There is also an original steam engine on the property that at one time powered a cotton gin.
The state of Texas and this area of the hill country is gaining a reputation for world-class wines and high-quality grapes, as well as widely renowned breweries, and numerous tourist destinations. CEDAR CREST COUNTRY CLUB Locust Grove
What was once a weekend fishing camp for Tulsa oil baron, William G. Skelly, has become an enclave for its current occupants who like to live in the city during the week and retreat to the countryside for leisurely weekends and holidays. Skelly built Cedar Crest Country Club in the 1920s as a place for his fishing and hunting buddies.
Now a gated community nestled in the woods near Locust Grove, the Cedar Crest Country Club residents enjoy canoeing and fishing on Spring Creek, walking their dogs, sharing cocktails and gossip and savoring everyone’s favorite recipes at frequent pot luck suppers in friends’ cabins or at the Cedar Crest community center.
The cabins in the Cedar Crest fishing camp were rather modest and rustic during Skelly’s day. No doubt, he would be quite surprised at the elegant renovations that have taken place there in the past decade.
Many of the cabins have been totally renovated, with everything from new kitchens and baths to additions that offer grand views of the landscapes. A number of the cabins have been totally gutted and the new exteriors have an updated contemporary feeling.

Much of the style that the cabins now possess can be attributed to the bon vivant of Cedar Crest, internationally known interior designer Charles Faudree, who is renown for his classic Country French designs. He now is living in his third cabin at Cedar Crest.

His first cabin was named “The Roost” because the entry led to a second story loft. This cabin had close-knit seating and one of the signature pieces of furniture was a 19th-century Swedish secretaire that matched the cabin’s rustic spirit.
Faudree used a blue and white color scheme, with rich browns in some of the upholstery. A daybed in the living room was positioned so guests would have a perfect view of the meandering Spring Creek and the neighboring woods.
Open shelving in the kitchen was the perfect place for Faudree to display his collection of Staffordshire chickens and blue and white Chinese export porcelain, with origins in China, England and Spain.
In his second cabin, Faudree took part of a tiny front porch and turned it into an alcove, where his Spring Creek friends could work jigsaw puzzles, a favorite pastime among the Cedar Crest clan. He also painted the knotty pine paneling a soft off-white color. He mixed plaids and florals in the comfortable living room.
Faudree used open shelving again in this kitchen, because it is a hallmark of French kitchens. He especially likes open shelving in a country kitchen because it seems more informal and casual and complements the easy way he likes to entertain.
After a two-year hiatus from country life, when he was spending a lot of time in Spain on a castle for a client, Faudree returned to Cedar Crest and purchased “The Roost No. 3.” This cabin is featured in his fourth design book, “Charles Faudree Interiors,” which will be in book stores in October. The knotty pine interior was a great backdrop for the living room furnishings in shades of green, brown and beige, a departure from his usual blue and white and red toile palette.
Faudree writes, “Throughout the cabin, I show my great love for dogs and nature through the interplay of fabrics, textures and artwork — the kind of mix that I consider to be the signature of my design style. “
Of course, Nicholas and Ruby — named for Faudree’s late mother — have such exquisite taste that they love to nap next to the Aubusson pillows on the living room sofa.
Open shelving is again featured in the kitchen but a painted pine bookcase houses a collection of old and new white ironstone, which he has gathered over time. A rooster, turned into a lamp, another Faudree signature, nests on an old French garden table and a custom chair from Faudree’s furniture line, is another favorite place for Nicholas and Ruby to snuggle and nap.
Warm brown dresses the bedroom, accented with touches of leopard. Antique prints frame the bedroom’s fireplace.
The rock fireplace in the living room has a rustic, wooden mantel inscribed with this saying, “Good books, Good Wine, Good Friends,” a motto that Faudree loves to live by.

Brandywine Island | Crittenden County AR | 2300
Property Listing:
Official Website:
Brandywine Island is powerful, breathtaking, overwhelming; much more an experience than a place. The rarest of the rare and quite possibly the finest jewel ever to be cut by Ol’ Man River. To be present here is to most assuredly be absent from all the rest of the world. An expansive, tranquil, pristine wilderness born—and even named—of a violent past, nurtured on ultra rich soils, and now exploding with all its abundant excess of timber and fish and game and…solitude. Mark Twain himself might find it hard to begin to capture Brandywine Island’s true essence: it simply must be experienced to be understood. As a professional forester and wildlife biologist, I have been privileged to visit many—and even manage a few—of the finest private recreational and wilderness properties in the eastern US over the last 30 years, but I have never seen anything to rival the massive size, raw productive power, and endless recreational and conservation opportunities of Brandywine Island. It is absolutely in a league of its own and is among the most special privately-owned wildlands in the world. Approximately 9,800 total acres, 3 miles wide, 7 miles long, 5 miles of river frontage, 17 miles of perimeter, 30 miles of roads, 200 acres of crops and food plots, 300 acres of lakes, and 9,000 acres of mature hardwood forests. Brandywine Island is simply monumental in size, and may, in fact, be the largest island on the entire Mississippi River under a single private ownership. With the 13,500-acre Tennessee Shelby Forest State Park directly across the river, large private ownerships in every direction, and the 5,400-acre Wapanocca National Wildlife Refuge nearby, Brandywine Island is well protected. Decades of professional, purposeful management have resulted in a vigorous and diverse forested habitat that sustains equally vibrant and robust wildlife populations. Oak, pecan, ash, cottonwood, willow, bass, bream, crappie, catfish, dove, rabbit, turkey, teal, mallards and world-class trophy whitetail bucks are just a wisp of the seemingly endless flora and fauna that adorn this rich paradise. Brandywine Island is almost its own entire ecosystem! And yet Brandywine Island is incredibly accessible for such a seemingly remote wilderness. Arrive by air via your own private airstrip right beside the lodge, or via Memphis International, an easy 1-hour drive. And with your own private causeway across Brandywine Chute, you can simply drive in from the mainland. But for the most enjoyable scenery, and a grand entrance with your guests, the short ride on a luxury cabin cruiser from the nearby Memphis Yacht Club and Marina will be hard to beat! And with the Memphis Grizzlies, Beale Street, Rendezvous BBQ and the rest of downtown Memphis only 45 minutes away by land or water, there is plenty to keep everyone fully entertained. This proximity to a metropolitan area, combined with its special conservation values, make Brandywine Island a prime candidate for a nature-preserving conservation easement if the owner so chooses. In turn, this unique and substantial tax-saving structure with significant existing improvements and timber value may provide a very accommodating financial scenario for the owner. Precious few properties anywhere offer the kind of recreational, conservation and economic opportunities of Brandywine Island. To step onto Brandywine Island is to step into a reality that is nearly non-existent in this day and age. The River isolating it, and its wildness seemingly frozen in time, Brandywine Island is an experience so unreal that it can almost feel like a dream. Ducks falling in through the towering timber, bucks chasing and grunting, thundering turkey gobbles, a distant churning river barge, calm hidden lakes, and every other unimaginable hint of solitude, serenity and natural enjoyment all in one place. Brandywine Island is the rarest of places to experience, and all-the-more-so to own.

Idyllic 823-Acre Equestrian Ranch in Scenic Lake Hughes CA | White Oaks Ranch
For more information, visit:
White Oaks Ranch
24305 Pine Canyon Road
Lake Hughes, CA 93532
Welcome to the idyllic 823-acre White Oaks Ranch. Just an hour north of Downtown Los Angeles, this property can be found cradled in the lush mountains and agricultural pastures overlooking the majestic Antelope Valley. Even the wildest imagination would have trouble envisioning an equestrian estate as rich in history as it is in amenities.
Former Vice President and Chief Executive of Hughes Aircraft Company, Lawrence A. (Pat) Hyland, was on a picnic excursion in the Lake Hughes area when he stopped at an apple stand inquiring about ranches for sale. When he was directed to the White Oaks Ranch, the rest was history. Hyland and his family purchased the land in 1959 to escape the pressures of the city.
While he had no intention of entering the horse breeding field, nor raising a potential world championship horse – as he was a man of technology – he purchased a few horses for his daughter and her friends to ride on weekends. After visiting a neighbor’s ranch to witness a foal evolve as one of the best quarter horses of its time, Hyland and his wife followed suit and went onto to raise a few of their own. Most notably, their racehorse Florentine was a favorite in the 1988 Breeders Championship Classic, winning 5 of 6 races.
The fully functional horse ranch where Florentine was raised includes a 10+ acre hybrid Bermuda grass Polo field, private horse trails on the hillside, a foaling barn, 15 horse pastures, three horse barns, an equipment and hay barn and a mare motel.
Set amidst gently sloping grounds with picturesque vistas, this incredible equestrian retreat helps enhance the property’s rustic yet luxurious finishes. Built in the 1800s, the main house is a recently remodeled Victorian estate. Wander through the property’s 823 acres to enjoy its four seasonal lakes, orchard, greenhouse, outdoor barbecue, vacant barn and animal sanctuary.
A natural energy of peace and tranquility is abundant throughout the meticulously crafted compound. Mr. Hyland’s unwavering care has helped White Oaks Ranch become one of Southern California’s most breathtaking properties. An equestrian estate of this scale affords the discerning buyer the opportunity to step into this quintessential lifestyle at a level that rarely comes to market.

Sisterdale Farms
Extraordinary estate artfully uniting history, function, and tranquil beauty. Sisterdale Farms is a highly productive 310+/- acre low-fenced, live water ranch located in Kendall County. It is perfectly situated between Boerne and Fredericksburg on Sisterdale Road, just under an hour from the San Antonio International Airport. This showplace of a ranch, set within the rare and beautiful riparian valley of the cypress lined Guadalupe River is bursting with history and culture of days past. Baron Ottmar Von Behr settled here in 1847 and gave Sisterdale Texas her name. Von Behr hosted several distinguished visitors, one of which was Frederick Law Olmstead, an American landscape architect, journalist, social critic, and public administrator. Olmstead was recognized as one of the designers of Central Park in New York City. He actually wrote about this Sisterdale ranch, or Texas Latin Settlement as he called it, in his book A Journey Through Texas. The original homestead was brought back to life as it was intended except with a twist, the owners added a full gourmet kitchen, laundry room and two full baths in keeping with the tradition of form, fit, and style to go with the rest of the home. Using skilled craftsmen, the house was taken down to the original paints, varnishes, stains, and flooring dating back to the late 1840s, including the barns surrounding the home. The main residence, both designed and built by Don McDonald in 2015, is perched atop a bluff, nestled into the landscape overlooking a picturesque Coastal field, a stocked pond, the twisting cypress line of the Guadalupe River and the original farmstead. McDonald, an AIA architect based in San Antonio, designs estates that utilize the culture, history, and traditional building materials of the region. Designers such as McDonald, extract real pleasure from both design and construction. The result is a structure rooted in the land upon which it is built, yet playful and idiosyncratic to the unique needs of each individual. The composition and organization of the house is visually ambiguous, thus allowing for seemingly unintentional romanticism, rendered in a natural and picturesque manner. This home was designed to resemble an old German settlement consisting of three buildings formed into one design. The exterior, consisting of articulated rock work with taunt seams support a field of coarse stone known as Sisterdale Limestone. Hardwood hand split shingles weathered to a silver-grey echo the region’s 19th century cypress shingles and sheath roofs. The indoor and outdoor spaces are harmoniously linked, providing for open, modern living and entertaining while allowing for contrasts in scale, intimacy and personality. From the motor court, guests descend to the beautiful front doors that open to one of two long bay loggias looking into and through the exquisite dining room with long range hill country views. The leftwing loggia leads you to the chef’s kitchen open to the family room with walls of windows, an underground wine cellar, home office, utility room and two additional guest suites. The rightwing loggia leads you to the beautiful formal living room, library, master retreat, and upstairs children’s wing. There are hand crafted light fixtures, mechanical grilles and hardware throughout the home designed by Dwaine Simpson and Roy Bellows. The hand carved fireplaces and pizza oven constructed by Russ Thayer, adorn the most used spaces of the home to include the master bedroom and bath, dining room, formal living room, and kitchen. This one of a kind home also boasts a separate guest house and office with 360 degree views. This stunning ranch is sure to meet the needs of the most discriminating buyer.

La Panza Ranch was owned in the 1860’s by Drury James, uncle of the infamous outlaws Jesse & Frank James. The brothers visited and worked on the Ranch in 1868 when Jesse was recovering from bullet wounds inflicted during a bank robbery. He came to bathe in the sulfur springs at Uncle Drury’s Hot Springs Hotel in nearby Paso Robles. Drury James is also credited as one of the three founders of Paso Robles. The brothers stay was without incident and they left a year later. The great California bandido, Tibercio Vasquez also holed up frequently near the ranch before he was hung in 1875 for killing three innocent bystanders during a holdup. Today, La Panza Ranch produces award winning olive oil under the “Outlaw” brand. The Ranch was also involved in the La Panza Gold Rush of 1877. Miners successfully worked along San Juan creek below a 20-foot waterfall in Haystruck Canyon on the ranch. La Panza is quiet now but was once one of the most heavily traveled stagecoach roads between the Coast and the San Joaquin Valley. #clarkcompanyrre #ranchlife #ranchrealestate
