CEDAR CREST COUNTRY CLUB Locust Grove
What was once a weekend fishing camp for Tulsa oil baron, William G. Skelly, has become an enclave for its current occupants who like to live in the city during the week and retreat to the countryside for leisurely weekends and holidays. Skelly built Cedar Crest Country Club in the 1920s as a place for his fishing and hunting buddies.
Now a gated community nestled in the woods near Locust Grove, the Cedar Crest Country Club residents enjoy canoeing and fishing on Spring Creek, walking their dogs, sharing cocktails and gossip and savoring everyone’s favorite recipes at frequent pot luck suppers in friends’ cabins or at the Cedar Crest community center.
The cabins in the Cedar Crest fishing camp were rather modest and rustic during Skelly’s day. No doubt, he would be quite surprised at the elegant renovations that have taken place there in the past decade.
Many of the cabins have been totally renovated, with everything from new kitchens and baths to additions that offer grand views of the landscapes. A number of the cabins have been totally gutted and the new exteriors have an updated contemporary feeling.

Much of the style that the cabins now possess can be attributed to the bon vivant of Cedar Crest, internationally known interior designer Charles Faudree, who is renown for his classic Country French designs. He now is living in his third cabin at Cedar Crest.

His first cabin was named “The Roost” because the entry led to a second story loft. This cabin had close-knit seating and one of the signature pieces of furniture was a 19th-century Swedish secretaire that matched the cabin’s rustic spirit.
Faudree used a blue and white color scheme, with rich browns in some of the upholstery. A daybed in the living room was positioned so guests would have a perfect view of the meandering Spring Creek and the neighboring woods.
Open shelving in the kitchen was the perfect place for Faudree to display his collection of Staffordshire chickens and blue and white Chinese export porcelain, with origins in China, England and Spain.
In his second cabin, Faudree took part of a tiny front porch and turned it into an alcove, where his Spring Creek friends could work jigsaw puzzles, a favorite pastime among the Cedar Crest clan. He also painted the knotty pine paneling a soft off-white color. He mixed plaids and florals in the comfortable living room.
Faudree used open shelving again in this kitchen, because it is a hallmark of French kitchens. He especially likes open shelving in a country kitchen because it seems more informal and casual and complements the easy way he likes to entertain.
After a two-year hiatus from country life, when he was spending a lot of time in Spain on a castle for a client, Faudree returned to Cedar Crest and purchased “The Roost No. 3.” This cabin is featured in his fourth design book, “Charles Faudree Interiors,” which will be in book stores in October. The knotty pine interior was a great backdrop for the living room furnishings in shades of green, brown and beige, a departure from his usual blue and white and red toile palette.
Faudree writes, “Throughout the cabin, I show my great love for dogs and nature through the interplay of fabrics, textures and artwork — the kind of mix that I consider to be the signature of my design style. “
Of course, Nicholas and Ruby — named for Faudree’s late mother — have such exquisite taste that they love to nap next to the Aubusson pillows on the living room sofa.
Open shelving is again featured in the kitchen but a painted pine bookcase houses a collection of old and new white ironstone, which he has gathered over time. A rooster, turned into a lamp, another Faudree signature, nests on an old French garden table and a custom chair from Faudree’s furniture line, is another favorite place for Nicholas and Ruby to snuggle and nap.
Warm brown dresses the bedroom, accented with touches of leopard. Antique prints frame the bedroom’s fireplace.
The rock fireplace in the living room has a rustic, wooden mantel inscribed with this saying, “Good books, Good Wine, Good Friends,” a motto that Faudree loves to live by.
