Drive the Shafer Trail -Canyonlands Island in the Sky to Moab-
In this segment of the Mighty Five Travel Guide I take you on a drive of the Shafer Trail from Canyonlands to Moab. It's great, I've done it 3 times! This version includes video of my most recent trip. The road is much smoother than it used to be. Passenger cars can likely survive it, if its not raining but check with a Ranger first!
Shafer Offroad Trail - Canyonlands National Park near Moab Utah
Easy and iconic, the Shafer 4wd Trail is a must do when visiting Moab or the Canyonlands in Utah. The road was originally a cattle trail built by John Sog Shafer in 1917. Later in the 1940s and 1950s, it was constructed into a useable road for trucks hauling uranium ore from the benches below. Long gone are the remnants of the old mining days but the incredible and imposing rim walls still stand to remind you of just how grand planet Earth really is.

The road is winding, in most places only wide enough for one vehicle, on one side bordered by cliffs and on the other side by an almost straight drop.. Any four-wheel drive vehicle should be able to navigate this well maintained road.
Along the way you get to see some amazing views.
Shafer Trail Part 2 - Canyonlands National Park - MOAB UTAH OFFROAD
See the first video here:
This is the Shafer Trail. It starts at the bottom of the Shafer Switchbacks in Canyonlands National Park near Moab, Utah. The trail exits the park onto BLM land and land owned by a potash processing plant. The trail goes past Thelma and Louise Point, which is where the scene was filmed for the movie Thelma and Louise where the two drive their car off a cliff into the Grand Canyon. The trail then goes past the colorful potash ponds that can be seen from Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park 1,000' above and several miles away. Finally the trail returns to pavement at the very end of Potash Road just outside Moab, Utah. This is an easy trail for a high clearance vehicle and the scenery is stunning. I hope you enjoy.

Shafer Trail in Canyonlands National Park, Moab, Utah
This is a 4-wheel drive, single lane dirt and rock road that drops down about 2000 feet from the top of Island in the Sky at Canyonlands National Park. It was on my bucket list so we had to do it. But, be advised if you ever decide to do it there is no turning back.
4K - Shafer Trail/Potash Road Full Drive | Canyonlands National Park, UTAH
Our drive through Canyonlands Shafer Trail/Potash Road on 7/8/18. We were able to successfully navigate the trail in a 2014 Ford Escape Titanium 1.6 FWD. Footage was shot on a GoPro 6 Black in 4k30FPS. Some sections of the video will have hard edits in them, the GoPro overheated several times during the trip(it was about 105 that day). The video cuts off about 2-5 miles past the end of Potash Rd(camera ran out of memory).
