STEM Day at the Capitol 2015
This event showcased how partnerships between business and science-oriented museums are filling the STEM pipeline and expanding STEM education.
Participating organizations were stationed inside and outside the Capitol building with interactive exhibits, simulators, robotics and more. State legislators learned first-hand how museums and science centers bring STEM to life through engaging hands-on experiences and engaged in discussions about the importance of STEM education as it relates to growing Florida’s technological workforce.
Demonstrations included a life-like medical patient simulator; a real-life, human-sized version of the video game “Angry Birds”; and 3-D printing.

Remote and Nomad Living in Tallahassee FLorida
Our fourth month of full time travel in January 2017 was not very exciting as we were focusing on work and preparing for our upcoming truck camping trip in February. We were excited however to have found some great second hand bikes and were exploring the area around Tallahassee by bicycle which was a lot of fun. We especially loved the biking trails around Lake Lafayette area as well as the beautiful Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail.

Clifton Curtis C.C. Williams, Jr. , , was an American naval aviator, test pilot, mechanical engineer, Major in the United States Marine Corps, and NASA astronaut, who was killed in a plane crash; he had never been to space. The crash was caused by a mechanical failure in a NASA T-38 jet trainer, which he was piloting to visit his parents in Mobile, Alabama. The failure caused the flight controls to stop responding, and although he activated the ejection seat, it did not save him. He was the fourth astronaut from NASA's Astronaut Group 3 to have died, the first two having been killed in separate T-38 flights and in the Apollo 1 fire earlier that year. The aircraft crashed in Florida near Tallahassee within an hour of departing Patrick AFB.
Although he was never on a spaceflight, he served as backup pilot for the mission Gemini 10, which took place in July 1966. Following this mission he was selected to be the Lunar Module Pilot for an Apollo mission to the Moon commanded by Pete Conrad. Following Williams' death, Alan Bean became Lunar Module Pilot for Conrad's mission, which ended up being Apollo 12, the second lunar landing.
Williams was born on September 26, 1932 in Mobile, Alabama, to parents Clifton Curtis Williams and Gertrude Williams. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America where he achieved its second highest rank, Life Scout. Williams attended Murphy High School in Mobile, from which he graduated in 1949. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Auburn University , Auburn, Alabama in 1954. Having joined the Navy ROTC while at AU, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps on August 9, 1954.

Tallahassee () is the capital city of the U.S. state of Florida. It is the county seat and only incorporated municipality in Leon County. Tallahassee became the capital of Florida, then the Florida Territory, in 1824. In 2017, the population was 191,049, making it the 7th-largest city in the U.S state of Florida, and the 126th-largest city in the United States. The population of the Tallahassee metropolitan area was 382,627 as of 2017. Tallahassee is the largest city in the Florida Panhandle region, and the main center for trade and agriculture in the Florida Big Bend and Southwest Georgia regions.
Tallahassee is home to Florida State University, ranked the nation's twenty-sixth best public university by U.S. News & World Report. It is also home to Florida A&M University, the fifth-largest historically black university by total enrollment. Tallahassee Community College is a large state college that serves mainly as a feeder school to Florida State and Florida A&M. Tallahassee qualifies as a significant college town, with a student population exceeding 70,000.As the capital, Tallahassee is the site of the Florida State Capitol, Supreme Court of Florida, Florida Governor's Mansion, and nearly 30 state agency headquarters. Aerospace Discovery at the Florida Air Museum is located at the Aerospace Center for Excellence on the SUN ‘n FUN Convention Campus
The Aerospace Center for Excellence (ACE) houses 7 buildings where STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs and activities are conducted at camps, special events and daily museum visits. SUN ‘n FUN’s Central Florida Aerospace Academy (CFAA) is the focal point at the entry and Aerospace Discovery at the Florida Air Museum offers annual memberships. Members are offered reciprocity at science centers around the United States and can enjoy unlimited admission to the museum. Scheduled symposiums are included as an annual membership benefit. In addition, the Buehler Restoration Skills Center hosts students from CFAA, Polk State College, Traviss Career Center and local institutions as they restore aircraft under the supervision of seasoned aircraft mechanics veterans and instructors. Special FAA workshops are hosted in the Buehler Center. Additional areas are used at special camping and scouting events such as Aerospace Discovery Weekend held in October. First flights are available for youth ages 7-18.
ACE is also the umbrella to SUN ‘n FUN’s scholarship program. More than $430,000 annually is made available for students to cover the cost of initial flight training and/or college tuition for students entering aviation career fields. In 2014, 28 bricks were laid for 16-19 year old students who soloed in a plane. 27 students received their first pilot’s license. More than 100 students have been enrolled into the scholarship programs.

Marco Antonio Rubio (born May 28, 1971) is an American attorney and politician currently serving as the senior United States Senator from Florida. A Republican, Rubio previously served as Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives. Rubio unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for President of the United States in 2016, winning presidential primaries in the State of Minnesota, the District of Columbia, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
Rubio is a Cuban American from Miami, Florida. After serving as a city commissioner for West Miami in the 1990s, he was elected to represent the 111th district in the Florida House of Representatives in 2000. Subsequently, he was elected Speaker of the Florida House, and was Speaker for two years beginning in November 2006. Upon leaving the Florida legislature in 2008 due to term limits, Rubio taught at Florida International University.
Rubio successfully ran for the United States Senate in 2010. In April 2015, Rubio announced that he would forego seeking re-election to the Senate to run for president. He suspended his campaign for president on March 15, 2016, after losing the Florida Republican primary to the eventual winner of the presidential election, Donald Trump. On June 22, 2016, Rubio reversed his decision not to seek re-election to the Senate; he went on to win a second term later that year.

For decades in the U.S., there have been isolated incidents of removal of Confederate monuments and memorials, although generally opposed in public opinion polls, and several U.S. States have passed laws over 115 years to hinder or prohibit further removals.
In the wake of the Charleston church shooting in June 2015, several municipalities in the United States removed monuments and memorials on public property dedicated to the Confederate States of America. The momentum accelerated in August 2017 after the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The removals were driven by the belief that the monuments glorify white supremacy and memorialize a treasonous government whose founding principle was the perpetuation and expansion of slavery. Many of those who object to the removals, like President Trump, believe that the artifacts are part of the cultural heritage of the United States.The vast majority of these Confederate monuments were built during the era of Jim Crow laws (1877–1954) and the Civil Rights Movement (1954–1968). Detractors claim that they were not built as memorials but as a means of intimidating African Americans and reaffirming white supremacy. The monuments have thus become highly politicized; according to Eleanor Harvey, a senior curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and a scholar of Civil War history: If white nationalists and neo-Nazis are now claiming this as part of their heritage, they have essentially co-opted those images and those statues beyond any capacity to neutralize them again.In some Southern states, state law restricts or prohibits altogether the removal or alteration of public Confederate monuments. According to Stan Deaton, senior historian at the Georgia Historical Society, These laws are the Old South imposing its moral and its political views on us forever more. This is what led to the Civil War, and it still divides us as a country. We have competing visions not only about the future but about the past.
