THE TRAVEL DIARIES - A SOCIAL PANTS EXPERIMENT
Welcome to The Social Pants Experiment. This season, The Travel Diaries.
Last year, I spent my time on daily Vlogs. What did I learn? My Travel Videos were well received. So, this year (2019) I'm focusing on fewer videos with greater depth of content.
And, specifically, focused on my extensive travels around the globe.
The term Travel Vlogger gets thrown around a lot these days. It's a standard on YouTube. Consistently trending on Instagram, and can be confusing for those seeking a taste of reality. Let's change that right now!
I write for fun. I travel out of necessity. And, this year- these are my travel diaries. I hope you enjoy.

Controversy over Genetic Engineering in Agriculture: The good, the bad, and the righteous
Today's farmers feed more than 7 billion people, and we can trace much of this bounty and efficiency to traditional agricultural technologies, especially plant breeding, fertilizers, and chemical management of soil and weeds — major ingredients of the first Green Revolution. However, population growth and increased demands for higher quality food will require large improvements in agricultural productivity going forward, while we minmize the undesired environmental and social effects of more intense farming systems.
Direct modification of DNA, or genetic engineering, is a new tool for plant breeding that has spread at unprecedented speed over the last two decades. However, it has also come up against strong social and legal resistance in many countries, making its future significance as a tool to promote productivity and sustainability uncertain.
At the Oct. 14 Corvallis Science Pub, Steve Strauss, director of Oregon State University's Outreach in Biotechnology program, will discuss the pros and cons of gene technology for agriculture. He will review what the technology actually is, how it is similar and different from conventional breeding, and how it has impacted agriculture to date. He will also discuss diverse sources of the controversy surrounding it, including the numerous myths and confusing science that pervade the online world. Gene technology is a valuable tool, not a silver bullet, Strauss says. It can do a lot, but it must be used with due caution and as part of integrated, ecologically guided management systems for sustained benefit.
He also argues that it appears capable of providing major humanitarian benefits to the poor by improving nutrition and food security. Despite the fears and growing legal barriers, the stakes in this debate are too high to turn away from. We must find socially acceptable ways to move forward.
Strauss is a distinguished professor in the Oregon State College of Forestry and a Fellow of the Leopold Leadership Program at Stanford University. He is also the director of the Tree Biosafety and Genomics Research Cooperative at OSU that conducts research on mitigation of risks from genetic engineering in forestry.
On Ron Paul's Foreign Policy
This is an open message to conservatives who think they've refuted Ron Paul's foreign policy arguments. This was inspired by the numerous strawman arguments I've heard on talk radio and Fox News. It's fairly obvious to me that most conservatives don't understand his views.
About me: I've been a registered Republican ever since I first registered to vote over 30 years ago. I've voted for every Republican presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan. I've never voted for a Democrat in my life. It's only been recently that I've become disillusioned with the GOP. It started when the Republicans had full control of the federal government and the size and scope of government STILL expanded! I first decided to support Ron Paul simply because I knew that as president he would veto any bill that increased spending. As I started to delve into his positions more I realized however, that he was what I've been looking for in a candidate all along -- a politician who wants to end government intrusion into ALL areas not specifically spelled out in the constitution.

The State of the Union address is a speech presented by the President of the United States to a joint session of the United States Congress, typically delivered annually. The address not only reports on the condition of the nation but also allows the President to outline his legislative agenda (for which he needs the cooperation of Congress) and national priorities. This album contains recordings of addresses from James Monroe and John Quincy Adams. (Wikipedia and Linette Geisel)

Interview with John E. Pease, WWII veteran. CCSU Veterans History Project
Interview conducted by Eileen Hurst. Pease enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in December of 1943. He left for basic training on Parris Island on January 19, 1944. After completion of basic training, Pease was sent to Camp Lejeune (NC) for additional training and unit assignment. His unit shipped to American Samoa on a former luxury liner. On American Samoa, he learned how to use the 30 caliber Browning machine gun, and he and a squad of eight others kept guard on the island. After five months on American Samoa, his unit was shipped to Wellington, New Zealand to pick up additional troops. Pease's unit spent 57 days aboard the ship awaiting the troop's arrival. From there they sailed to the Tarawa Atoll, where the Battle of Tarawa had just begun. Pease describes the battle in detail, and what the typical marine survived during the battle with the Japanese. From Tarawa he was sent to a naval hospital in Hawaii because he contracted Filariasis, a disease that is passed to humans from mosquitoes. Due to this disease Pease was not sent back to the Pacific theater after his hospitalization. Instead he was sent to a naval shipyard in Birmington, WA, where he worked as a guard for the rest of his service time. He was discharged in February of 1946 and returned home to Connecticut. He worked for a time at Hamilton Standard Propeller and attended college at night. He then began work for the Resolute Insurance Company in Hartford, CT, where he stayed for 35 years, eventually becoming the Vice-President of the Life insurance division. Pease joined the American Legion and the VFW. At the end of the interview Pease shows a collection of items that he brought back from the war.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
