Vancouver Island is in the northeastern Pacific Ocean. It is part of the Canadian province of British Columbia. The island is 460 kilometres in length, 100 kilometres in width at its widest point, and 32,134 km2 in area. It is the largest island on the West Coast of North America. The southern part of Vancouver Island and some of the nearby Gulf Islands are the only parts of British Columbia or Western Canada to lie south of the 49th Parallel.     The Victoria Symphony is a Canadian orchestra based in Victoria, British Columbia. It is considered Vancouver Island's premier active performing arts organization. Currently conducted by Tania Miller—one of North America's first female musical directors—the orchestra consists of 34 full-contract, and 15 part-contract musicians. Each season, the orchestra delivers more than fifty main series programs, as well as a two-week-long summer series. A highlight of the year for many Victorians is the annual Symphony Splash fund-raising concert, held on the Sunday of the August long weekend.
