The small village of Bourtange in the far northeast of the Netherlands is an old fortress.
You can walk over the grassy wall around the village or go into the centre.
The villagers are prepared for daytourist and welcome you with restaurants and shops.
There are no cars allowed, so you can take a stroll at ease.

Pampus Island Amsterdam- Fort & Food Festival

New Amsterdam Travel Video- Pampus is a man-made island that sits in the shallow waters of the Ijsselmeer. A fort was built to protect the city from attacks by sea and is part of the 45 fort defense network that form a 135 km. U- shape around the city. The fort never saw any wartime action and it's defense purpose lessened after the Ijsselmeer was closed off from the North Sea. The fort and island have been recently preserved and renovated and visitors are welcome to explore and learn about the history. This year the Proef Pampus Picnic (Taste Pampus) food festival was organized to create an island party with local food and drink, fort tours and events for children. Ferries leave from both Ijburg and Muiden and it's possible to go there with your own boat too. Fort Pampus Island is another great, interesting place to discover in the Amsterdam area.

Fort Bourtange was built in 1593 under the orders of William the Silent. Its original purpose was to control the only road between Germany and the city of Groningen, which was controlled by the Spaniards during the time of the Eighty Years' War.
