Seattle - City Video Guide
Seattle, on the coast between Puget Sound and Lake Washington is one of North America's most beautiful cities.
In Downtown Seattle, you will discover some of the city's oldest buildings around Pioneer Square. The Seattle Waterfront is famous for its seafood restaurants and pleasure cruises, and it's a short, steep climb to Pike Place Market.
A short drive north from downtown brings you to Woodland Park Zoo, the Seattle Museum of Flight, or Lake Union.
The Seattle Center is home to the Pacific Science Center and the popular International Fountain, as well as Seattle's most recognized landmark, the Space Needle. On a clear day, the observation deck at the top offers views as far as Mount Rainier.
Meanwhile Kerry Park on the south side of Queen Anne Hill offers a great view of Seattle and the Space Needle itself, which is particularly impressive when the sun goes down.

Elegant Resort-Style Estate in Bellevue, Washington
Presented by Brazen Sotheby's International Realty
For more information go to
This resort-like estate elegantly unfolds before your eyes as you drive down the street bordered by 100-foot tall Lombardy poplar trees, affectionately called Poplar Lane. You are warmly welcomed by a serpentine driveway leading uphill to a hidden formal entry and motor court, the house nestled into the hillside. Designed and built by a distinguished team of designers and contractors, this property is the masterpiece of two years of careful planning, and uncompromising vision. Seattle Landscape Architect, Brooks Kolb, began the project by working closely with renowned architect, Brandt Hollinger to locate a brand new home on a rare 3-acre site in the heart of Bellevue, Washington. His design retained the native feel of the site, preserving the dense tree cover of Douglas Fir, Vine Maple and Western Red Cedars. He also laid the foundation to perfectly orient the house, doors, windows, and the pool and tennis court to seamlessly maximize the sun exposure. With a goal towards a year-round bloom, he hand picked all of the plants and vegetation and strategically placed them throughout the 3-acre site creating a private, fun, resort-like feel with lots of gathering places. Hollinger, together with Doug Rasar Interiors, understood the owner's desire for a warm, welcoming, and relaxed feel, and created a home that exudes the essence of Ohana - the Hawaiian word for family. His design was inspired from his long-standing admiration of two English architects from the very early 20th century, both notable for their designs of country and manor houses. He used characteristics such as steep but hovering slate-clad hip roofs set atop fairly severe stucco and masonry walls, usually with large continuous groupings of windows, bays and bow windows and prominent chimneys. In addition, he incorporated the use of ornamentation and exuberant moldings and trims, both inside and out, that helped enrich the design, and also served to give the overall structure a scale that the owner could relate to and live comfortably in. He also used hidden elements such as a private front entry shielded from public view and only visible to visitors to the property, and a four-car parking garage that is concealed from the main facade of the house. The organization of the house was based on the clustering of adult/ more formal uses in one wing, and children/more utilitarian uses in the other. He decided to connect them with a hub consisting of a two-story grand entry and family activity spaces- big bold spaces that expressed the largeness of the house. This also gave him the opportunity to draw sunlight into the center of the house all throughout the day.

Museum of Art/WSU Launch Party
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University is one giant step closer to having a new Museum of Art on its Pullman campus, thanks to a multimillion dollar contribution by one of the leading arts patrons in the United States.
Jordan D. Schnitzer of Portland, Ore., who owns a vast collection of contemporary fine art prints and who has supported the arts in numerous ways and locations throughout the country, joined WSU President Elson S. Floyd to announce the largest act of private patronage to the arts in WSU history. The announcement was celebrated amid a new exhibit at the Museum of Art, “Made in U.S.A.: Rosenquist/Ruscha,” which features works from Jordan D. Schnitzer and the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation.
“Jordan Schnitzer’s investment sets the foundation for making the dream of a new WSU Museum of Art a reality,” said Floyd, “and his gift strongly positions us to raise the rest of what we need to complete the project.
“His commitment to the arts in general, and this project in particular, presents the possibility of a transformational development for our Pullman campus, and we thank him for that.”
Schnitzer said his contribution reflects his fundamental belief that the arts reflect the highest ideals of our society. “Every person, especially young people, must have the opportunity to experience the arts as part of their lives. What better place to help further that goal than our college campuses?”
A native Oregonian, Schnitzer is president of Harsch Investment Properties and manages the company’s commercial real estate assets in Oregon, Washington California, Nevada and Arizona. He has been an active leader in Oregon civic causes for more than 35 years. He has been recognized for his philanthropy with numerous honors and awards throughout Oregon, including the Governor’s Arts Award and awards from the University of Oregon, Marylhurst University and Portland State University. In 2005, the University of Oregon renamed its art museum in his honor to recognize Schnitzer’s 26 years of leadership there. In 2009, he received the Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award from the national Association of Fundraising Professionals.
Schnitzer’s gift launches the $15 million campaign for a new and larger Museum of Art at WSU into the public phase of fundraising. His pledge brings the total financial commitments for the project to $9 million, leaving an additional $6 million to be raised before breaking ground. Currently, the museum is located in the Fine Arts building with a single gallery in which to display its permanent collection and temporary exhibits.
“Our goal has always been to build a stunning piece of architecture that not only houses art, but one that welcomes the entire community and literally represents — and stimulates — creativity,” said Christopher Bruce, director of the WSU Museum of Art. “We look forward to a building that showcases great objects, opens space for art that has yet to be dreamed of, and ultimately, sends the unmistakable message that this university values the way the arts connect across disciplines, generations and cultural backgrounds.”
Once the fundraising is complete, the new Museum of Art will be located on the site of the current Safety Building, across from the Compton Union Building on Terrell Mall. It will have a prominent and welcoming front entrance, visitors’ pavilion and multiple galleries.
In March 2013, following a three-month competitive process, MOA Director Bruce announced the selection of Olson Kundig Architects to design the new museum. Jim Olson, a founding partner of the Seattle-based, internationally renowned design firm, will lead the project.

How We Got Here: A Reckoning with U.S. and Tacoma history
The video investigates how the U.S. and Tacoma region were shaped by racist laws, policies and discriminatory practices and argues these systems can only be dismantled through strategies of recognition, restitution, reconciliation and a sustained commitment to equity.
Lego Architecture Seattle Space Needle Unboxing and Assembly
In this video I assemble the Lego Architecture Seattle Space Needle. It's fairly simple to assemble with not a lot of parts and takes about as long to assemble as the length of the video. The only part I don't show is the trimming of the long pieces to the length shown in the instruction manual.
This Lego structure is high quality and fun to assemble.

Olympia: State Capitol
The Washington State Capitol or Legislative Building in Olympia is the home of the government of the state of Washington. It contains chambers for the Washington State Legislature and offices for the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state and treasurer and is part of a campus consisting of several buildings. Buildings for the Washington Supreme Court, executive agencies and the Washington Governor's Mansion are part of the capitol campus.
After Olympia became capital city of the Washington Territory in 1853, the city's founder, Edmund Sylvester, gave the legislature 12 acres (4.9 ha) of land upon which to build the capitol, located on a hill overlooking what is now known as Capitol Lake. A two-story wood-frame building was constructed on the site, where the legislature met starting in 1854. When President Benjamin Harrison approved Washington's state constitution in 1889, he donated 132,000 acres (530 km2) of federal lands to the state with the stipulation that income from the lands was to be used solely for construction of the state capitol.
The legislature formed the State Capitol Commission in 1893 to oversee the creation of a new capitol on the property in Olympia, now known as the Old Capitol and home to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.
The courthouse became the location of all agencies of the state government and within a few years the legislature decided the building was too small and a new State Capitol Commission convened in 1911. Construction of the campus began in 1912, the Legislative Building was completed in 1928. Additional buildings on the campus were constructed during the next several decades.
The Capitol Campus was placed on the National Register of Historic Districts in 1974 and contains or contributes to some of the most valued views in the State including the Olympic Mountains, Puget Sound, Mt. Rainier, the Capitol Dome and the Capitol Group of buildings on the hill. The design of the Capitol Campus is a grand example of the City Beautiful style of the Progressive era of the early 20th Century
The state seal, which is featured throughout the buildings on the state flag, tapestries, railing, door handles and elsewhere. There is even a bronze version of the seal in the floor of the rotunda. Over time, George Washington's nose has worn down due to foot traffic on it and it is now roped-off to prevent further damage.
The Winged Victory monument, commemorating World War I, is one of the most prominent. Sculpted by Alonzo Victor Lewis from bronze, its granite pedestal has four inscriptions: They fought to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom, and democracy (facing south); the state seal and To the memory of the citizens of the State of Washington who lost their lives in the service of the United States during the World War 1917–1918 (facing east); Their sacrifice was to vindicate the principles of peace and justice in the life of the world (facing west); and Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friend (facing north). Dedicated May 30, 1938, the monument has been restored numerous times since then.
The Tivoli Fountain replica was designed by the architects Wohleb, Wohleb, and Bennett. Inscribed upon it is Replica of the Tivoli Fountain—Tivoli Park, Copenhagen, Denmark. Presented to the State of Washington by Olympia-Tumwater Foundation. Peter G. Schmidt, President. 1953.
Three major earthquakes have affected the capital since its construction in 1949, 1965 and 2001.
After the September 11th attacks, there had been a security checkpoint at the entrance to the Capitol building, complete with magnetometer and x-ray machine, but security has since reverted to its original state. The Capitol is one of the few in the country, along with Texas and Kentucky, with no restrictions on carrying firearms.
