Lewis Mountain Campground and Peak - Shenandoah National Park - Appalachian Trail Virginia
This was an easy hike to pick up some fragments of the AT between Bearfence Hut and Pocosin Cabin. I've now hiked a continuous path on the AT from the Mason Dixon Line at the Pennsylvania border to the HighTop Hut in the middle of Shenandoah National Park....twice because I hike as in-and-outs. That makes 321 miles. :)

My new trail name is now Alpha Gal!
I’d like to make a public service announcement to bring awareness to the tick borne illness called “Alpha Gal”.
This is a pretty serious allergy caused by the bite of the Lone Star Tick. Sometimes called Mammalian Meat Allergy (MMA), it has no cure.
This tick is present across the South and has spread to the Northeast. It is present in Shenandoah National Park and I was bitten by one (I removed it) and was later diagnosed with the allergy. In a nutshell, you become seriously allergic to red meat and dairy (anything that came from something with hair)! Beware of ticks, especially the white spotted ones, I never thought it would happen to me!

6.5 mile moderately HARD hike. Started from the Berry Hollow Parking lot in SNP and took the Berry Hollow Trail Fire Road to the Weakley Hollow Trail then connected to the Saddle Trail to the summit-1,752 ft in elevation gain. Lots of enormous boulders to see and climb.

Hike to High Knob Firetower on Shenandoah Mountain,Wv/Va 8-12-16
This 2 mile out and back hike starts in the George Washington National Forest, on Shenandoah Mountain, in Pendelton County, West Virginia, and ends at a cool lookout tower in Rockingham County, Virginia. Parking, and the trailhead, is located in West Virginia, on National Route 33 just near the Virginia/West Virginia state line. The hike is moderate, and in retrospect I would rate it 3.5 out of 5 Billygoats, although my girlfriend gives it a solid 4. For a longer, much more strenuous hike, one can start at the Brandywine Recreation Area, in West Virginia, and climb all the way up Shenandoah Mountain to reach the tower. Also, there are many other trails to explore in the general vicinity. This was our first trip to the George Washington National Forest and it did not disappoint. We plan on visiting again in the near future. Thanks for watching!

Shenandoah National Park, Luray, Virginia, USA - Hawksbill Summit Hike - Winter
Hawksbill Mountain is a mountain with an elevation of 4,050 feet (1,230 m). Marking the border between Madison County and Page County in Virginia, the summit of Hawksbill Mountain is the highest point in Shenandoah National Park, as well as the highest point in both Madison and Page counties.
The north face of Hawksbill Peak is a 2,500-foot (760 m) drop into Timber Hollow, which is the largest elevation change in the park. The summit is one of the few places in Shenandoah National Park where one can find balsam fir, a tree more typical of northern New England and southeast Canada. Red spruce was once found near the summit but the last of the trees died out over 20 years ago.
The National Park Service has constructed a stone observation platform at the summit. Byrd's Nest No. 2, one of a series of shelters built in the park by Senator Harry Byrd, is nearby. Hawskbill peak is also the site of a peregrine falcon restoration project. The summit of Hawksbill Mountain can be reached by a short hike from a trailhead located at the Upper Hawksbill parking area, just off of Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. A number of other hiking trails lead to the summit of Hawksbill, while the Appalachian Trail goes around and about 500 ft (150 m) in elevation below the summit. (Wikipedia)

Autumn in Shenandoah Valley
Shenandoah National Park encompasses part of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the U.S. state of Virginia. This national park is long and narrow, with the broad Shenandoah River and Valley on the west side, and the rolling hills of the Virginia Piedmont on the east. The scenic Skyline Drive is one of the most prominent features of the park. Almost 40% of the land area 79,579 acres has been designated as wilderness and is protected as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. The highest peak is Hawksbill Mountain at 4,051 feet (1,235 m). -- Wikipedia

Old Rag Mountain, Shenandoah National Park, VA - Backpacking
April 26, 2016 - Boys had a day off from school, so off to play in the mountains and take on a classic east-coast rock scramble in Shenandoah National Park on a weekday (i.e. no/less crowding!). I think they're up to it...
Up the Ridge Trail (via rock scramble), down Saddle Trail, then Weakley Hollow Fire Road around the base to finish.
GPS track here:
Sunny and hot at the bottom, windy and cool on top, with a brief rain shower on the summit while cooking lunch. 9.4 miles, and everybody did great!
Great summary of the route can be found here:

Tom Floyd Wayside Shelter - Appalachian Trail VA 601 to Shenandoah National Park Kiosk
Continued my SOBO journey today (10 Feb 2017) and decided to try and visit the north end of Shenandoah National Park and park at Compton Gap. Trouble was, today that section of Blue Ridge Parkway was closed due to ice. Instead, I parked at the tiny parking area at VA601. VA601 is a little one lane gravel road that has a trail head called Harmony Hollow. There is a short uphill blue blaze to the Appalachian Trail. Once on the AT, it was a short hike to the Tom Floyd Wayside Shelter. There is a spring nearby and several tent sites. The shelter itself is a little small, sleeping maybe 6. Ginger Spring is a drippy puddle with a sandy bottom. I’ve seen worse, but this one is reported to be unreliable. It was flowing today. After visiting the shelter I continued south to Possums Rest Overlook and then the Shenandoah National Park boundary kiosk. There were plenty of Backcountry Camping permits in the metal bin.
