Menger Hotel Room (San Antonio)
The Menger Hotel in San Antonio, TX was built in 1858 and it shows in the rooms. The lobby and large rooms downstairs are quite grand, but I'm always disappointed when I get a room here.
The Menger Hotel - close to the Alamo
From Mike Trigg Films: The Menger Hotel in San Antonio, Texas is more than a hotel. It's a museum. Generations of families from all over the world have made the Menger Hotel their home when they travel to San Antonio. It has alway been and will always be their home away from home, their hotel of choice. Staff at this hotel are like no other. They are very proud caretakers of this magnificent hotel that opened before the Civil War. Yes that is correct. It opened before the Civil War. And another bonus, the hotel sits right next to that most famous of Texas shrines, The Alamo. Art work abounds in these hallways. The iconic oil painting that hung above Rock Hudson's head in so many scenes in the blockbuster classic Giant, now hangs in the lobby. Teddy Roosevelt recruited many of his famous Rough Riders in the hotel bar. This hotel has housed as guests 13 U.S presidents, as well as diplomats, aristocrats, and royalty. President Bill Clinton made their Mango Ice Cream world famous when he discovered it on one visit. Service and food are outstanding. The Menger Hotel is considered the Grand Dame of the hospitality industry in San Antonio and west of the Mississippi. Also we must not forget that the Menger Hotel is haunted. Hotel officials will be happy to share some of those stories with you and there are many of them posted online. Enjoy your stay!

Find out about our new book at
The Menger Bar at the historic Menger Hotel in San Antonio, TX is awash in Texas and US history.
Built as part of the hotel in 1859 the Menger Bar immediately became a popular area watering hole for cowboys and business people, not to mention area travelers and residents. It was remodeled in the 1870s to match the bar at the House of Lords in London, England. And they couldn't have done a better job.
This small bar glistens with the shine of mahogany and oak paneling, and you can just imagine the secrets it holds after 160 years of quenching thirsts.
It's also been a popular stop-over by celebrities throughout the years. Jesse James, Oscar Wilde, dozens of politicians and famous characters from our history--all have sat at the bar at one time or another.
It's most famous as a recruiting station for Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders, when Teddy himself got fellow drinkers to join his volunteer regiment. Not to be missed in San Antonio!

This was one of the first fully automatic elevators added here. While the elevators with lexan were manual, this was installed as a fully automatic. It runs well and has no real issues. Sadly however, I found in a tripadvisor review where the manager said they were going to do some elevator work and current reviews state how some are not in service. I'm not sure if its a coincidence or if they are modding. Rumor has it that there is a manual elevator here too, but it has not been found.
