking trail in King County, WA.
Length: ~32 miles
Connects: Seattle to Everett via Shorline, Lynnwood, Martha Lake, Mountlake Terrace, and Edmonds.
Despite it not being an off-street path through most of Seattle, I started in the city core because Denny and Dexter is the first sign for the trail that I know of.
Follow the signs north for 32 miles to Everett Station, where you can hop on Sound Transit 512 back to downtown Seattle.
On a personal note, this is one of my least favorite King County trails. It's poorly marked for much of the length, has places that spit you out in a narrow bike lane on wide roads and sometimes on to sidewalks, and most of the scenery and surroundings are either soul-crushing suburbia or I-5.
Cycling the Seattle Elliott Bay Trail With Map
There are several ways from North Seattle to access the Elliot Bay Trail. This time I took the Locks, but you do have to walk your bike. I also returned to Ballard via Magnolia and climbing up to Magnolia Park.

Seattle: Gas Works Park
Gas Works Park, in Seattle, Washington, is a 19.1-acre (77,000 m2) public park on the site of the former Seattle Gas Light Company gasification plant, located on the north shore of Lake Union at the south end of the Wallingford neighborhood. The park was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 2, 2013, more than a decade after being nominated.
Gas Works park contains remnants of the sole remaining coal gasification plant in the United States. The plant operated from 1906 to 1956 and was bought by the City of Seattle for park purposes in 1962. The park opened to the public in 1975. The park was designed by Seattle landscape architect Richard Haag, who won the American Society of Landscape Architects Presidents Award of Design Excellence for the project. The plant's conversion into a park was completed by Daviscourt Construction Company of Seattle.
It was originally named Myrtle Edwards Park, after the city councilwoman who had spearheaded the drive to acquire the site and who died in a car crash in 1969. In 1972, the Edwards family requested that her name be taken off the park because the design called for the retention of much of the plant. In 1976, Elliott Bay Park, just north of Seattle's Belltown neighborhood, was renamed Myrtle Edwards Park.
Gas Works Park incorporates numerous pieces of the old plant. Some stand as ruins, while others have been reconditioned, painted, and incorporated into a children's play barn structure, constructed in part from what was the plant's exhauster-compressor building. A web site affiliated with the Seattle Times newspaper says, Gas Works Park is easily the strangest park in Seattle and may rank among the strangest in the world.
Gas Works Park also features an artificial kite-flying hill with an elaborately sculptured sundial built into its summit. The park was for many years the exclusive site of a summer series of Peace Concerts. These concerts are now shared out among several Seattle parks. The park also has for many years hosted one of Seattle's two major Fourth of July fireworks events; in 2009, it was the sole such event. The park is the traditional end point of the Solstice Cyclists and the start point for Seattle's World Naked Bike Ride.
The park originally constituted one end of the Burke-Gilman bicycle and foot trail, laid out along the abandoned right-of-way of the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway. However, the trail has now been extended several kilometers northwest, past the Fremont neighborhood toward Ballard.
