Florida Travel: Tallahassee's Juke Joint: Bradfordville Blues Club
On a deeply rutted road in the North Florida woods, the moon shines through a tangled crochet of oaks dripping with Spanish moss. You might think you've stepped back in time.
Tallahassee is only minutes away, but here's the sensation its urban pulse is far behind. Here, you feel you might have entered an era when speakeasies, juke joints and honky-tonks could be found along the out-of-the-way rural roads of South Georgia and Florida's northern line.
Then, in a kind of time travel, you bump off Sam's Lane and onto Moses' Lane. You're not far now. The Bradfordville Blues Club – a pulsing, literally throbbing holdover from the days when bluesmen traveled the chitlin' circuit – is just through the trees.
NOTE: Due to storm damage to the building, The Bradfordville Blues Club is closed until further notice.
Where Music Was Made: Bradfordville Blues Club
Deep in the woods outside Tallahassee, Florida, the Bradfordville Blues Club keeps the blues alive - just as it's done for decades. Just follow the dirt road and get ready to boogie, 'cause this joint is jumping!

THE BRADFORDVILLE BLUES CLUB
Is located in an old, one-room concrete block building, tucked away between huge live oak trees at the end of a long dirt road, 8 miles north of Tallahassee, and 8 miles south of the Florida-Georgia state line.
Local lore has it that such greats as BB King, Fats Domino, Ray Charles, and Chuck Berry have visited the precursor of the Bradfordville Blues Club.
According to a sign, erected by the State of Mississippi Blues Commission at the club, this location was part of the “chitlin circuit,” the performance venues where black musicians could play during the era of racial segregation. Chitlin (or chitterlings) is a dish made out of the intestines of a hog. Although nowadays chitterlings are part of the soul food tradition, the origins have to do with the fact that slave owners would give the cheapest parts of the animals they butchered to their slaves (intestines, neck bones, feet, ears, snouts, etc.).
The BBC building dates from 1964, when it was used as a community center, and after-hours spot when the bars in Tallahassee closed. In the late 1980s, the center closed, and was reopened in 1992 by Dave Claytor, as Dave’s CC, named after the CC Saints, a local black baseball team.
The club wasn’t doing too well when the current proprietors, blues-loving Tallahassee attorney Gary Anton, and his wife Kim, took it over in 2002. They managed to transform the little club into one of the best-kept musical secrets, but also one of the most beloved, and eclectic venues for the blues in the state of Florida. Gary lines up the musicians, while Kim takes care of the ticket sales. Both are always present when the club is open, which is typically only on Friday and Saturday evening. You have to buy a ticket on line to get in, and the concerts are often sold out. The stage is set in a corner, leaving plenty of room to dance, and for the waitress to serve the ice-cold beer.
The only evening when we could visit the BBC they did not feature a blues artist, but Big Sandy and his Fly-Right Boys, a California-based band, consisting of Robert Williams (aka Big Sandy), guitar and vocals, Ashley Kingman, electric guitar, Kevin Stuart (upright bass), and J Brooke Emilio, drums. Big Sandy plays very upbeat music, with links to Western swing, country boogie, rockabilly, rock and roll, honky-tonk, Rhythm & Blues, and soul. He has been performing for over 25 years, has recorded 14 albums, performs all over the world, and has been inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
Big Sandy’s very upbeat music has quite a drive to it, and many visitors took to the dance floor, and really seemed to like the show. We had a great time, and will absolutely make sure to return when the BBC features a blues band.
NOTE: The blues song heard at the beginning of the video is Alright in Louisiana, by Lobo Loco, from the free music archive.

Ana Popovic Live at The Bradfordville Blues Club
A short clip of Anna Popavic playing in the United States at a very small Club in Tallahassee. Florida's Bradfordville Blues Club. I got a chance to meet and talk with Anna for a bit. She put on a wondefull show! I got to watch the whole show sitting only 10 feet in front of Anna. The club only had about 100 patrons on that night.

Juke Joint Blues ..... the original!
This is my family at a get together just having some fun. This was a complete on the spot improvisation of the Blues. Don't get me wrong, I would like to give my family some credit .... there is a little talent floating around. But this was a pretty good attempt at the blues. If nothing else, it sure will make you laugh!!
Sounds of Silence - The Mess at Floyd's Music Store
This is Sounds of Silence preforming their original song The Mess at Floyd's Music Store in Tallahassee Florida.
Sounds of Silence came to be back in the fall of 2002. They started out playing covers in the local bars and eventually took their act to Athens, GA. After a while they realized that people were more interested in hearing their original songs over the covers they were doing. They then started focusing on their own songs and became a strictly original band, playing the occasional cover for the unconverted S.O.S. fan in the crowd.
They won the Last Call Battle of the Bands in Athens, Ga two years in a row, beating out over 80 bands altogether. They eventually broke away from the Athens scene and began playing the entire southeastern United States. They went on to win the Kennesaw Battle of the Bands in 2006, and have participated in many other nationwide events including Emergenza, Bodog Battle of the Bands, Kenya RockFest, etc. They have shared the stage with many acclaimed national acts such as Puddle of Mudd, Finger Eleven, Saliva, Crossfade, and many other great national and indie bands.
Sounds of Silence mixes very personal and emotional lyrics with their eruptive and melodic music to create something that can only be described as Sounds of Silence. Past experiences, relationships, lost loved ones, and hope for something more are just a few of the topics of which they use to reach their listeners. They continue to thrive in the southeastern music scene, bringing a fresh breath of rock and roll air to a country where real rock music has been put on the back burner for some time now. If you're into melodic, in your face, rock and roll music then Sounds of Silence is what you've been looking for.
