In an alley easy to reach from Pikes Place market, is Post Alley.
The Seattle Gum Wall has been gathering gum since the early 1990s. The tradition began when people waiting for shows at nearby Unexpected Productions would stick gum to the wall and coins to the gum (you won’t see a lot of coins on the wall these days, just gum). Theater workers tried to keep the wall clean, but it didn’t work. The gum stuck—literally.
Up until November 2015, the gum wall had never been cleaned, meaning there was more than 20 years of gum stuck to the brick facade. Yes, it was (and is!) a bit gross. Before that point, there were spots in the wall where the gum was several inches thick!

We live in a world that is increasingly alive with sensors and data. The big data, sensor networks and transparency movements have left us with a glut of potentially useful free data that is lying fallow. How can we use this to improve life, local community, and the world at large? People and devices collect and share data both passively—monitoring environmental change—and actively—explicitly capturing and sharing information, combining data with other information, and using in unexpected ways. Today, we are only starting to understand how best to put this data to work to improve our lives and the world around us. How might data—particularly information that makes civic society run, like bus schedules, election cycles, political information, first-hand reporting, volunteer logistics, and sporting and media events—make for a better and more community-oriented place to live? How might this data help us understand the past and present and predict the future with more precision, and how might an individual’s personal data be used to help filter and make information more relevant in different contexts or situations? What are key problems this data can be used to help solve, what new troubles can we anticipate it creates?

The Climate of the Pacific Northwest - Oceanic or Mediterranean?
The Pacific North West of the United States and Canada. A wonderland of nature. Epic scenery – breath-taking mountains, endless forests, windswept beaches, even volcanoes. And the amazing cities of Vancouver, Seattle and Portland that have influenced the wider world far beyond their isolated patch along the wild Pacific coast.
And… it is somewhat well known for its weather too. Dominated by wet winter westerlies blowing in from the Pacific each year, its exposed coasts feature some of the highest rainfall in the world, and sport temperate rainforests.
In the first of my Climate Casebook series, I look at the curious case of the Pacific NW Climate. Is it Oceanic like Britain? Or is it more like a Mediterranean climate with its dry summers?
The wet winters of the Pacific NW are pretty well known. It’s also fairly well known that Vancouver has the mildest of all winters out of all the Canadian cities. But much fewer people know about the summers in this area. Compared to the dodgy summers of Britain (which also faces west to an ocean at a similar latitude), Pacific NW summers are consistently glorious affairs. Low rainfall and high sunshine hours are the norm.
The Pacific NW climate is actually a hybrid of the classic Mediterranean hot dry summers / wet winters pattern, and the Oceanic mild summers and rain all year round. It has very similar winter and summer temperatures to England, but it has the wet winter and dry summer patterns of California. Oceanic temperatures meets Mediterranean rainfall patterns.
This video shows the beauty of this region and its cities with climate data and animations which fully demonstrate how this region has one of the rarer, more interesting and unexpected climate types in the world.

The Brooks Family Lecture: Bringing America Together
Arthur Brooks addresses the divisions that plague America & finds a set of strategies to help us disagree better, forge a new model of aspirational leadership, & unite the country.
Tuesday, January 29, 2019
5:00pm – 6:30pm
Filene Auditorium, Moore Building
Sponsored by: Rockefeller Center
No matter what our political views, few people believe our country is as united as it should be. Whether in the media, politics, or even in our personal relationships, we all recognize that the country is increasingly defined by a culture of contempt – in which people treat others with whom they disagree as defective, or worthless. Within this distressing reality, however, there lies an opportunity for our nation. Drawing on history, social psychology, behavioral economics, and the counsel of ancient wisdom, Arthur Brooks addresses the divisions that plague America, and finds a set of strategies to help us disagree better, forge a new model of aspirational leadership, and unite the country.
Arthur C. Brooks is president of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), a nonpartisan public policy think tank in Washington, DC, where he is also the Beth and Ravenel Curry Scholar in Free Enterprise. Additionally, Dr. Brooks is a columnist for the Washington Post and host of the podcast “The Arthur Brooks Show.”
At 19, Dr. Brooks left college to work professionally as a classical musician (a period his parents described as his “gap decade”). During this time, he toured the United States with the Annapolis Brass Quintet, recorded albums with jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd and others, and spent several seasons as associate principal French horn with the City Orchestra of Barcelona.
In his late twenties, Dr. Brooks returned to college by correspondence and studied economics, mathematics, and modern languages, eventually earning his B.A. while still working as a musician. He went on to pursue an M.A. in economics at Florida Atlantic University and a Ph.D. in public policy at the RAND Graduate School in Santa Monica, California. His doctoral work focused on applied microeconomics and mathematical modeling. While earning his Ph.D., Dr. Brooks also conducted research for the RAND Corporation on theater-level combat models for the US Air Force.
Upon completion of his doctorate, Dr. Brooks joined the faculty of Syracuse University as a professor of public administration. For ten years, he taught courses in economics and social entrepreneurship and conducted research on happiness and the economics of philanthropy. He was the Louis A. Bantle Professor of Business and Government at Syracuse until assuming the presidency of AEI on January 1, 2009.
Dr. Brooks has published dozens of scholarly articles and 11 books on topics including philanthropy, military operations research, the future of conservatism, and human happiness. His next book, “Love Your Enemies,” will be released in March 2019 (Broadside Books, 2019). Previous books include New York Times bestsellers “The Conservative Heart: How to Build a Fairer, Happier, and More Prosperous America” (Broadside Books, 2015) and “The Road to Freedom: How to Win the Fight for Free Enterprise” (Basic Books, 2012) as well as the textbook “Social Entrepreneurship” (Prentice Hall, 2008).
Dr. Brooks delivers more than 100 speeches annually around the US, Europe, and Asia. He appears regularly on radio and television and is a frequent guest host for programs such as CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” He writes frequently for the Washington Post and publishes featured pieces in outlets such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Commentary Magazine, and Foreign Affairs. In the spring of 2019, he is releasing “The Pursuit,” a feature-length documentary film that explores the themes of poverty alleviation and human happiness both at home and abroad.
In the summer of 2019, he will join the faculty of the Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School.
Pictorial: World's Greatest Landscapes (ft. Range Rover)
New Videos Every Day - Subscribe:
Sixty years after Magnum Photos co-founder George Rodger first drove a Land Rover 8,000 miles through the Sahara desert, the two iconic brands have partnered on the second in a series of photographic works, titled ‘Ultimate Vistas’.
Land Rover worked closely with the world-renowned Magnum Photos agency and acclaimed photographer Michael Christopher Brown to capture and showcase some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. The images reflect the variety of backdrops surrounding Portland and Seattle, from the mountainous peaks of volcanoes to dozens of inlets and islands along the coast, and the brightly-colored Skagit Valley. These unique vantage points were reached using the refinement and capability of a Range Rover.
Since its introduction almost half a century ago, Range Rover has achieved more than one million global sales and sits at the pinnacle of the Land Rover family. The original Classic model made its debut in 1970 and over four generations the luxury SUV has represented the ultimate in design, desirability and capability.
From behind the wheel of the Range Rover, photographer Michael Christopher Brown explored the urban and more remote parts of the Northwest, seeking the best spots from which to shoot beautiful landscapes. Using the exceptional capability of the luxury SUV, Brown drove through snow at the peak of volcanoes, crossed sand dunes to reach coastal vantage points and climbed rocky hillsides for privileged access to incredible vistas.
The trip started in Portland, Ore. and headed north into Washington state, with the crew climbing the active volcanoes of Mount St. Helens, Mount Rainier and Mount Baker. Brown’s crew then stopped in Seattle before venturing along the coast, catching a ferry to the sparsely-inhabited San Juan Islands.
The entire expedition was completed in a production Range Rover 5.0-liter V8 Supercharged which transported Brown, his crew and all their equipment.
Brown’s work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine and National Geographic. His ability to capture insightful images of critical moments with just an iPhone has recently led to his involvement with the social platforms of Time and the New York Times.
An avid traveller, Brown has produced bodies of work about Libya and the Congo, and was the first journalist into Cuba following the lift of U.S. trade embargoes in 2015.
Michael said, “I’m often driving off-road to go mountain biking, snowboarding or hiking and having a vehicle that can handle confidently a variety of road and off-road conditions is key. I always have a plan for a shoot but it’s important to remain open to other possibilities and the Range Rover allowed us to do that. Often the best pictures happen on the way and way back from a shoot. And while on the shoot, sometimes if I just stop what I’m doing and look around there are often unexpected, serendipitous surprises!”

SUMMARY
=======
Presidents of the United States have frequently appeared on U.S. postage stamps since the mid–1800s. The United States Post Office released its first two postage stamps in 1847, featuring George Washington on one, and Benjamin Franklin on the other . The advent of presidents on postage stamps has been definitive to U.S. postage stamp design since the first issues were released and set the precedent that U.S. stamp designs would follow for many generations.
The paper postage stamp itself was born of utility (in England, 1840), as something simple and easy to use was needed to confirm that postage had been paid for an item of mail. People could purchase several stamps at one time and no longer had to make a special trip to pay for postage each time an item was mailed. The postage stamp design was usually printed from a fine engraving and were almost impossible to forge adequately. This is where the appearance of presidents on stamps was introduced. Moreover, the subject theme of a president, along with the honors associated with it, is what began to define the stamp issues in ways that took it beyond the physical postage stamp itself and is why people began to collect them. There exist entire series of stamp issues whose printing was inspired by the subject alone.
The portrayals of Washington and Franklin on U.S. postage are among the most definitive of examples and have appeared on numerous postage stamps. The presidential theme in stamp designs would continue as the decades passed, each period issuing stamps with variations of the same basic presidential-portrait design theme. The portrayals of U.S. presidents on U.S. postage has remained a significant subject and design theme on definitive postage throughout most of U.S. stamp issuance history.Engraved portrayals of U.S. presidents were the only designs found on U.S. postage from 1847 until 1869, with the one exception of Benjamin Franklin, whose historical stature was comparable to that of a president, although his appearance was also an acknowledgement of his role as the first U. S. Postmaster General. During this period, the U.S. Post Office issued various postage stamps bearing the depictions of George Washington foremost, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, and Abraham Lincoln, the last of whom first appeared in 1866, one year after his death. After twenty-two years of issuing stamps with only presidents and Franklin, the Post Office in 1869 issued a series of eleven postage stamps that were generally regarded by the American public as being abruptly different from the previous issues and whose designs were considered at the time to be a break from the tradition of honoring American forefathers on the nation's postage stamps. These new issues had other nonpresidential subjects and a design style that was also different, one issue bearing a horse, another a locomotive, while others were depicted with nonpresidential themes. Washington and Lincoln were to be found only once in this series of eleven stamps, which some considered to be below par in design and image quality. As a result, this pictographic series was met with general disdain and proved so unpopular that the issues were consequently sold for only one year where remaining stocks were pulled from post offices across the United States. In 1870 the Post Office resumed its tradition of printing postage stamps with the portraits of American Presidents and Franklin but now added several other famous Americans, including Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, Alexander Hamilton and General Winfield Scott among other notable Americans. Indeed, the balance had now shifted somewhat; of the ten stamps issued in 1870, only four offered presidential images. Moreover, presidents also appeared on less than half of the denominations in the definitive sets of 1890, 1917, 1954 and 1965, while occupying only a slight major ...

Nina Pham US Nurse ‘Cured of Ebola - Video
Pham, a nurse at a Dallas, Texas hospital that treated the first patient diagnosed with Ebola in the U.S., told reporters and supporters earlier Friday that she is grateful for her recovery. She added that she is mindful of others who are still struggling with the illness, particularly another Dallas nurse, Amber Vinson, who was also infected after caring for Thomas Eric Duncan at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital.
Although I no longer have Ebola, I know it may be a while before I get my strength back, said Pham. She asked for privacy as she recovered further. She planned to head back to Dallas to reunite with her family and her dog Bentley.
Dr. Anthony Fauci of the NIH said Friday that Pham is cured of Ebola. Let's get that clear. He said Pham was not given any experimental drugs while at NIH and said her youth and previous good health may have helped her beat the virus.
Pham had received a transfusion of blood plasma from Ebola survivor Kent Brantly, an American physician who had contracted the virus while treating patients in Liberia.
Health officials say Vinson, the other Dallas nurse who is being treated for Ebola, no longer has detectable levels of the virus, but they say they have no date yet for her to be discharged from Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.
Also Friday, an official with the World Health Organization predicted hundreds of thousands of Ebola vaccine doses will be ready by June.
Marie-Paule Kieny, assistant director-general, said two leading vaccine candidates are already in clinical trials and five more experimental vaccines are being developed for clinical trials next year.
Before the end of first half of 2015 … we could have available a few hundred thousand doses. That could be 200,000 – it could be less or could be more, Kieny said at a news conference after a meeting in Geneva of industry executives, global health experts, drug regulators and funders.
As we accelerate in a matter of weeks a process that typically takes years, we are ensuring that safety remains a top priority, with production speed and capacity a close second, she said. A vaccine is not a magic bullet, but when ready, [vaccines] may be a good part of the effort to turn the tide of this epidemic.
Kieny said safety results of the most advanced clinical trials will be available in December. If they're positive, clinical trials to test the effectiveness of these vaccines will start in the Ebola-affected countries in December, instead of January as had been previously planned, she said.
People on the front lines of the Ebola fight, including health workers, ambulance drivers, contact tracers and people in charge of funerals, will have priority in testing the vaccine, Kieny said.
Donor countries have committed to finance the research, Kieny said. There is a broad understanding that money will not be an issue in developing an Ebola vaccine, Reuters news agency quoted her as saying.
Also Friday, the New York City health commissioner said a third Ebola patient, Dr. Craig Spencer, is in stable condition. On Thursday, Spencer, who recently treated Ebola victims in Guinea, became the first person in New York City to be diagnosed with the virus.
Mayor Bill de Blasio has confirmed Spencer has been placed in isolation at Belleview Hospital Center and the general public has no cause for alarm. Officials are searching for people who may have had contact with Spencer before he was hospitalized.
Ebola is an extremely hard disease to contract, de Blasio said. New Yorkers who have not been exposed to an infected person's bodily fluids are not at all at risk.
Television crews at work in front of the Bellevue Hospital after Dr. Craig Spencer, a resident of New York City and a member of Doctors Without Borders, was recently admitted, New York City,
Spencer on Thursday had notified the medical charity Doctors Without Borders, with whom he’d worked, that he had a high fever and nausea — two symptoms of Ebola.
Officials are looking for anyone who may have had contact with Spencer. He is the fourth person diagnosed with Ebola on U.S. soil, and the first in New York.
In another development Friday, the WHO says Mali's first Ebola case, which was confirmed on Thursday, had contact with many people while traveling through the country by bus. Many warn the new development could represent another major setback to African efforts to contain the disease.
Health Minister Ousmane Kone said on state television the patient is a 2-year-old girl who was brought to a hospital from neighboring Guinea. She had traveled with her grandmother, Kone said, adding, It is possible that these two people arrived at a time when the symptoms were not detectable.

TESLA Autonomy Day Event
TESLA Autonomy Day Event . It’s a big week for Tesla, and it’s kicking off with “Autonomy Investor Day” on April 22. Tesla Autonomy Day is on Mon, April 22nd – watch the event Livestream @11am PDT.
What is Autonomy Investor Day, you ask? The details are vague, but it’s supposed to be a demonstration that explains and showcases Tesla’s autonomous driving technology.
Tesla is holding an event today called ‘Tesla Autonomy Investor Day’ at its headquarters in Palo Alto. Follow along here to get all the details about what is being announced.
The automaker claims to be making a lot of progress in developing its fully self-driving software and it plans a ‘deep dive’ to give everyone a deep dive today:
“Tesla is making significant progress in the development of its autonomous driving software and hardware, including our FSD computer, which is currently in production and which will enable full-self driving via future over-the-air software updates. With a number of very exciting developments coming in the weeks and months ahead, Tesla will host investors on the morning of April 19th at our headquarters in Palo Alto to provide a deep dive into our self-driving technology and road map.”
CEO Elon Musk put it a bit more dramatically when he tweeted earlier this month: “On April 22, Investor Autonomy Day, Tesla will free investors from the tyranny of having to drive their own car.”
Tesla will live-stream the event, which is being held at its headquarters in Palo Alto, at 11 a.m. PT at livestream.tesla.com. You can also watch it on the Tesla YouTube channel.
Later this week, Tesla will report first-quarter earnings (on April 24). The following day is the deadline for Tesla and the Securities and Exchange Commission to report back to a judge on an escalating fight over Musk’s recent tweets, which allegedly violated an agreement between the two parties that was reached last year.
Like so many events surrounding Tesla, there is already drama attached to autonomy day. Tesla was granted a temporary restraining order Friday against a short seller and vocal Twitter critic who recently photographed a Model 3 that was being filmed ahead of the autonomy investor day.
PlainSite.org posted the restraining order, in which Tesla claims Randeep Hothi “stalked, harassed and endangered” employees driving in a Model 3 bearing manufacturer plates and mounted with camera equipment. Tesla claims the individual followed the vehicle for 35 minutes and at one point swerved so close to the vehicle that the side collision avoidance safety feature was triggered.
Tesla vehicles are not considered fully autonomous, or Level 4, a designation by SAE that means the car can handle all aspects of driving in certain conditions without human intervention.
Instead, Tesla vehicles are “Level 2,” a more advanced driver assistance system than most other vehicles on the road today. Musk has promised that the advanced driver assistance capabilities on Tesla vehicles will continue to improve until eventually reaching that full automation high-water mark.
Tesla offers two different advanced driver assistance packages to customers: Autopilot and Full Self-Driving. Autopilot is ADAS that offers a combination of adaptive cruise control and lane steering and is now a standard feature on new cars. The price of vehicles has been adjusted higher to reflect the addition of Autopilot as a standard feature.
Full Self-Driving, or FSD, costs an additional $5,000. (And, to be clear, vehicles are not full self-driving driving.) FSD includes Summon as well as Navigate on Autopilot, an active guidance system that navigates a car from a highway on-ramp to off-ramp, including interchanges and making lane changes. Once drivers enter a destination into the navigation system, they can enable “Navigate on Autopilot” for that trip.
Tesla continues to improve Navigate on Autopilot and the broader FSD system through over-the-air software updates. The company says on its website that FSD will soon be able to recognize and respond to traffic lights and stop signs and automatically drive on city streets.
