Time lapse movie of the automated floor transformation of the audience
Tobin Center for the Performing Arts
With an expected unveiling in September of 2013, San Antonio's famed Municipal Auditorium will be renovated and reborn as The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. Featuring exceptional sound, acoustics and seating arrangements, The Tobin Center will become the finest performance facility in the San Antonio area.
This world-class facility will allow performing artists from around the globe to take the stage and enthrall audiences with their unique forms of music, theater and dance. The Tobin Center will also serve as home to a number of resident companies, such as the San Antonio Symphony, San Antonio Opera and Ballet San Antonio.
Beyond live entertainment, The Tobin Center will offer events for the entire community to enjoy, celebrate, experience and, most importantly, participate. There will be family programs, youth performances and educational opportunities for local students as well as adults.
While the Tobin Center of the Performing Arts will transform San Antonio's arts scene, the historic character of Municipal Auditorium will be preserved. The architectural beauty of this majestic performance hall complements the grand vision that will ultimately reveal itself as a state-of-the-art performance hall.
The Tobin Center will be architecturally and acoustically on par with any facility throughout the world. The Tobin Center will serve a new gateway to the Museum Reach of the expanded River Walk and its convenient downtown location provides easy access to some 3,000 parking spaces inside a five-minute walk.
The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts is an extraordinary community investment.
Tobin Center for the Performing Arts: Construction Time Lapse
Marmon Mok, in association with LMN Architects, is providing architectural services for the renovation and expansion of the 1920's era Municipal Auditorium into a world class performing arts center.
This time lapse video, taken from the Marmon Mok offices, goes through demolition and construction from July 2011 to May 2013.
The design retains the façade elements, public entrance, and primary circulation of this historic landmark and completely replaces the interior auditorium structure with a multi-purpose performance hall that will serve the symphony, ballet, opera, touring productions and a wide variety of community events. The new plan is a juxtaposition of new and old elements which captures space for a 250 seat, studio theatre and the main hall which provides seating for over 1,750 patrons.
The exterior of the Tobin will be enwrapped with a sweeping metallic veil to unite the disparate volumetric parts into a distinctive visual composition. Exterior lighting will animate the new skin and softly illuminate the rhythmic, detailed articulation of the historic façade. Through innovative uses of materials, adjustable acoustics, lighting and color, the mood of the space will be changeable to adapt to artistic spirit and technical need of various performance events.
The Performing Arts Center is sited on the banks of the San Antonio Riverwalk. A new plaza will cascade from street level down to the Riverwalk and a 500 seat outdoor theatre.
As of June 2013, construction for the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts is 60% complete with steel erection and concrete placement finished. Current activity is focused on installing the building's temporary roofing and completing the exterior skin with insulated metal panels so the interior finish work can begin in June. On the interior, wall framing, as well as mechanical, electrical and plumbing work are ongoing, with the framing of the lobby's undulating feature wall being the most visually notable item currently being framed. The auditorium is filled with scaffolding floor to ceiling and work on the finishes and balcony fronts have begun. Cleaning and repair of the historic façade of the building will take approximately five months to complete.

Tobin Center
A versatile, world-class performing arts facility for the nation’s seventh-largest city. A center where our school children receive specialized education opportunities and exposure to extraordinary performances. A new magnet for downtown revitalization, located on the River Walk leading up to the new Museum Reach. And finally, a much-needed home where our resident performing arts groups can grow and thrive.
Situated along the banks of the River walk in the city’s heart, the historic Municipal Auditorium, with its original facade preserved, has been transformed into a world-class venue. This theatrical icon is once again the pride of the River and a shining beacon of creativity, fine art and downtown development. There is no better place — anywhere — to see and hear a live performance.
The Tobin Center, a state-of-the-art performance hall, a 240-seat studio theater, and an outdoor performance plaza connected to the River Walk with a permanent 30 FT video wall and water taxi portal.

ARTS San Antonio presents Mejia Ballet International's 2015 The Nutcracker
Set to Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky’s beloved score, The Nutcracker is, by far, the most widely attended ballet in America. Prima Ballerinas Olga Pavlova and Marina Goshko and Principal Dancers Yevgeni Anfinogenov and Andrey Prikhodko will star in ARTS San Antonio’s presentation of the beloved classic.
Russian Prima Ballerina Olga Pavlova is hailed as “The New Pavlova by Dance magazine, referring to the famous Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. Born in Moscow, Russia, Olga Pavlova graduated from the famed Bolshoi Ballet Academy. Marina Goshko, Russian native, graduated from the Buryat State Choreographic School. She became a soloist with the Moscow Classical Ballet.
This production of The Nutcracker is choreographed and directed by founder of Mejia Ballet International, Paul Mejia, a well-recognized name in ballet. Mejia is a former principal dancer under the famous choreographer George Balanchine at New York City Ballet. He danced principal roles in many Balanchine ballets. Mejia’s production of The Nutcracker continues the holiday tradition of this very popular ballet.
San Antonio's MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM --(demo. & reno. photos)-- PART 3
----This PART 3 video ( of a 5 part series ) consists of three groups of photos I took on 11/27/11, 12/1/11, and 12/3/11 documenting the progress of the demolition of most of San Antonio's iconic downtown MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM. Basically, only its beautiful grand facade will remain and will be incorporated into the new design of what will be the TOBIN CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS.
----Proponents of the project claim the renovation will offer a major acoustical improvement over the original auditorium. Hope the new center is as architecturally impressive and comfortable as the original building. I think the seating capacity of the new center will be too small.
