Places to see in ( New York - USA ) Belvedere Castle
Places to see in ( New York - USA ) Belvedere Castle
Belvedere Castle is a folly in Central Park in Manhattan, New York City. It contains exhibit rooms and an observation deck, and since 1919, the folly has also been the location of the official Central Park weather station. Belvedere Castle was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in the late 19th century.
An architectural hybrid of Gothic and Romanesque styles, Vaux's design called for a Manhattan schist and granite structure with a corner tower with conical cap, with the existing lookout over parapet walls between them. To reduce costs it was revised in November 1870 and completed under the Tammany Hall regime as an open painted-wood pavilion. Belvedere means beautiful view or panoramic view in Italian.
Belvedere Castle was originally built as a shell with open doorway and window openings. Starting in 1919, it housed the New York Meteorological Observatory, which had been taken over by the United States Weather Bureau in 1912. The current weather station in Central Park, an Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS), is located immediately south of the castle, though wind equipment is still located on the main tower. The two fanciful wooden pavilions deteriorated without painting and upkeep and were removed before 1900.
The Castle serves now as a visitor center and gift shop. Free family and community programs hosted at Belvedere Castle include birding and other Central Park Conservancy Discovery Programs for families as well as a variety of history and natural history programs led by NYC Urban Park Rangers, including stargazing/astronomy and wildlife-education events.
The Central Park Conservancy proposes to renovate Belvedere Castle and reconstruct the access path from the East Drive to ADA standards. The proposed access path − actually an elevated ramp with parapets − has been criticized as creating an unnecessary wall in a naturalistic park. Other plans include replacing existing doors and windows with double paned glass. When it was last renovated in 1983, the original turret was replaced, the pavilions were rebuilt, and the castle was converted into a visitor center.

Lyndhurst Mansion and Other Castles of New York
When you think castle you probably think medieval times or maybe you think Belvedere Castle in Central Park. But a lot of majestic castles are scattered throughout New York State.
North of New York City is Bannerman Castle. Its namesake was Irishman Francis Bannerman, who owned an ammunitions company in Brooklyn. He bought the island in 1901 and had the castle built to store military surplus. The state purchased the island in 1967. After a fire destroyed most of the castle in 1969, it became off-limits to the public. (The island eventually became part of Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve.)
In the Great Lakes region, you'll find Boldt Castle. George Boldt, a former manager of the Waldorf-Astoria, commissioned this castle in 1900. It was once one of the largest private homes in the United States. Today, it is a tourist attraction.
Hundreds of years ago, a castle was a structure that had to be fortified from attack. But after arriving at Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown, I learned that times have changed.
Lyndhurst was built in 1838. It was designed by architect Alexander Jackson Davis, the same man who designed Federal Hall on Wall Street.
The grand entryway is just a hint of what is inside. One of the first rooms you enter is a parlor where guests gathered before dinner. This was a room designed for conversation.
On our way to the paintings gallery, we passed a bathroom and the duchess's room complete with vintage Louis Vuitton trunk. The gallery made it clear that owner Jay Gould loved collecting fine art.
Almost 200 years after the gothic revival home was built, Lyndhurst remains a crown jewel on the shore of the Hudson River.

What To See In New York City - Belvedere Castle Is A Fun Free Place To Visit In Central Park
Belvedere Castle in Central Park is one of the fun, free places to go and visit in New York City. It's not one of New York's better-known attractions, but it's geographically located near the center of the Park and offers a good view of the Great Lawn area along with vistas of the buildings along both Central Park West and Fifth Avenue. The skyline of downtown Manhattan is also clearly visible as you look south from one of the three stories that offer viewing plazas. Belvedere provides the best and highest views of the Park and its cityscape. It's fitting, considering its name translates to beautiful view in Italian.
Belvedere Castle is easily accessible from either side of the Park at 79th Street. It's sits just above the Turtle Pond, where nature lovers often gather to view dozens of turtles that reside in their natural pond habitat (when weather allows, of course).
According to Belvedere Castle's official website
Belvedere Castle was a Victorian folly. Calvert Vaux, co-designer of Central Park, created the miniature castle in 1869 as one of its many whimsical structures intended as a lookout to the reservoir to the north (now the Great Lawn) and the Ramble to the south.
After decades of deterioration, the Central Park Conservancy renovated and reopened the castle in 1983...
If you're planning to go sightseeing in New York City soon,Belvedere Castle in Central Park should definitely be on your list of what to do and places to see.

Bird Whisperer (Belvedere Castle at Central Park, New York City)
My nephew, Trey, and I went birding last Saturday at Central Park. Trey LOVES birds. I had no idea Central Park had so many species of birds! We had a fantastic time.
The Central Park Conservancy has Discovery Kit backpacks available to borrow free of charge at Belvedere Castle on an ongoing, year-round basis. Each one contains binoculars, a guidebook, maps and sketching materials. Valid picture identification is required, and an adult must accompany children under 12 years of age. Discovery Kits are available from 10:00 am - 3:30 pm (and must be returned by 4:30 pm) during open days (Tuesday-Sunday or Wednesday-Sunday seasonally). Call 212-772-0210 for more information.
Must-have iPhone app for the birder: Audubon Birds
Approximately 230 different species of birds can be found in Central Park during the year. Most birds are more active in the early morning and late afternoon, although there will be some activity throughout the day. Some birds live in Central Park all year long, while others visit only at certain times of the year. Central Park has become an important stopover for several species to rest and feed during fall and spring migrations. In late spring and summer, many birds in Central Park build their nests, lay eggs and raise their young. Watch for young birds learning to fly.

NEW YORK CITY | cinematic travel video and sightseeing trip of NYC
Our cinematic travel video of our New York City (NYC) trip.
We really enjoyed climbing the steep spiral staircase to the crown of the Statue of Liberty. The entire Liberty Island was a great experience. We also caught the live Broadway show Finding Neverland, which was a genuine delight. The observatory at One World Trade Center gave us breathtaking views of Manhattan and beyond. In Central Park, our favorite locations included the Mall, Strawberry Fields (John Lennon Memorial), the Conservatory Garden, and Belvedere Castle.

The local bakeries are awesome! Take the metro subway around Manhattan to avoid the traffic and general craziness on the streets. We stumbled upon a free outdoor concert at Bryant Park, which also has a carousel and fresh Belgian wafel vendor. We'd also highly recommend a sunset harbor dinner cruise on Spirit Cruises, and dinner at ONE Dine at the One World Observatory.
Footage includes Bryant Park, Lower Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Corner Bagel Shop, Macy's Department Store, Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, Imagine: the John Lennon Memorial, the Hudson River from One World Trade Center, the Empire State Building, geese, squirrels, a horse-drawn carriage, bubble making, The Immigrants monument in Battery Park, Chinese erhu player, The American Immigrant Wall of Honor at Ellis Island, Times Square, Yankee Stadium, and the 9/11 Memorial.

10 | Top | Tourist Attractions | In | New York | City
The largest and most populated city in the USA, New York City is often called the “city that never sleeps” because it is constantly buzzing with activity. The metropolis is the nexus of culture, art, architecture, history and entertainment. With so much to see and do in the city, it can be overwhelming to a New York novice. This comprehensive list outlines the top tourist attractions in New York City that travelers won’t find anywhere else
September 11 Memorial.
The National September 11 Memorial has been constructed in honor to those who were killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The names of those who died are engraved in two bronze panels flanking the Memorial pools.
High Line.
he High Line is a public park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above Manhattan’s West Side. The park is maintained and operated by Friends of the High Line, which fought for the preservation and transformation of the rail line into green space. Every month there are new fun and diverse activities for visitors.
Grand Central Terminal.
Grand Central Terminal has been dubbed the “world’s loveliest station” and is one of the top tourist attractions in New York City. The cavernous Main Concourse is home to the impressive clock made of pearly opal glass. Visitors are also treated to the elaborate astronomical ceiling decorations originally conceived in 1912.
Rockefeller Center.
A tour of Rockefeller Center, a complex of 19 buildings built by the Rockefeller family, offers a behind-the-scenes look at some of New York City’s greatest treasures. These buildings have housed many major corporations over the years including General Electric and are home to the NBC studios. At 70 stories high, the Top of the Rock observation deck gives visitors an unobstructed 360 degree views of New York City.
Fifth Avenue.
Ranked as one of the most expensive shopping streets in the world, Fifth Avenue is a prime destination for visitors with a taste for luxury. The section of Fifth that crosses Midtown Manhattan between 49th and 60th Streets is lined with high-end shops including designer showrooms and prestigious department stores.
Brooklyn Bridge.
The Brooklyn Bridge, built between 1869 and 1883, is one of the oldest and most recognizable suspension bridges in the world. It spans 5,989 feet and connects Manhattan to Brooklyn across the East River. More than 120,000 vehicles, 4,000 pedestrians and 2,600 bicyclists cross the bridge every day. Visitors to the bridge can walk, drive, or bike across this famous New York City landmark.
Times Square.
With over 39 million visitors annually, Times Square is the world’s most visited tourist attraction. The bright lights and big city feel of this commercial intersection have iconified this spot as “The Crossroad of the World.” Today, Times Square is a major center of the world’s entertainment industry.
Central Park.
Located in the center of Manhattan, Central Park is a sprawling 840 acres and home to Belvedere Castle, the Central Park Zoo among many other attractions. For naturalists looking to take a break from the big city, relaxing in the Great Lawn or a walk along the extensive paths throughout the park can offer a much needed respite.
Empire State Building.
The iconic Empire State Building soars over a quarter of a mile above Manhattan and offers expansive views to the millions of visitors it attracts every year. On a clear day, visitors can see New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. There are two observations decks in the tower, on the 86th floor and 102nd floor.
Statue of Liberty.
The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the United States, has welcomed new arrivals to the shores of America for over a hundred years. Lady Liberty on her pedestal stands at an impressive 93 meters (305 feet), which visitors can climb for views of Brooklyn and Gustave Eiffel’s supportive framework.

Bike Ride Through Central Park - Sail the Park - Times Square - New York City, New York
On our first day in New York City we took a bike tour of Central Park! This was a great way to see the park with our kids, and get a history of the area. We explored Central Park's pond, Gapstow Bridge, Bethesda Terrace and fountain, saw rowers on Central Park's lake, Belvedere Castle, Turtle Pond, and more! There is also a small amusement park and zoo in Central Park. After our bike tour and a slice of New York style pizza, we headed back in to the park to let the kids race sailboats around the pond with Sail the Park. It was a fabulous day and we walked an all time record number of steps!
