San Antonio Missions National Historical Park Boundary Expansion Act of 2013
Thank you, Mr. Speaker and Chairman for allotting me this time to speak in full support of HR 885. Additionally, I would like to thank Chairman Hastings and Ranking Member Markey for their work on this vital piece of legislation.
I'm proud to be an original co-sponsor of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park Boundary Expansion Act of 2013.
This bill would expand the boundary of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, including Espada Missions of the 23rd Congressional District of Texas and study potential redevelopment on the south side of San Antonio.
Texas' missions are inextricably part of our culture and history. Like the families of their founders, the missions trace their history back decades before the United States ever claimed its independence.
All four missions are within several miles of each other. Individually, the missions of San Antonio are marvels of architecture and history. Together, they are an incomparable treasure allowing each of us to come face to face with our nation's proud past. Enacting this legislation is critical to completion of the world famous San Antonio Mission Trail.
The trail is a national example of public and private cooperation. The community needs the resources and expertise of the National Park Service. Yet, the Park Service could not operate without the investment of time and money by the local community.
As the congressman for Espada Mission - and as a personal fan of the missions and their history - I believe the National Park Service and the City of San Antonio will benefit historically and economically with passage of this Boundary Extension Act.
It's rare that we can protect key areas, preserve history and create jobs all at the same time. Expanding the mission boundaries will do all of that - and more.
Thank you for this time and I encourage my colleagues to support and pass HR 885.
I yield back.

The Alamo & Spanish Missions in San Antonio
In the 18th century, Franciscan priests from Spain established five Catholic missions along the San Antonio River, primarily to extend Spain’s dominion northward from Mexico, but also to convert and educate the native population. Today, the five missions (Alamo, Mission San José, Mission Concepción, Mission San Juan and Mission Espada) represent the largest concentration of Spanish colonial missions in North America, and they have been nominated for World Heritage Status.

There wasn't much we could explore cause we couldn't go inside, but there was a flashing light from the inside through one of the windows 3:26. My wife said she heard noises through a metal screen door that sounded like furniture being moved. My camera was out of focus a lot which they say indicates the presence of spirits.
The Alamo and Texas History | San Antonio, TX
I had no idea we actually lost the Battle of the Alamo. Texas has a crazy history and I can see now why Texans have so much pride.
This is the 3rd vlog in a series of 7 Texas videos. Check out all the Texas vlogs here:
In this video I explore the Alamo grounds, including all the interesting demonstrations and explanations offered by the guides and Living History Encampment. I also go in the Alamo and the Long Barrack Exhibition. Everything at the Alamo is free.
At 2:20, I also check out the Battle for Texas Experience. This is a private museum that costs $20 plus $6 for the audio guide. I thought it was worthwhile and the end battle scene (at 3:55) was really cool.
Definitely check out the Alamo and learn about the battle for yourself. It's fascinating.

Driving Downtown Streets - Houston Street - San Antonio Texas USA - Episode 76.
Starting Point: .
Houston Street is the name of one of San Antonio's oldest and most popular streets. Being adjacent to The Alamo where the Battle of the Alamo occurred, some buildings on the street sustained cannon fire during the war. The historic Majestic Theater is located on this street.
San Antonio, officially the City of San Antonio, is the seventh most populated city in the United States of America and the second most populated city in the state of Texas, with a population of 1,409,019. It was the fastest growing of the top 10 largest cities in the United States from 2000 to 2010, and the second from 1990 to 2000.
San Antonio was named for Saint Anthony of Padua, whose feast day is on June 13, by a 1691 Spanish expedition in the area. It is notable for Spanish colonial missions, the Alamo, the River Walk, the Tower of the Americas, the Alamo Bowl, and Marriage Island. Commercial entertainment includes SeaWorld and Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme parks, and according to the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau, the city is visited by about 32 million tourists a year. The city is home to the five-time NBA champion San Antonio Spurs and hosts the annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, one of the largest such events in the country.
The US armed forces have numerous facilities in San Antonio: Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base, Randolph Air Force Base (which constitute Joint Base San Antonio), and Lackland AFB/Kelly Field Annex, with Camp Bullis and Camp Stanley located outside the city. Kelly Air Force Base operated out of San Antonio until 2001, when the airfield was transferred to Lackland AFB. The remaining portions of the base were developed as Port San Antonio, an industrial/business park and aerospace complex. San Antonio is home to six Fortune 500 companies and the South Texas Medical Center, the only medical research and care provider in the South Texas region.
The missions of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park along with the Alamo, became part of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites on July 5, 2015.[citation needed] The San Antonio Missions became the 23rd U.S. site on the World Heritage List, which includes the Grand Canyon and the Statue of Liberty.
Economy
San Antonio has a diversified economy with about a $96.8 billion metropolitan Gross Domestic Product. This ranks the city 4th among Texas metropolitan areas and 38th in the United States. San Antonio's economy is focused primarily within military, health care, government civil service, financial services, oil and gas and tourism sectors. Within the past twenty years, San Antonio has become a significant location for American-based call centers and has added a significant manufacturing sector centered around automobiles.
Attractions
San Antonio is a popular tourist destination, often referred to simply as SA.
The Alamo Mission in San Antonio (the Alamo), located in Downtown, is Texas' top tourist attraction. Because of the mission, San Antonio is often called the Alamo City.[53]
The River Walk, which meanders through the Downtown area, is the city's second-most-visited attraction, giving it the additional nickname of River City. Extended an additional 13 miles between 2009-2013, the landscaped walking and bike path line the San Antonio River from the Museum Reach beginning at the Historic Pearl Brewery through downtown, Downtown Reach, past the Blue Star's Eagleland to the Mission Reach ending at Loop 410 South past Mission San Juan Capistrano.[54] Lined with numerous shops, bars, and restaurants, as well as the Arneson River Theater, this attraction is transformed into an impressive festival of lights during the Christmas and New Year holiday period, and is suffused with the local sounds of folklorico and flamenco music during the summer, particularly during celebrations such as the Fiesta Noche del Rio.
