Montfort is a town in the Dutch province of Limburg. Montfort has about 3,000 inhabitants. It lies about 8 km south of Roermond. It received city rights in 1271 and is renowned for the ruins of Castle Montfort, built in the 13th century. Until 1991, Montfort was a separate municipality. It then became part of Posterholt, which was later renamed Ambt Montfort.Since 1 January 2007, Montfort has been part of the municipality of Roerdalen.

The Airborne Museum ‘Hartenstein’ in Oosterbeek, The Netherlands is dedicated to the Battle of Arnhem in which the Allied Forces attempted to form a bridgehead on the northern banks of the Rhine river in September 1944. Hartenstein served as the headquarters of the British 1st Airborne Division. In the museum an extensive and diverse collection is displayed consisting of original weaponry, genuine uniforms and equipment used in the battle. The numerous photos and films on display provide a realistic picture which is enhanced by interviews with Allied soldiers. In addition the museum has an award-winning Airborne Experience exhibition, that depicts the area around Arnhem and Oosterbeek during the battle. The museum also provides German and civilian perspectives.

France’s Forgotten Castle

Nestled in the countryside sits an abandoned castle that was once the hub of French aristocratic parties. The Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers was first built in the 14th century as a stronghold for French nobles. In the Middle Ages, it was conquered by the British and devastated during the French Revolution, only to be eventually restored by relative of Napoleon III. Unfortunately, a violent fire in 1932 once again left the Château in ruins. While its fate remains uncertain, many efforts are being made to return the historic castle to its former glory.
