Red Feather Lakes is a census-designated place in Larimer County, Colorado, United States. The population was 525 at the 2000 census. The Red Feather Lakes Post Office has the ZIP Code 80545. Located in the Rocky Mountains northwest of Fort Collins, this is a rustic mountain village surrounded by the Roosevelt National Forest. Sprague Lake is a scenic lake in Rocky Mountain National Park, located on the south side of Glacier Creek, about two miles south of the Hollowell turnoff. The half-mile walk around the lake is wheelchair accessible and features boardwalks and bridges with views of Flattop Mountain and Hallet Peak. The lake provides a pleasant area for brookie fishing.The area is named after Abner Sprague, who started a homestead there in 1874. Later, he opened a lodge for dude ranching, hunting, and fishing. A beautiful drive through the Bellaire Lake Campground. There are spacious sites with some sites having trees. Many of the trees here were weakened by beetle kill and blown down by a storms. We enjoy this area, and the nearby National Forest. Holiday weekends here can be a bit crowded.

Hiking Colorado: Lake Agnes

Two hours west of Fort Collins, in the CO State Park State Forest is a gem of a hike: Lake Agnes. This hike is less than 2 miles round-trip, and offers a very high reward for minimal effort. A day pass is required; $7 as of October 2015.

Helen Hunt Falls - In A Colorado Minute (287)

Helen Hunt Falls can be found just south of Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs in the North Cheyenne Cañon Park. It's free to enter and was recommended to us on our Manitou Springs Road Trip over the much hyped Seven Falls. I'll still have to check that one out and compare.

The drive through Cheyenne Cañon to the waterfalls is lovely with many opportunities to stop along the Cheyenne Creek. Once you arrive at the Helen Hunt Falls parking lot, you can see the Helen Hunt waterfall, and the footbridge crossing it, right away. After a short but steep hike, you arrive at the top of Silver Cascade Falls with the great view of the foothills, valley and city below as seen in the video.

The waterfall is not named after the actress Helen Hunt, but Helen Maria Hunt Jackson, a 19th century poet, writer and activist for Native American rights.

Carter Lake, Colorado. Starcraft Extreme

In all our 46 native years,We have never camped at nearby Carter lake. It's just 30 min. drive from home. We made reservations a few days before and we're able to score site #17 at South Shore Campground right on the water, we stayed 3 nights.
The campground was full of happy campers. The facilities were clean and well kept, all run by Larimer county. It is now considered peak season. $25/ night with electric only. There is a nearby dump station. You will also need a daily $7 pass in addition to your Camping fees.
We would definitely stay here again.

Watson Lake - In A Colorado Minute (Week 329)

- - Watson Lake is an almost hidden gem in the town of Bellvue, a few miles north-west of Fort Collins, Colorado. The 44-acre Watson Lake State Wildlife Area doesn't just feature the lake. It also offers access to the Cache la Poudre River.

I consider Watson Lake a hidden gem because it can't be seen from the road and it's not overcrowded on summer weekends. Or at least, it doesn't seem overcrowded. When I filmed this lake and the river on Sunday, there were actually quite a few people there fishing or having picnics at one of the many picnic areas. But because you are not allowed to put a boat in the water and because of the greenery surrounding the lake, you don't usually see most of the other visitors.

Of course, you can see all kinds of birds around the lake. But if you're really lucky, you get to see the Golden Eagles that live on Bellvue Dome aka Goat Hill, the rock formation to the east of Watson Lake and the Poudre River. While I've seen the eagles before, I didn't get to capture them with my camera on this outing.

There is a trail around most of the lake, except a section on the west side.

I couldn't find much information about the history of Watson Lake, but according to this picture, Watson Lake appears to be man-made or at least man-modified.

Watson Lake State Wildlife Area is located off County Road 52E (Rist Canyon Road). I highly recommend a drive through Rist Canyon - to or from Poudre Canyon Road, depending on the direction you're coming from.

Horsetooth Inn and RV Park near Fort Collins Colorado offers full hookup RV sites (all backins) with views looking out over the Horsetooth Reservoir. Mostly long term guests a few short term sites may be available. Gravel roads and parking area the park is condensed and can be a bit tight to back in when everyone is around (weekends/ evenings). Just across the street is the Horsetooth County Park campgrounds and the lake. A small playground is available along with access to miles of trails around the lake. Sites are in an open setting.
