Hell's Half Acre Lava Field - Idaho Falls ID
A large, relatively recent lava flow sits a few miles outside my hometown of Idaho Falls, Idaho. It was the source of a lot of adventure during my youth. This is some crazy terrain, with huge cracks, sinkholes, crevices, and lots of juniper and sagebrush. NASA practiced for the original moon landings at a similar lava flow in nearby Craters of the Moon National Monument. The flowing lava formed countless lava tube caves as it crept along; some small, and some big enough for a game of football. 17 Mile Cave, one of the most accessible big caves, lies on the northeastern fringe of Hell's Half Acre. The lava here is buried by a few feet of topsoil, but the mouth of the cave is open and invites exploration. (Its name comes from the distance from town, but the town grew and it's now more like 13 miles out. While it's nowhere near 17 miles long, the cave's ballroom is big enough for football and bottle rockets. Marked by the Elephant Hunters historical marker on the Arco Highway west of IF.) I spent a lot of time here in high school...

Hell's Half Acre-Two Sites, Two States, Wyoming & Idaho - S1.E170
Have you ever come across a place named “Hell’s Half Acre” while traveling. Now imagine discovering two sites known as “Hell’s Half Acre” within one week - in two different states.
We actually had that experience recently while traveling through Wyoming and Idaho. In this video we share a few views of the Wyoming Hell’s Half Acre and bring you along for a hike around the Idaho Hell’s Half Acre.
Hell's Half Acre in Idaho is located along I-15 behind a roadside rest area. This site was formed as a result of a lava flow that actually forced the Snake River to be rerouted in the distant past. The lava flow is believed to have erupted about 4,100 years ago and covers 222 square miles.
Hell's Half Acre in Wyoming is located along Highway 20/26 approximately 40 miles west of Casper. The 960-acre site is described as a geologic oddity, and features eroded earth, rocks, caves, and deep ravines. The site is now known as Hell's Half Acre, but in the past was known by several other names, including The Baby Grand Canyon, The Pits of Hades, and The Devil's Kitchen. The site is known to have been a Native American hunting ground that was used for buffalo hunts.
A special note from Debra: The sign in WY is misleading. It reads, the Indians drove great herds of buffalo into this depression for slaughter. The indigenous never slaughtered buffalo. Every part of every buffalo hunted was utilized and never wasted - hides for the teepees and rugs, meat for food, horns for medicine and even cooking, etc. The indigenous also honored every animal slain with rituals of gratitude. It is the white man that slaughtered the buffalo, almost to extinction. “In the mid-19th century, it was estimated that 30 million to 60 million buffalo roamed the plains.” In an effort to extinguish Native Indians, the indigenous, “Hunters began killing buffalo by the hundreds of thousands in the winter months. By the end of the 19th century, only 300 buffalo were left in the wild.”

Driving from Pocatello, ID to Idaho Falls on Interstate 15
I-15 continues north onto the Snake River Plain and into the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. The highway accesses the reservation's main settlement, Fort Hall, via a diamond interchange with Ross Fork Road on the Bannock–Bingham county line. I-15 has a four-ramp partial cloverleaf interchange with US 91, at which the highway crosses over Union Pacific's Montana Subdivision rail line, near the northern edge of the reservation; I-15 Bus. splits northeast with US 91 from this interchange. The Interstate curves northeast and crosses the Blackfoot River and begins to parallel the Snake River as it passes along the western edge of the city of Blackfoot. I-15 Bus. reconnects with I-15 at a diamond interchange with US 26 (Bridge Street), which runs concurrently with the Interstate leaving Blackfoot. The highway crosses the Snake River at the northern edge of the city. I-15 has a partial cloverleaf interchange near Rose before it crosses a pair of irrigation canals. The Interstate then travels across the eastern part of the Hell's Half Acre Lava Field ahead of its interchange with River Road, which provides access to Shelley east of the Snake River.
I-15 enters Bonneville County at its interchange with West 65th Street South near Woodville, which is simply given the destination of Exit 113 northbound. US 26 and I-15 Bus. split off onto Sunnyside Road shortly before I-15 enters Idaho Falls. The Interstate has a five-ramp partial cloverleaf interchange with US 20 (Broadway Street), from which US 20 Bus. splits east concurrent with I-15 Bus., which returns to the mainline Interstate. I-15 and US 20 run concurrently to a four-ramp partial cloverleaf interchange where US 20 heads northeast as a freeway toward Rigby, Rexburg, and Yellowstone National Park.
