Eneabba is a town on the Brand Highway 278 kilometres north of Perth, Western Australia. The area is famous for its spectacular display of wildflowers in the spring. It is also home to the Iluka Resources mineral sands facility.The first European visit to the area was in 1839 by the second disastrous George Grey expedition along the west coast. Grey and his party were forced to walk through the area after their boats were lost. On 11 April, Grey discovered and named the Arrowsmith River, after John Arrowsmith the English cartographer.In 1870 the first settler, William Horsley Rowland, arrived from Greenough. 1. HMAS Sydney II Memorial Geraldton
HMAS Sydney, named after the Australian city of Sydney, was one of three modified Leander-class light cruisers operated by the Royal Australian Navy . Ordered for the Royal Navy as HMS Phaeton, the cruiser was purchased by the Australian government and renamed prior to her 1934 launch. During the early part of her operational history, Sydney helped enforce sanctions during the Abyssinian crisis, and at the start of World War II was assigned to convoy escort and patrol duties in Australian waters. In May 1940, Sydney joined the British Mediterranean Fleet for an eight-month deployment, during which she sank two Italian warships, participated in multiple shore bombardments, and provided support to the Malta Convoys, while receiving minimal damage and no casualties. On her return to Australia...

Coolimba is a tiny fishing settlement north of Leeman opposite the turn off to Eneabba.

The shacks in this video were still there when we visited in 2018.

The number of shacks has gradually been diminishing and the Carnamah Shire website now states that the last shacks have now been removed.

Highway 1 Australia's greatest road trip: Ep 6 Wildflowers

Spotting wildlife requires patience at the best of times, but sometimes, nature doesn't come to the party at all.

When we detoured west off Highway One to reach Kalbarri, 590 km from Perth, in Western Australia, it was to watch the daily pelican feeding that has been taking place on the town's foreshore for decades. But to our surprise and disappointment, we discovered that the pelicans are yet to return from their annual inland migration to breed and are still whooping it up at Lake Eyre.

Instead, it's the prolific wildflowers colouring the vast sand plains above Murchison Gorge in Kalbarri National Park that captivated us. We hiked to Nature's Window, a rock lookout framing a snapshot of the Murchison River that meanders for 80km through the national park, following a deep path cut through startling cliffs of Tumblagooda Sandstone banded with vivid red, yellow and white layers of soft sedimentary rock.

South of Kalbarri, the national park protects a thin strip of coastal cliffs eroded to form natural bridges and amphitheatres, many linked by walking trails. Sticky flies accompany as we walk to lookouts that reward us with sightings of whales breaching and dolphins riding the breakers. SUBSCRIBE: The official channel of Australian Geographic magazine.
