The Appalachian Trail from Carvers Gap, Roan Mountain. TN.
Camping at Roan Mt State park, just a few miles and several thousand ft up. Fantastic Drive, Great Hike on this part of the Appalachian Trail. But go early, it gets crowded.

AT Thru Hike Erwin to Roan Mt TN
Grandfather Mountain via Profile Trail, NC
A difficult, exciting, exhilarating, rocky, tiring, fun hike on my 30th birthday at one of my favorite places in North Carolina, Grandfather Mountain. I used the steep, rocky Profile Trail to access the crest where I first jaunted up to Calloway Peak, the highest peak on the mountain massif. I also checked out the Watauga View briefly and also dropped down to the airplane crash site. The next part is some of the most exciting ridgeline scrambles anywhere in the Southeast as the trail follows bare rock cliffs, heath and krummholz on its way over the magnificent summits of Attic Window Peak and MacRae Peak. The swinging bridge and Linville Peak are kind of a let down, mainly because of the crowds, but at least you get to return the same way! It took a little over 8 hours to hike 11.4 miles. I stopped a lot but it is difficult and has given me a bout of plantar fasciitis in the days after.

Three Top Mountain, NC
My friend Ryan and I hiked to Three Top Mountain recently, a great peak in the Amphibolite Mountains of northwestern NC. Starting at the Three Top Game Land parking area, the gated forest road to Huckleberry Rock is steep, climbing ~1,200 feet in ~1.5 miles. Huckleberry Rock, the 2nd tallest peak on Three Top Mt at 5,035 feet, is a large, flat series of outcroppings that are easy to explore. From there we headed back down the trail and took a faint side path following the ridgeline southwest towards Big Rock. As you get closer the path fades in and out, there are a lot of thorns and some bushwhacking as it climbs to the summit. It tops out at Big Rock, the highest peak on Three Top Mt at 5,044 feet. The cliffs drop sharply to a knife-edge row of rocks leading down and up to Peak 4880'. From both peaks you can see The Peak, Elk Knob, and Snake Mt to the southwest across the Long Hope Creek Gorge - all had lingering snow from a few days prior. Grandfather Mt stuck out above Long Hope Mt to the south, left of Elk Knob. Bluff Mt was immediately across the valley southeast, with Phoenix Mt and Mt. Jefferson northeast and east. The Iron Mountains were north beyond the North Fork New River. The smaller bald peaks on the left were Stone Mt and Pond Mt, with Whitetop Mt and Mt. Rogers the tallest peaks due north.
Hike was 4.7 miles in 3 hours and 10 minutes.

Took a short weekend trip to two beautiful waterfalls in Central Tennessee. Foster Falls (featured in the beginning) was a 60 foot drop into deep water. Greeter Falls was much more shallow, but had a small 15 foot ledge perfect for diving and lighter jumping. Would have done more rock climbing, but it was a pretty rainy weekend. Everything was filmed with one GoPro HD Hero 2.
