Casino Tells Jackpot Winners Machine Malfunctioned
More from Inside Edition:
While some people are lucky enough to win big at casinos, the hardest part can sometimes be collecting the winnings. Inside Edition’s investigative team has found people who thought they'd be taking home huge earnings, only to discover that wasn't the case. Katrina Bookman, 44, hit a $42.9 million jackpot at Resorts World Casino in Queens, N.Y. She posed next to the winning machine as it displayed her earnings. As a crowd started gathering around, security showed up.
RUMRUNNER'S PARADISE
New Year's Eve, 1915 was a party to end all parties in Spokane. At the stroke of midnight, every saloon in the state would be out of business. This would be the last call before statewide prohibition would be enacted, closing the taps four years before the rest of the nation. But even as revelers saluted the new dry year, a lucrative wet underworld was forming between Spokane and Canada.
Island Cabin Getaway - Ben Ure Island, San Juan Islands/Deception Pass
We finally got a chance to reserve the cabin on Ben Ure Island. Unfortunately my remote mic decide to not work, but the audio isn't bad when I am near.
The Ben Ure Cabin at Deception Pass is on Ben Ure Island near Cornet Bay, with views of Puget Sound and Mount Baker. Access is only by beachable human-powered watercraft such as a kayak or rowboat. The modern cabin is 12-by-24-feet in size and features a large deck overlooking the water, as well as a picnic table, fully furnished electric kitchen, queen size futon, electric heat, lights, bathroom and outdoor shower. Visitors must take along their own drinking water to the site.
In the late 1800s, the rowdiness from all the drunk loggers at a dance hall and saloon would echo across this forested island. Trader Ben Ure used the island to smuggle in illegal Chinese immigrants for manual labor around the region.
In the last two decades, the state park has bought 8 out of the 10 acres on Ben Ure Island, including the cabin on the southwest corner that’s now available for rent.
To give the four private homes on the island privacy, the state park allows public access to just cabin renters (maximum two people per stay) with only kayaks or other nonmotorized boats allowed to and from the island.
Ben Ure and his partner Lawrence Pirate Kelly were quite profitable at their human smuggling business and played hide-and-seek with the United States Customs Department for years. Ure's own operation at Deception Pass in the late 1880s consisted of Ure and his Native-American wife. Local tradition has it that his wife would camp on the nearby Strawberry Island (which was visible from the open sea) and signal him with a fire on the island's summit to alert him to whether or not it was safe to attempt to bring the human cargo he illegally transported ashore. For transport, Ure would tie the people up in burlap bags so that if customs agents were to approach he could easily toss the people in bags overboard. The tidal currents would carry the entrapped drowned migrants' bodies to San Juan Island to the north and west of the pass and many ended up in what became known as Dead Man's Bay.

Sharon Bertsch McGrayne: The Theory That Would Not Die | Talks at Google
The Theory That Would Not Die How Bayes' Rule Cracked the Enigma Code, Hunted Down Russian Submarines, and Emerged Triumphant from Two Centuries of Controversy
Bayes' rule appears to be a straightforward, one-line theorem: by updating our initial beliefs with objective new information, we get a new and improved belief. To its adherents, it is an elegant statement about learning from experience. To its opponents, it is subjectivity run amok.
In the first-ever account of Bayes' rule for general readers, Sharon Bertsch McGrayne explores this controversial theorem and the human obsessions surrounding it. She traces its discovery by an amateur mathematician in the 1740s through its development into roughly its modern form by French scientist Pierre Simon Laplace. She reveals why respected statisticians rendered it professionally taboo for 150 years—at the same time that practitioners relied on it to solve crises involving great uncertainty and scanty information, even breaking Germany's Enigma code during World War II, and explains how the advent of off-the-shelf computer technology in the 1980s proved to be a game-changer. Today, Bayes' rule is used everywhere from DNA de-coding to Homeland Security.
Sharon Bertsch McGrayne is the author of numerous books, including Nobel Prize Women in Science: Their Lives, Struggles, and Momentous Discoveries and Prometheans in the Lab: Chemistry and the Making of the Modern World. She is a prize-winning former reporter for Scripps-Howard, Gannett, Crain's, and other newspapers and has spoken at many scientific conferences, national laboratories, and universities in the United States and abroad. She lives in Seattle with her husband, George F. Bertsch, professor of physics at the University of Washington.

GOOD MORNING AMERICA'S HOMEPAGE:
TESLA Autonomy Day Event
TESLA Autonomy Day Event . It’s a big week for Tesla, and it’s kicking off with “Autonomy Investor Day” on April 22. Tesla Autonomy Day is on Mon, April 22nd – watch the event Livestream @11am PDT.
What is Autonomy Investor Day, you ask? The details are vague, but it’s supposed to be a demonstration that explains and showcases Tesla’s autonomous driving technology.
Tesla is holding an event today called ‘Tesla Autonomy Investor Day’ at its headquarters in Palo Alto. Follow along here to get all the details about what is being announced.
The automaker claims to be making a lot of progress in developing its fully self-driving software and it plans a ‘deep dive’ to give everyone a deep dive today:
“Tesla is making significant progress in the development of its autonomous driving software and hardware, including our FSD computer, which is currently in production and which will enable full-self driving via future over-the-air software updates. With a number of very exciting developments coming in the weeks and months ahead, Tesla will host investors on the morning of April 19th at our headquarters in Palo Alto to provide a deep dive into our self-driving technology and road map.”
CEO Elon Musk put it a bit more dramatically when he tweeted earlier this month: “On April 22, Investor Autonomy Day, Tesla will free investors from the tyranny of having to drive their own car.”
Tesla will live-stream the event, which is being held at its headquarters in Palo Alto, at 11 a.m. PT at livestream.tesla.com. You can also watch it on the Tesla YouTube channel.
Later this week, Tesla will report first-quarter earnings (on April 24). The following day is the deadline for Tesla and the Securities and Exchange Commission to report back to a judge on an escalating fight over Musk’s recent tweets, which allegedly violated an agreement between the two parties that was reached last year.
Like so many events surrounding Tesla, there is already drama attached to autonomy day. Tesla was granted a temporary restraining order Friday against a short seller and vocal Twitter critic who recently photographed a Model 3 that was being filmed ahead of the autonomy investor day.
PlainSite.org posted the restraining order, in which Tesla claims Randeep Hothi “stalked, harassed and endangered” employees driving in a Model 3 bearing manufacturer plates and mounted with camera equipment. Tesla claims the individual followed the vehicle for 35 minutes and at one point swerved so close to the vehicle that the side collision avoidance safety feature was triggered.
Tesla vehicles are not considered fully autonomous, or Level 4, a designation by SAE that means the car can handle all aspects of driving in certain conditions without human intervention.
Instead, Tesla vehicles are “Level 2,” a more advanced driver assistance system than most other vehicles on the road today. Musk has promised that the advanced driver assistance capabilities on Tesla vehicles will continue to improve until eventually reaching that full automation high-water mark.
Tesla offers two different advanced driver assistance packages to customers: Autopilot and Full Self-Driving. Autopilot is ADAS that offers a combination of adaptive cruise control and lane steering and is now a standard feature on new cars. The price of vehicles has been adjusted higher to reflect the addition of Autopilot as a standard feature.
Full Self-Driving, or FSD, costs an additional $5,000. (And, to be clear, vehicles are not full self-driving driving.) FSD includes Summon as well as Navigate on Autopilot, an active guidance system that navigates a car from a highway on-ramp to off-ramp, including interchanges and making lane changes. Once drivers enter a destination into the navigation system, they can enable “Navigate on Autopilot” for that trip.
Tesla continues to improve Navigate on Autopilot and the broader FSD system through over-the-air software updates. The company says on its website that FSD will soon be able to recognize and respond to traffic lights and stop signs and automatically drive on city streets.

Judge blocks Trump administration plan to bring back federal executions
A federal judge has temporarily stopped the Trump administration from carrying out the first federal executions in 16 years, citing the “irreparable harm” they would cause to four death-row inmates who are challenging the plan in court. The ruling, issued late Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, argues that those four prisoners would “likely succeed” in their lawsuits because, among several reasons, the government does not have the power to establish a single procedure for all federal executions. Advertisement A plan unveiled over the summer by Attorney General William Barr, a longtime supporter of the death penalty, established the use of a single drug, pentobarbital sodium, to replace a problematic three-drug cocktail that had been previously used. But the D.C. judge said a federal statute “expressly provides” that executions should be carried out in the manner prescribed by the state where the sentence is imposed. Chutkan said the public is “not served by short-circuiting legitimate judicial process.” Instead, she wrote, the public is “greatly served by attempting to ensure that the most serious punishment is imposed lawfully.” Her ruling comes just weeks before the first of five planned federal executions. White supremacist Daniel Lewis Lee, who was convicted of killing a family of three more than two decades ago, was set to face the death penalty Dec. 9 at a federal penitentiary in Indiana. [More U.S. News] Google admits its ‘dark skin’ face scan project violated internal policy, leading to overhaul of data collection after Daily News exposé » Chutkan’s decision applies to Lee and three other inmates facing executions in December or January. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe first foreign leader to meet with Trump
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe becomes the first world leader to meet President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday, seeking reassurances over the future of the U.S.-Japan security and trade relations.
Abe meets with Trump in New York, where the incoming president is working on setting up an administration after his surprise election victory last week that has injected new uncertainty into old U.S. alliances.
Trump's campaign rhetoric caused consternation in many world capitals, including Tokyo. Trump has said he would demand that allies such as Japan and South Korea contribute more to the cost of basing U.S. troops in their countries.
Such comments have worried Japan at a time when the threat from North Korea is rising, and China is challenging the U.S.-led security status quo in the Pacific.
The State Department has said it had yet to hear from Trump's transition team, raising the prospect of the Republican holding the meeting with Abe without any input from career diplomats with deep experience dealing with Japan.
Both Japan and South Korea already pay considerable sums to support the U.S. bases, and note that it's also in America's strategic interest to deploy troops in the region.
Trump has suggested that Japan and South Korea could obtain their own nuclear weapons, rather than rely on U.S. deterrence, which risks a triggering an atomic arms races in Northeast Asia.
South Korea currently pays more than $800 million a year — about 50 percent of non-personnel costs of the U.S. military deployment on its soil — and is paying $9.7 billion more for relocating U.S. military bases, according to the Congressional Research Service. Japan pays about $2 billion a year, about half of the cost of the stationing U.S. forces.
