BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK SOUTH RIM TRAIL
Join me as I take two of our daughters on a trip to see one of my favorite places ever.....The South Rim. I've had the pleasure of getting to see many beautiful places in my hiking career. Many iconic spots in Colorado, California, Arkansas, New Mexico, Tennessee and many others, but something I can't explain draws me to the South Rim. One day I hope to have my ashes spread there. Mostly in the hopes of someone else being able to appreciate the shear beauty and awe of this spot. This was my daughter Amanda's first backpacking trip and she did awesome. She's active in the outdoors with running, helping to keep state parks litter free, and was a Camp Gladiator trainer for a few years so I'm glad I was able to keep up. LOL Jeni and I have also hiked various state parks, some of the Georgia section of the Appalachian Trail, Sylamore Creek Trail, and Eagle Rock Loop in Arkansas and has become quite good and knowledgeable on the subject of backpacking. Makes old dad feel pretty good, Haha ! Having these girls together on the trail was a dream come true for me and I certainly hope this is not the last trip for us together. I had a blast with them even though our plans went nowhere close to what they should have been, in true backpackers spirit we went with the flow and made the best of things and came out with a great, memorable trip. I thank my son n laws, Daniel and Jesse for holding down the home front with the kids so the girls were able to make this trip and if you've ever had any notion of visiting Big Bend National Park I highly recommend the South Rim Trail. It's an experience you won't soon forget. Thanks for watching and ALL THE BEST, Tony
Backpacking Big Bend NP, Texas - March 2019
This is a three day backpacking trip in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park, Texas in March 2019. Trails hiked include, Laguna Meadows, Colima, Boot Canyon, South Rim, and Pinnacles. Anyone planning on hiking in the Chisos Mountains should bring an adequate supply of water. Springs and other water sources are unreliable even in the cool months. Also, high temperatures during summer, especially in the desert areas, can be dangerous. A backcountry campsite permit is required and is on a first come first serve basis up to 24 hours in advance. Campsites and rooms at the Chisos Basin trailhead can be hard to come by during holidays, spring break, etc. The next closest town with lodging is 30 miles west in Study Butte/Terlingua, Texas. For more information contact Big Bend National Park. Website: nps.gov/bibe

Big Bend National Park, TX
Hello from Big Bend National Park in Texas!
We spent 4 days in Big Bend and it truly is BIG! It was so big we spent 2 days in a campground on one side and then moved to the other side for another 2 days just to see it all! We were there on 4/1 and it was HOT...just over 100 degrees with no AC in the camper because the campgrounds are all self contained, no hookups!
We had a great time hiking to a hot spring right on the Rio Grande river; taking a row boat across the Rio Grande into Mexico for a Burro ride into town for lunch; and hiking a beautiful ravine to finally walk in the cool stream waters! And, to top that off, I had the rare chance to take a photo of a Great Horned Owl in the wild!

Big Bend National Park did not disappoint. We begin our next season with an amazing journey up Christmas Mountain Range. Just north of the western entrance to Big Bend National Park is the Christmas Mountain Range. Covering approximately 15 square miles, summiting at 5,728 feet, the mountain offers breathtaking views. Since 2011 the Christmas Mountains have been the property of the Texas State University System. Serving as the gatekeeper, you must obtain a signed permit from the Terlingua Ranch Lodge office to access the key to the mountains.

The View from the South Rim Trail, Big Bend National Park
A quick pan shot from the South Rim Trail in Big Bend National Park in Texas.
The visibility was pretty good this day and you can see far into the distance. On really clear days you can see to Mexico.
The South Rim Trail is a long hike. There are several different ways you can go to get there from the basin. Depending on which way you go up and back down the hike can be as long at 14 miles. The view is well worth the trip.

Backpacking the Chisos Mountains | Big Bend National Park | Austin, TX
Backpacking through Big Bend National Park over Thanksgiving 2019.
Big Bend is unlike anything I have ever experienced. Driving in it gave me a similar impression to Death Vally, but then the Chisos Mountains come into view. The Chisos Mountain Range is totally contained within Big Bend National Park which is very unique. The tallest point (Emory Peak) is at 7,825' above sea level. The mountains provide incredible views out over the ultra-flat plains that surround them. Thanksgiving is supposedly one of the busiest days of the year at Big Bend, but you wouldn't know it. I would compare it to a slow day at Mt. Rainier National Park. Texas is not the first state that comes to mind when you think hiking, but this park is worth the trip.

Big Bend National Park in the U.S. state of Texas has national significance as the largest protected area of Chihuahuan Desert topography and ecology in the United States. It contains more than 1,200 species of plants, more than 450 species of birds, 56 species of reptiles, and 75 species of mammals. The national park covers 801,163 acres.
Big Bend is one of the largest, most remote, and least-visited national parks in the lower 48 United States. In recent years, only 300,000–350,000 visitors have entered the park annually.
Big Bend's primary attraction is its hiking and backpacking trails. Particularly notable among these are the Chimneys Trail, which visits a rock formation in the desert; the Marufo Vega trail, a loop trail that passes through scenic canyons on the way to and from the Rio Grande; the South Rim trail which circles the high mountains of the Chisos; and the Outer Mountain Loop trail in the Chisos, which incorporates parts of the South Rim loop, descends into the desert along the Dodson Trail, and then returns to the Chisos Basin, completing a 30-mile loop. Other notable locations include Santa Elena Canyon, Grapevine Hills, and the Mule Ears, two imposing rock towers in the middle of the desert. Professional backpacking guide services provide trips in the park.
The park administers 118 miles (190 km) of the Rio Grande for recreational use. Professional river outfitters provide tours of the river. Use of a personal boat is permitted, but a free river float permit is required. In June 2009, the Department of Homeland Security began treating all float trips as trips that had left the country and required participants to have an acceptable form of identification such as a passport to re-enter the country.
Five paved roads are in Big Bend. Persimmon Gap to Panther Junction is a 28-mile (45 km) road from the north entrance of the park to park headquarters at Panther Junction. Panther Junction to Rio Grande Village is a 21-mile (34 km) road that descends 2,000 feet (610 m) from the park headquarters to the Rio Grande. Maverick Entrance Station to Panther Junction is a 23-mile (37 km) route from the western entrance of the park to the park headquarters. Chisos Basin Road is 6 miles (10 km) long and climbs to 5,679 feet (1,731 m) above sea level at Panther Pass before descending into the Chisos Basin. The 30-mile (48 km) Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive leads to the Castolon Historic District and Santa Elena Canyon.
The park was named after the area, which is bounded by a large bend in the river and Texas-Mexico border.
Despite its harsh desert environment, Big Bend has more than 1200 species of plants (including 60 cactus species), over 600 species of vertebrates, and about 3600 insect species. The variety of life is largely due to the diverse ecology and changes in elevation between the dry, hot desert, the cool mountains, and the fertile river valley.
Big Bend The Movie - A trek to the top of Texas
Follow Adventure Monkey on another quest to seek fun with friends. From the frigid waters of the Rio Grande to the summit of Emory Peak. We trek across the Southern Rim Trail and Kayak through the Mariscal Canyon. Watching the sunset from Sotol Vista to camping out in the Gravel Pits off of the River Road and Black Gap Road. We roam the desert scenery and walk through the abandoned Mariscal Mine and take the trail to the ends of the Santa Elena Cut.
