The northernmost county of England, it borders Cumbria to the west, County Durham and Tyne and Wear to the south and the Scottish Borders to the north.     Kielder Water is a large man-made reservoir in Northumberland in North East England. It is the largest artificial lake in the United Kingdom by capacity of water and it is surrounded by Kielder Forest, the biggest man-made woodland in Europe. The scheme was planned in the late 1960s to satisfy an expected rise in demand for water to support a booming UK industrial economy. Kielder Water is owned by Northumbrian Water, and holds 200 billion litres , making it the largest artificial reservoir in the UK by capacity . It has a 27.5-mile shoreline, and is 24.6 miles from the sea.

    Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve a 3,541-hectare UK national nature reserve, was founded to help safeguard the internationally important wintering bird populations. Six internationally important species of wildfowl and wading birds winter here. For the pale-bellied brent geese from Svalbard, this is their only regular wintering place in all of the United Kingdom. Pinkfooted and greylag geese, wigeons, grey plovers and bar-tailed godwits are the other visitors.

    The College Valley is one of five cuttings into the Cheviot Hills. The valley is owned by College Valley Estates which in turn is funded by a trust created by Sir James Knott MP. The valley is spectacularly beautiful and affords a serenely satisfying ascent of the Cheviot - 815 metres - the highest peak in the area. The Estate covers approximately 12,000 acres and is now managed by a Board of Directors whose duty is to manage it in a way that increases its value as an environmental, social and economic place of excellence.
