Bar Harbor, Maine 2012 - Day 6
Day 6 - 07/04/2012
4th of July
Our final full day! On this foggy, rainy morning, we drove past all the residents and tourists setting up for the big 4th of July parade to the Blueberry Pancake Breakfast held in the Bar Harbor Athletic Field. The streets were so packed, Derek ended up parking on the field itself next to a huge row of cars. Just as he parked, a CW news vehicle pulled up right next to him! A dandy keyboard player set the mood for the eclectic craft fair and events as we walked around enjoying Americana atmosphere. We missed the beginning of the parade, but the part we saw was definitely unique and totally awesome. Dancing lobsters!
The highlight here was the lobster races. This was actually a huge event, but we only caught the very first race. If only we placed a bet! Derek couldn't take all the lobsters taunting him, so we hit another lobster pound - Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound. More blueberry pie for me! We had some time to kill before our dinner reservations/fireworks show, so we decided to play a little mini-golf at Pirate's Cove. As expected, we didn't catch any of our holes-in-one on camera, but Derek got plenty of my less-than-excellent hits. There were 2 courses, an original course and the harder Blackbeard's Challenge. Needless to say, Derek won both.
We had dinner reservations at our hotel's partner restaurant, the Looking Glass, which would have had a perfect view of the 4th of July fireworks right off the pier. Unfortunately the night was so foggy, all we could see where the flashes among the clouds and a few sparks at the big finale. But that's ok, our meals were perfect! Pan Seared Herb Crusted Lamb Chops and Asparagus Strudel to start, followed by the Seafood Delight for Derek (lobster, scallops, scrimp, and halibut) and a Halibut Special for me. Yes that's right, I had fish, and I loved it. Thank you Maine! :)
Acadia National Park in 4K - Town of Bar Harbor, Maine!
Bar Harbor, Maine, originally incorporated as Eden on February 23, 1796, has a world renowned ambiance that blends seashore community, Down East character, and the famous Maine Lobster. Part of Hancock County, it is the best known town on Mount Desert Island with an approximate population of 5,235 (per year 2010 census) and 28,800 scenic acres. Included within the municipality are the villages of Hulls Cove, Salisbury Cove, and Town Hill, as is a large portion of Acadia National Park. Because of this, people often refer to it all as being part of the same concept and place, as well as the same state of mind.
Bar Harbor sits in a particular coastal part of the State referred to as “Down East” Maine. This term has a long history dating back over two hundred years when large schooners, filled with goods on their way back to England or elsewhere in Europe, had to sail down wind to the east from the larger population centers like Boston, Philadelphia, and New York - hence, Down East. While visiting, you will often hear the tell-tail sound of a “Mainer” speaking with that special Down East accent where the “r” sound is being dropped. Bar Harbor is pronounced like “Bah-Hah-Bah” and lobster sounds like “lob-stuh!” (You may want to begin practicing now.)
