What Does the Church Incorrectly Assume About New York City’s Christians?
At eight million people, New York City is the United States’ largest city. But do cultural stereotypes of this metropolitan area accurately represent the state of Christianity? How does the church practice, worship, and work in one of the most diverse collection of neighborhoods in the entire world?

Historic Elmira, Inc. and Near Westside Neighborhood Association Announce Grant Award
Secures NYS funding for former Ritz Carriage House stabilization
Historic Elmira, Inc. and Near Westside Neighborhood Association (NWNA) of Elmira are pleased to acknowledge that they were successful in obtaining a $333,910 grant from the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council and New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation that will facilitate the stabilization of the Richardson-Kennedy House at 359 West Church Street, Elmira. This is a vital step in preparing the property to make it marketable to a developer.
Although NWNA is the property owner and direct grant recipient, the grant request and making the case for the project was a shared task involving both organizations. Historic Elmira also committed to provide the required 25% match for the grant through fundraising.
“A great big thank you goes out from us to all of those who sent letters of support for this project; Preservation League of New York State, City of Elmira Community Development, City of Elmira Historic Preservation Commission, Southern Tier Economic Growth, Chemung County Department of Aging, residents and businesses in the Near Westside Historic District,” states Kaye Newbury, President of Historic Elmira. “It's a truly collaborative project that benefits Elmira's economy, increases neighborhood safety, and is totally in keeping with the historic architectural character of the Near Westside. We've been steadfast in our efforts and I'm delighted that we've succeeded in bringing this grant money to our community.”
“I think the collaborative nature of this grant and its benefit to the Near Westside neighborhood and larger community clearly shows the benefits of persistence and partnering with the right team,” states Beth Farr, Executive Director of NWNA. “We are looking forward to receiving follow up from the state regarding a timeline.”
The badly damaged Richardson-Kennedy House has history dating back to the late 1800’s and was owned over the years by many well-known people in Elmira. In 2010 the Elmira City Council voted to hand over the building at 359 West Church Street to the NWNA. Historic Elmira shares responsibility for its care and redevelopment.
At a ceremony last Thursday in Albany, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state lawmakers announced more than $709 million in state funding to the 10 regions for round four. For the third consecutive year, the Southern Tier was named a top performer in the 10-region battle for state grants, tax credits and bonds.
The Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council’s award of nearly $81 million includes $38 million for 91 projects, $35 million in economic development financing and almost $8 million in Excelsior Jobs Program tax credits. Each region has a panel of college presidents, lawmakers, and business and labor leaders that come up with a development plan and highlight priority projects, battling for funding with the other councils.
Unpacking Atheism [MIRROR]

Lee Strobel, Mark Mittelberg and William Lane Craig are hosting a seminar being broadcast simultaneously to participating churches around the US the evening of October 14th, 2012 in how to deal with the rise of atheism. They are promising to unpack the central claims made by those who deny God's existence and discuss how we can best answer them. This should be very interesting because atheists don't make any claims other than: Your evidence for god is lacking, therefore I don't believe in it. Not sure how they can answer that since they already tried and failed. At any rate, I think it would be a good idea if atheists attended this event in order to find out what is being said about our position and how these fundamentalist evangelicals are preparing themselves to confront us. Hope you can attend and help get the word out!

Inside the World of Jehovah's Witnesses
Jehovah's Witnesses have a long history of being persecuted around the world. Their activities are banned or restricted in several countries. They are considered an extremist organization in Russia, while their members are imprisoned in South Korea and Eritrea. Even near their main headquarters and publishing house in New York state, Jehovah's Witnesses lead a somewhat secluded life. VOA's Anush Avetisyan has the story.

Elevator at 42 West 18th Street, New York, NY, Lobby to 6th Floor
From the cutting room floor, an incomplete elevator ride on the elevator at the headquarters of Adorama Rentals. First, I love the aperture painting on the hoistway doors - it immediately made me think of Portal. I was there returning a rental camera for another project hence the camera shake as I grab the stuff to board the elevator. I love the non-stop button for attendant mode! The relays clicked loudly in the position indicator. There was a ridiculously looking 1990s style home telephone slapped on the wall which I guess was the emergency phone. The fire service may have actually been a primitive form of Phase II, it only had on, not hold. Besides the fire service switch, it looked like all the floors and functions on the COP were controlled by GAL/Medeco R63C key switches - fancy!

Melville Homes for Sale - 4 BR Colonial for sale in Villages at Melville, New York
Melville Homes for Sale - - Check out this 4 bedroom colonial located in the Villages at Huntington, a private, gated community in Melville, NY. This home is listed for sale with Hector Gavilla from LIP Realty (631) 482-7052. It is located in the Half Hollow Hills School District #5. The elementary school is Sunquam. Middle School is West Hollow. The High School is Half Hollow Hills East.
Melville is a hamlet and is part of the town of Huntington in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York, in the United States.
It is directly east of Nassau County border. The Long Island Expressway (LIE) and Northern State Parkway, two of the country's busiest highways and major points of entry in and out of New York City, pass through Melville. Melville is located immediately off of Exit 49 of the LIE. New York State Route 110 runs through the center of Melville.
The area was known to the native Americans as Sunsquams. In the 17th century it was known as Samuel Ketcham's Valley, named for a local resident. Afterwards it was known as Sweet Hollow. This name was replaced by Melville in school records in 1854. There is some debate as to the origin of the Melville name. It may be derived from the Latin for honey. (the area had an abundance of honey bees and this may have also been the origin of the previous Sweet Hollow name). It should also be noted that the author Herman Melville was being published around this time.
A Presbyterian church was built in Melville in 1829 at the northeast corner of Old Country and Sweet Hollow Roads. In 1977 the church was moved 1-mile (1.6 km) to the West. The church was in continuous use until 1930. It reopened in 1944 for the funeral of Edward Baylis and has been in use since then.
In 1909 a trolley line to Huntington was established. This was an extension of the Huntington Trolley Spur and went as far south as Amityville and had a connection to Babylon. There were six fare zones, one of which was the Duryea Farm at Melville. The line was shut down a decade later after farmers complained that noise from the trolley frightened their animals. Buses provided transportation after the trolley line closed. The growing use of private cars also reduced demand for the trolley line.
In May of 2011, construction commenced for the replacement of the Northern State Parkway bridge over Route 110. The original bridge is 63 years old. The project was budgeted for $56,000,000 and is expected to be completed in winter of 2013 and 2014.
Long Island's tallest point is Jayne's Hill near Melville, with an elevation of 400.9 feet (122.2 m) above sea level.

Sailor's Snug Harbor
Info provided by Wikipedia.
Sailors' Snug Harbor, also known as Sailors Snug Harbor or Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden or, informally, Snug Harbor, is a collection of architecturally significant 19th-century buildings set in an 83-acre park along the Kill Van Kull on the north shore of Staten Island in New York City, United States.[4] It was once a home for aged sailors. Some of the buildings and the grounds are used by arts organizations under the umbrella of the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden.
Sailors' Snug Harbor includes 26 Greek Revival, Beaux Arts, Italianate and Victorian style buildings. The site is considered Staten Island's crown jewel[5] and an incomparable remnant of New York's 19th-century seafaring past.[6] It is a National Historic Landmark District.
Snug Harbor was founded through a bequest after the death of Revolutionary War soldier and ship master Captain Robert Richard Randall, namesake of the nearby neighborhood of Randall Manor. Randall left his country estate in Manhattan, bounded by Fifth Avenue, Broadway, 10th Street, and the southern side of 8th Street adjacent to what is now Washington Square, to build an institution to care for aged, decrepit and worn-out seamen. Randall's disappointed heirs contested the will extensively, delaying the opening of the sailors' home for decades. By the time the will challenge was settled, the once-rural land around the Manhattan estate had become well-developed. Snug Harbor's trustees (appointed by Randall's will, they included the mayor of New York City, the president and vice president of the Marine Society, senior ministers of the Episcopal and Presbyterian Churches, the head of the Chamber of Commerce, and the chancellor of the State) decided to maximize the profits on the Manhattan property. They changed the proposed site of the institution to another piece of land bequeathed by Randall: a 130-acre plot on Staten Island overlooking the Kill Van Kull.[7][8]
Sailors' Snug Harbor finally opened in 1833, the country's first home for retired merchant seamen. It began with a single building, now the centerpiece in the row of five Greek Revival temple-like buildings on the New Brighton waterfront.[9] From 1867 to 1884, Captain Thomas Melville, a retired sea captain and brother of Moby-Dick author Herman Melville, was governor of Snug Harbor.[10] In 1890, Captain Gustavus Trask, the governor of Snug Harbor, built a Renaissance Revival church, the Randall Memorial Chapel and, next to it, a music hall, both designed by Robert W. Gibson.[9] At its peak in the late 19th century, about 1,000 retired sailors lived at Snug Harbor, then one of the wealthiest charities in New York. Its Washington Square area properties yielded a surplus exceeding the retirement home's costs by $100,000 a year.[9]
By the mid-20th century, however, Snug Harbor was in financial difficulty. Once-grand structures fell into disrepair, and some were demolished; the ornate white-marble Randall Memorial Church was torn down in 1952. With the arrival of the Social Security system in the 1930s, demand for accommodation for old sailors declined; by the mid-1950s, fewer than 200 residents remained.
In the 1960s, the institution's trustees proposed to redevelop the site with high-rise buildings; the new New York City Landmarks Commission stepped forward to save the remaining buildings, designating them landmark structures, and listing them on the National Register of Historic Places. A series of legal battles ensued, but the validity of landmark designation was ultimately upheld and it was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965.[3][11] In the 1970s, the trustees moved the institution to Sea Level, North Carolina and sold the Staten Island site to the City of New York.[9] Today, Randall's Trust no longer operates a retirement home, but the Trustees of the Sailors' Snug Harbor in the City of New York continues its work, using funds from the endowment to help mariners all over the country. Its office is at 40 Exchange Place, Suite 1701 NY, NY 10005.
On September 12, 1976, the Snug Harbor Cultural Center was opened to the public. In 2008, the Cultural Center and the Staten Island Botanical Garden merged to become the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden.[12]
The Sailors' Snug Harbor Archives are preserved at the Stephen B. Luce Library at SUNY Maritime College in the Bronx.
A station on the now-defunct North Shore Branch of the Staten Island Railway bore the name Sailors Snug Harbor; a retaining wall and stairways from the station still exist. Now, the S40 travels from and to the St. George Terminal, stopping at Snug Harbor's front gate.

SUMMARY
=======
Manhattan (), often referred to locally as the City, is the most densely populated borough of New York City, its economic and administrative center, its cultural identifier, and its historical birthplace. The borough is coextensive with New York County, one of the original counties of the U.S. state of New York. The borough consists mostly of Manhattan Island, bounded by the Hudson, East, and Harlem rivers; several small adjacent islands; and Marble Hill, a small neighborhood now on the U.S. mainland, physically connected to the Bronx and separated from the rest of Manhattan by the Harlem River. Manhattan Island is divided into three informally bounded components, each aligned with its long axis: Lower, Midtown, and Upper Manhattan.
Manhattan is often described as the cultural, financial, media, and entertainment capital of the world, and the borough hosts the United Nations Headquarters. Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world, and Manhattan is home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization: the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Many multinational media conglomerates are based in Manhattan, and the borough has been the setting for numerous books, films, and television shows. Manhattan is historically documented to have been purchased by Dutch colonists from Native Americans in 1626 for 60 guilders, which equals roughly US$1050 in current terms. Manhattan real estate has since become among the most expensive in the world, with the value of Manhattan Island, including real estate, estimated to exceed US$3 trillion in 2013; median residential property sale prices in Manhattan approximated US$1,600 per square foot ($17,000/m2) as of 2018, with Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan commanding the highest retail rents in the world, at US$3,000 per square foot ($32,000/m2) in 2017.Manhattan traces its origins to a trading post founded by colonists from the Dutch Republic in 1624 on Lower Manhattan; the post was named New Amsterdam in 1626. The territory and its surroundings came under English control in 1664 and were renamed New York after King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York. New York, based in present-day Manhattan, served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to the Americas by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is a world symbol of the United States and its ideals of liberty and peace. Manhattan became a borough during the consolidation of New York City in 1898.
New York County is the United States' second-smallest county by land area (larger only than Kalawao County, Hawaii), and is also the most densely populated U.S. county. It is also one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with a census-estimated 2017 population of 1,664,727 living in a land area of 22.83 square miles (59.13 km2), or 72,918 residents per square mile (28,154/km2), higher than the density of any individual U.S. city. On business days, the influx of commuters increases this number to over 3.9 million, or more than 170,000 people per square mile (65,600/km2). Manhattan has the third-largest population of New York City's five boroughs, after Brooklyn and Queens, and is the smallest borough in terms of land area. Many districts and landmarks in Manhattan are well known, as New York City received a record 62.8 million tourists in 2017, and Manhattan hosts three of the world's 10 most-visited tourist attractions in 2013: Times Square, Central Park, and Grand Central Terminal. The borough hosts many prominent bridges, such as the Brooklyn Bridge; skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building; and parks, such as Central Park. Chinatown incorporates the highest concentration of Chinese ...
CHESTER A. ARTHUR - WikiVidi Documentary
Chester Alan Arthur was an American attorney and politician who served as the 21st president of the United States from 1881 to 1885; he succeeded James A. Garfield upon the latter's assassination. At the outset, Arthur struggled to overcome a slightly negative reputation, which stemmed from his early career in politics as part of New York's Republican political machine. He succeeded by embracing the cause of civil service reform. His advocacy for, and subsequent enforcement of, the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act was the centerpiece of his administration. Arthur was born in Fairfield, Vermont, grew up in upstate New York, and practiced law in New York City. He served as quartermaster general in the New York Militia during the American Civil War. Following the war, he devoted more time to Republican politics and quickly rose in the political machine run by New York Senator Roscoe Conkling. Appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant to the lucrative and politically powerful post of Col...
