King William, TX Neighborhood Tour
Originally a collection of grand homes in the midst of Mission San Antonio de Valero’s farmland, the King William neighborhood experienced a revitalization in the 1960s, showcasing architectural styles like Greek Revival, Victorian, and Italianate. A mixture of historic homes, shops, museums, and eateries, The King William Historic District offers a breath of fresh air to creatives all over town. The clean, stately manors and eclectic air of the King William neighborhood draw in professionals and married couples interested in something besides the classic suburb. Naturally, due to its location in the heart of the city, downtown attractions like the Alamo, the River Walk, and the Tower of the Americas are only a quick jaunt up the street.

South Alamo St Reconstruction, San Antonio, TX
As a prime consultant, GKW was tasked by the CoSA to develop the South Alamo Street project with feasibility/operations analysis, multi-modal animation visuals, design plans, and construction planning services for corridor reconstruction. The 1,600-foot long street segment within the King William Historic District had originally been part of a San Antonio River Improvement Project under the San Antonio River Authority (SARA). GKW collaborated with the SARA consultants to scope the project so the design improvements could advance under transportation funding. Public involvement was an integral part of project development.
Once the design parameters were validated, GKW led the design team to develop a PS&E plan set for pavement milling and selective reconstruction, new sidewalk, ramps, and improved drainage. The team consulted with the VIA Metropolitan Transit and King William Historic District to consolidate multiple bus stops and improve pedestrian access to the adjacent Blue Star Arts Complex. While no widening was possible in the existing section and street pavement retained its approximate original width, pedestrian amenities and other complete streets features were incorporated into the design. This is a key street for access both inside and outside the neighborhood and was given design features to enhance access to drivers, transit users, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
