Trento is a city in the Trentino–Alto Adige region of northern Italy. It’s known for the Buonconsiglio Castle, home to late-medieval fresco cycles. Trento Cathedral, featuring a rose window and a baroque chapel, sits on Piazza Duomo. Also on the square is Casa Cazuffi-Rella, a Renaissance building with a frescoed facade. Southwest, MUSE is a science and natural history museum with high-tech exhibits.
The capital of Trentino is quietly confident, liberal and easy to like. Bicycles glide along spotless streets fanning out from the atmospheric, intimate Piazza del Duomo, students clink spritzes by Renaissance fountains and a dozen historical eras intermingle seamlessly among stone castles, shady porticoes and the city's signature medieval frescoes. While there's no doubt you're in Italy, Trento does have its share of Austrian influence: apple strudel is ubiquitous and beer halls not uncommon. Set in a wide glacial valley guarded by the crenellated peaks of the Brenta Dolomites, amid a patchwork of vineyards and apple orchards, Trento is a perfect jumping-off point for hiking, skiing or wine tasting. And road cycling is huge: 400km of paved cycling paths fan out from here. Those with an interest in early-modern history will also find Trento fascinating: the Council of Trent convened here in the 16th century, during the tumultuous years of the Counter-Reformation, dishing out far-reaching condemnations to uppity Protestants.

Trento is a city in the northern regions of Italy that sits on the River Adige and is nestled within the Adige River Valley. As the capital of the Trentino region, the city has a population of 117,000 and is considered to be one of the richest cities of the country. Furthermore, citizens here enjoy a high quality of life and standard of living.
During ancient history, Trento was occupied by the Etruscans, Gauls and Romans. Once the Roman Empire had fallen, the city became part of the Lombard Empire and also came under the rule of the Habsburgs during the Middle Ages. Today, the city has a thriving economy and serves as a main communication hub in Northern Italy.
Due to its extensive history and involvement with various Empires and rulers, Trento has a plethora of beautiful historical structures such as the Duomo and Castello del Buonocnsiglio. Furthermore, the city has a host of fine museums and galleries, and some great shopping opportunities. Alternatively, due to its location in the Northern Alps, Trento lies in close proximity to many high-quality ski resorts for those who are more adventurous.
Located in the heart of the old town of Trento, this Cathedral is the main religious structure in the city and was originally the seat of the Bishop of Trento until 1802. Constructed in the 11th century, this old building has been renovated and remodelled over the years and during the 14th century had a series of stunning Renaissance frescos added to its interior.
Castello del Buonconsiglio stunning castle complex once served as the home of the prince-bishops that ruled over Trento and the surrounding region during the 13th century. Due to its immense age, the castle has several different design elements that have been added at various stages throughout its history.
Leading directly from the Piazza del Duomo, the Via Belenzani is one of the central streets in the old town and features some fine architecture and selection of shops and restaurants. Contained on this street is a selection of historical buildings that are covered with beautiful coloured frescos dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries.
Simply known as the museum of Science, the MUSE complex is a wonderful building and a great attraction for all the family. Located on the banks of the River Adige, this museum can be reached from the Piazza del Duomo on foot in roughly 20 minutes. Sometimes overshadowed by the Duomo, the Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore is nonetheless a beautiful building and worthy of a visit in its own right.
Another fantastic museum in the region surrounding Trento, the Museum of Aeronautics is located at the Trento international airport. To the north west of Trento is the immense Mount Paganella. Trento lies approximately 1 hour from the northern edge of the immense Lake Garda.

Trento is an Italian city located in the Adige River valley in Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol. It is the capital of the region and of the Autonomous Province of Trento.
In the English-speaking world, the city is most notable as the location of the Council of Trent. Trento is a major educational, scientific, financial and political centre in Trentino Alto-Adige and Northern Italy in general. The University of Trento ranks highly (9th) out of Italy's top 30 colleges, and amongst the 500 best in the world, coming 407th.[1] The city contains a picturesque Medieval and Renaissance historic centre, with ancient buildings such as Trento Cathedral and the Castello del Buonconsiglio.

Merano is an Alpine town in Italy’s South Tyrol region. It’s known for its spas and art nouveau buildings. Sissi’s Path leads to the Trauttmansdorff Castle, with its terraced gardens. The castle also encompasses Touriseum, an interactive museum, with exhibits about Alpine tourism. At the foot of the Ifinger Mountain, in the northeast, is Merano 2000, a ski area with slopes and a snow park, plus summer hiking.
With its leafy boulevards, birdsong, oleanders and cacti, Merano feels like you've stumbled into a valley Shangri-La. Long lauded for its sunny microclimate, this poignantly pretty town (and one-time Tyrolean capital) was a Habsburg-era spa and the hot destination of its day, favoured by the Austrian royals plus Freud, Kafka and Pound. The Jugendstil (art nouveau) villas, recuperative walks and the grand riverside Kurhaus fan out from its intact medieval core.
The city's therapeutic traditions have served it well in the new millennium, with spa hotels drawing a new generation of health-conscious visitors and a booming organics movement in the surrounding valleys. German is spoken almost exclusively here, sausage and beer stalls dot the streets and an annual open-air play celebrates Napoleonic-era Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer. Despite the palm trees, you're far closer to Vienna than Rome. Apart from its old-fashioned charms, it also makes an urban base for skiing or hiking nearby Merano 2000.
Merano is a town and comune in South Tyrol, northern Italy. Generally best known for its spa resorts, it is located within a basin, surrounded by mountains standing up to 3,335 metres (10,942 feet) above sea level, at the entrance to the Passeier Valley and the Vinschgau. In the past, the town has been a popular place of residence for several scientists, literary people, and artists, including Franz Kafka, Ezra Pound, Paul Lazarsfeld, and also Empress Elisabeth of Austria, who appreciated its mild climate.
Among the town's landmarks are the medieval city gates such as the Vinschgauer Tor, Passeirer Tor, and the Bozener Tor. Also belonging to the fortifications is the medieval Ortenstein tower, popularly called Pulverturm (lit. powder tower). The main churches are the Gothic St. Nicholas' Church and the St. Barbara's Chapel, both dating to the 15th century. Also dating to this period is the Princely Castle (Landesfürstliche Burg), which was a residence of Archduke Sigismund of Austria. The Steinerner Steg stone bridge crosses the Passer river and dates to the 17th century.
The town saw further development as it became increasingly popular as a spa resort, especially after Empress Elisabeth of Austria started visiting. Dating from the 19th century are civic theatre, the Kurhaus and the Empress Elisabeth Park. Also famous are the arched Wandelhalle promenades along the river. After the annexation of the town to Italy in 1919, the Fascist authorities constructed the new town hall in the 1920s. Outside the town is Trauttmansdorff Castle and its gardens. Also located there is the Museum of Tourism, which was opened in the spring of 2003 and shows the historical development of tourism in the province. Tirol Castle is also close-by.
Merano is a popular tourist destination especially for Germans and Italians. In summer, there are concerts on the promenade almost daily, and there are fine walks around the town and in the surrounding hills, not least Meran 2000, where there is also skiing in winter.The town is reachable with the railway Bolzano-Merano, which continues to the Vinschgau Railway Merano-Malles.

Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol[3] (Italian: Trentino-Alto Adige, pronounced [trenˈtiːno ˈalto ˈaːdidʒe]; German: Trentino-Südtirol;[4] Ladin: 'Trentin-Südtirol';[5] Austro-Bavarian: Trentino-Sidtiroul), is an autonomous region in Northern Italy. It consists of two provinces: Trento and Bolzano-Bozen. The region was part of Austria-Hungary and its predecessors, the Austrian Empire and the Holy Roman Empire from the 8th century until its annexation by Italy in 1919. Together with the Austrian state of Tyrol it is represented by the Euroregion Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino.
In English, the region is also known as Trentino-South Tyrol[6] or by its Italian name Trentino-Alto Adige.[7]

The region is bordered by Tyrol (Austria) to the north, by Graubünden (Switzerland) to the north-west and by the Italian regions of Lombardy and Veneto to the west and south, respectively. It covers 13,607 km² (5,253 sq mi). It is extremely mountainous, covering a large part of the Dolomites and the southern Alps.
The Autonomous Province of Bolzano has an area of 7,400 km2, all of it mountainous land and covered by vast forests. In Italy, the province borders on Lombardy in the west, Trento in the south and Veneto in the east. The climate is of the continental type, owing to the influence of the many mountain ranges which stand at well over 3,000 metres above sea-level and the wide valleys through which flow the main river, the Adige, from north to south and its numerous tributaries. In the city of Bolzano, capital of the province, the average air temperature stands at 12.2 °C (54 °F) and the average rainfall at 717.7 mm. The lowest pass across the Alps, the Brenner Pass, is located at the far north of the region on the border with Austria.[8]
The Autonomous Province of Trento has an area of 6,207 km2, most of it mountainous land (20% is over 2,000 m (6,561.68 ft) and 70% over 1,000 m) and covered by vast forests (50% of the territory). The climate is various through the province, from an alpine climate to subcontinental one, with warm and variable summers and cold and quite snowy winters. The region has always been a favourite destination for tourists, both in winter for skiing in the high mountains and in summer to visit the wide valleys and many lakes (the largest being Lake Garda) can be found.[9]

The region of current Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol was conquered by the Romans in 15 BC. After the end of the Western Roman Empire, it was divided between the invading German tribes in the Lombard Duchy of Tridentum (today's Province of Trento), the Alamannic Vinschgau and the Bavarians taking the remaining part. After the creation of the Kingdom of Italy under Charlemagne, the Marquisate of Verona included the areas south of Bolzano, while the Duchy of Bavaria received the remaining part.[10]
From the 11th century onwards, part of the region was governed by the prince-bishops of Trento and Brixen, to whom the Holy Roman Emperors had given extensive temporal powers over their bishoprics. The rest was part of the County of Tyrol and County of Görz, which controlled the Pustertal: in 1363 its last titular, Margarete, Countess of Tyrol ceded it to the House of Habsburg. The regions north of Salorno were largely Germanized in the early Middle Ages, and important German poets like Oswald von Wolkenstein were born and lived in the southern part of Tyrol.
