Joe Biden Visits Stonewall Inn in New York City
Joe Biden paid a visit Tuesday to the Stonewall Inn ahead of the 50th anniversary of an uprising that helped spark the gay rights movement.
The 2020 Democratic presidential candidate and former vice president spent about 30 minutes at the New York City tavern. He mingled with patrons, went behind the bar and took selfies with visitors.
“When people had the courage to come out and stand up and speak, say who they were, all of a sudden people realized, ‘Whoa, these folks are just like me,’” Biden said. “And I’m really proud of the folks in here and the courage it took for what they did.”
The bar is a reincarnation of the original Stonewall, which was the site of an infamous police raid in 1969.
At the time, police crackdowns on gay bars were commonplace, but at the Stonewall Inn, patrons and protesters resisted the officers.
Street protests continued for several days.
The bar is marking the anniversary of the uprising on June 28.
A park across from the Stonewall Inn is now a national monument to gay rights.

New York City Mayoral Debate (Pt 4) - Bill de Blasio vs Joe Lhota Debate 2013
NEW YORK -- Democrat Bill de Blasio and Republican Joe Lhota met in their first debate ahead of next month's New York City Mayoral election in our Channel 7 studios.
The debate covered a range of topics from crime to income inequality to the gridlock in Washington and the continuing government shutdown.
The candidates offered very different visions for the future of New York City, disagreeing on matters ranging from public safety, to public housing, to tax hikes.
Lhota is the former head of the city's transit agency and a one-time deputy mayor. He opened Tuesday's debate by stressing that his experience means he could take office with no learning curve whatsoever.
My experience is vastly different from my opponent's, I've got more direct management in the City of New York, I was the budget director, I was the deputy Mayor for Operations, Governor Andrew Cuomo asked me and I accepted the position as chairman and CEO of the MTA, and I've spent much more time in the private sector. What's really important to understand is that I've been there before and I've done it, Lhota said.
De Blasio countered that his administration would reach out to the grassroots of all communities, but also touted his own experiences.
I think because I have offered forceful vision and real experience I've won the endorsement of President Obama, President Clinton, Secretary Clinton, Governor Cuomo, people in many cases I've had the opportunity to work for. Yes I was the regional director for the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development covering all of New York State all of New Jersey representing President Clinton and Secretary Cuomo, de Blasio said.
They also debated on their ideas for taxation in the city, who should be taxed and what those taxes should be used for. Lhota called de Blasio's plan for taxing the wealthiest New Yorkers unrealistic.
Look, Bill de Blasio is a career politician and every career politician that says they are only going to raise taxes on the wealthy ends up also raising taxes on the middle class. It's never happened anywhere in the country where they've just raised taxes on the wealthy, believe me, and believe me when I say this, he will not stop during his entire career, as a member of City Council he voted twice to increase the property taxes, there wasn't a fee or fine that he didn't vote for, there is a record of continual going back and taking money away from the middle class, it's not right, and he's right we are on the verge of losing the middle class because of the actions that he is taking, Lhota said.
Likewise, Mr. de Blasio called Lhota's response typical Republican rhetoric and says he wants to use tax money to fix the city's educational system by creating universal Pre-K.
Mr. Lhota's plan is to give tax breaks to the wealthy, tax breaks to the corporations and that is classic Republican trickle down and I promise that is not going to help us. Let's talk about one tax and one tax only. If people make a half million or more for the next five years so we can fix our schools, that is a fair tax and it's something we need, de Blasio responded.
Another hot button topic was Stop and Frisk and whether or not if elected mayor they would keep Ray Kelly on as police commissioner.
A federal judge has said that the way the Bloomberg administration has used Stop and Frisk was unconstitutional. When every one of us takes our oath of office in public service we say we are going to uphold the United States constitution. So it's very clear to me, not only is the overuse of Stop and Frisk tearing the police and community apart, it's not legal, it's not appropriate and we have to move away from it. I think I'm right in saying that Mr. Lhota would want Ray Kelly to stay as police commissioner even though Ray Kelly has been the architect of the overuse of Stop and Frisk that has had such a negative effect on the relationship between police and community and so many communities of color, de Blasio said.
You're absolutely right I'll keep Ray Kelly if he wants to stay as police commissioner. I actually believe that what he's been able to do with reducing crime with 7,000 less police officers is extraordinary. Ray hasn't decided whether he's going to stay or not, but I'll be honest with you. I will not bash the man who has lowered crime to levels that we never seen in this city before. We should be thanking him not bashing him, Lhota said.
Lhota is running out of time to cut into Democrat Bill de Blasio's lead, which a series of recent polls shows is hovering near 50 points.
Lhota needed a victory to reverse de Blasio's momentum as he seeks to become the first Democrat to be elected mayor since 1989. Lhota has lacked financial backing and has also been dogged by associations to the national Republicans, who polls suggest are being blamed for the federal government shutdown.
Jack Skuller on The Hollywood Stalker
Jack Skuller (born Jack Nathan Skuller on January 26, 1996) is an American rock and pop singer/songwriter, musician and recording artist. On June 21, 2012 it was announced that Skuller would participate in Radio Disney's N.B.T. (Next Big Thing) Season 5.
At age 11, Skuller wrote his first fully realized song, the rockabilly tinged Love Is A Drum. On September 6, 2009, at age 13 Skuller won first place in the teen division performing the song in the NJ 101.5 FM radio sponsored Big Joe Jersey Talent Show in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ.
A demo of Love Is A Drum was produced by Daniel Rey, known for his work with the punk band the Ramones. The recording featured Nada Surf drummer Ira Elliot. Hoboken, NJ indie label Bar/None Records released the rockabilly tinged song as a limited edition single on April 20, 2010. The Examiner called it arguably the best single released by anyone this year. The New York Post called Skuller a mini Jack White.
Skuller made his television debut performing Love Is A Drum live on FOX TV's Good Day New York on September 2, 2010.
In December 2011, Skuller's song You'll Never Take My Holiday was selected for an ASPCA holiday email campaign.
In 2012, Skuller was featured on Channel One News seen by 6 million students across the United States. On May 8, 2012 Skuller was invited to perform to over 700 New York area high school students at GRAMMY Career Day sponsored by the GRAMMY Foundation. In July 2012, Skuller was the musical guest in the first episode of Meow Meow Music, a series on Amy Poehler's youtube network Smart Girls Channel. Skuller is also a regular guest performer with the acclaimed bi-monthly tribute series The Loser's Lounge held bi-monthly at Joe's Pub in New York City.
In October 2012, Radio Disney N.B.T. will release Skuller's songs S.U.R.E. as well as a re-record of Love Is A Drum on Walt Disney Records. The songs are produced by Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount known as ZK Productions whose credits include Cartel, Mayday Parade, All Time Low and the Ready Set.
Skuller describes his sound as 'vintage-pop' with a mixture of classic rock-and-roll. You hear pop in the lyrics, like a Beatles kind of pop, and then the melodies go from 50's influences to The Black Keys.

More information about New York City and where we went below!
New York City comprises 5 boroughs sitting where the Hudson River meets the Atlantic Ocean. At its core is Manhattan, a densely populated borough that’s among the world’s major commercial, financial and cultural centers. Its iconic sites include skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building and sprawling Central Park. Broadway theater is staged in neon-lit Times Square.
We saw the Empire State building where I got some cool time lapses. The Statue of Liberty where I also took some cool time lapses. Other Time lapses in the video feature 360 view of Manhattan Island, Grand Central Station, and more. Staring in this video is my younger sister Halle and my older sister Taylor. The theme and inspiration of this video is the connection between a family coming closer together and growing like the dandelion in the video.
The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is an 80-year-old Norway Spruce tree from State College, PA (my hometown). My mother watched it get cut down as she took photos! It was right on College Avenue just across the street from my neighborhood, Clover Highlands. The tree stood 75 feet tall, 50 feet wide and weighs 13 tons. After New York City, the tree will be sent to Habitat for Humanity to become part of a local home. How does the tree get picked? Since 2010, that man has been Erik Pauze, a longtime Rockefeller groundskeeper who became head gardener when 26-year veteran David Murbach died. Pauze tours the tri-state area throughout the year, hoping to find a “worthy specimen.” The tree, of course, needs to be big (trees less than 70 feet tall are rarely selected) and sturdy enough to hold the weight of the lights and stand strong in bad weather. A classic Christmas tree facade with straight, symmetrical branches is a plus.
The Empire State Building is a 102-story skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Did you know that it was built in one year during The Great Depression? Designed by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon, the building has a roof height of 1,250 feet (380 m) and stands a total of 1,454 feet (443.2 m) tall, including its antenna. Its name is derived from Empire State, the nickname of New York. As of 2017 the building is the 5th-tallest completed skyscraper in the United States and the 28th-tallest in the world. It is also the 6th-tallest freestanding structure in the Americas.
The Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World; French: La Liberté éclairant le monde) is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor in New York City, in the United States. My family went on a cruise to see the Statue of Liberty where I was able to get some cool time lapses from the boat. The copper statue, a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States, was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and built by Gustave Eiffel. The statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886.
The Cruise that we took was very coo and the company was Circle Line. The trip had stunning panoramic views of midtown and lower Manhattan. There was Insightful narration by Circle Line’s world famous guides and it is top rated on TripAdvisor. Also there was Free Circle Line Skyline Navigator App with narration in seven languages and enhanced content. There was an Onboard café with a freshly prepared menu of sandwiches, salads and snacks + full bar serving up hot and cold beverages, beer, wine and cocktails. Onboard amenities including outdoor deck space, heated/air conditioned indoor seating with large windows made for sightseeing, and restrooms. It is also free for children 3 and under.
I was also able to get a cool Time lapse while on the cruise of Manhattan island. Manhattan is the most densely populated of New York City’s 5 boroughs. It's mostly made up of Manhattan Island, bounded by the Hudson, East and Harlem rivers. Among the world’s major commercial, financial and cultural centers, it’s the heart of “the Big Apple.” Its iconic sites include skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building, neon-lit Times Square and the theaters of Broadway.
We also saw Ellis Island which is where our ancestor Grandma Sooter came over from Switzerland by herself on a boat when she was a little girl. Ellis Island, in Upper New York Bay, was the gateway for over 12 million immigrants to the U.S. as the United States' busiest immigrant inspection station for over 60 years from 1892 until 1954. Construction began in 1795.

Gypsy Joe ( Gilberto Melendez)1933-2016
Gilberto Meléndez (December 2, 1933 – June 14, 2016) was a Puerto Rican professional wrestler better known under the ring name Gypsy Joe. While attaining much of his United States success in the Tennessee area, Meléndez also gained a following in Japan. He is perhaps best known in the wrestling industry for his remarkable longevity, with a career spanning seven decades, as well as his highly physical brawling style and tough reputation which made him an early pioneer of the hardcore wrestling scene.
Meléndez was born in the municipality of Villalba in Puerto Rico and then moved to Tullahoma, Tennessee where he gained much of his US career success. Meléndez began his wrestling career in 1951 at age 18. During a lengthy tenure in his native Puerto Rico, he went under various monikers and learned the ropes with the likes of Pedro Morales and Carlos Colón Sr.. Meléndez made his United States debut at Sunnyside Garden in Long Island, New York in 1963. Primarily using the name Gypsy Joe by this point, he mainly worked for Nick Gulas and later Jerry Jarrett in the Southeastern region, particularly Mid-Southern Wrestling. During his Gulas run, he was often teamed with heels like Tojo Yamamoto, with whom he formed the No Pain Train, and The Cuban Assassin. He also joined forces with Frank Martinez to be collectively known as the Blue Infernos. The masked duo would attain tag team championships on numerous occasions. By the 1970s, Gypsy Joe was a local star of Chattanooga, Tennessee, regularly performing at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium on Saturdays and appearing on local WDEF-TV. His career wasn't limited to the South, however, winning championships around the country as well as in Canada’s Stampede Wrestling. However, with the rise of national promotions like the World Wrestling Federation and World Championship Wrestling in the 1980s, the local industry that Joe had developed a career in began to dwindle. He would not be among those fortunate enough to find success in the major US promotions. Joe eventually made his way overseas into the Japanese wrestling scene, to work for All Japan Pro Wrestling where his highly physical brawling style akin to The Shiek and Abdullah the Butcher was met with success. Bloody encounters with the likes of Mr. Pogo and a penchant for taunting his opponents to attack him with weapons earned Joe a strong reputation in the death match scene and helped solidify his cult following in the region. Despite his aging body, Joe remained active in Japan throughout the '80s and '90s where he also refereed and mentored upcoming stars of the hardcore style.
Gypsy Joe is known for his grueling longevity in the wrestling business, which spanned seven decades, as well as his innate toughness as a hardcore brawler. According to legend, he was the first wrestler ever to jump successfully off a steel cage onto an opponent. Joe’s extensive career in Japan and participation in death matches solidified this fierce reputation, and his highly physical in-ring approach helped popularize the hardcore style.
After many taxing years in the ring, an elderly Gypsy Joe returned to the United States in the 2000s where he performed on the independent circuit primarily in the Southeast. In 2001, he attended the International Wrestling Association's Juicio Final event held in his native Puerto Rico, where he received the recognition of the promotion. In April 2003, a 69-year-old Joe faced New Jack in an infamous hardcore match before a small crowd. Due to Joe's no-selling throughout the match and headbutting New Jack hard on the nose, New Jack legitimately attacked Joe with a chain, a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire, and several other weapons. With audience members angrily cursing Jack, the match ended in a chaotic no-contest and became a widely circulated viral video.
During this period, although mainly working in his home state of Tennessee, the haggard Gypsy Joe maintained his reputation as a resilient veteran with indie appearances throughout the US. On July 30, 2005, he was enlisted as the special guest referee for CZW Tournament of Death IV held in New Castle, Delaware. The tournament featured various performers that credit Joe for pioneering the in-ring style they now emulate. In 2007, WWE Magazine named Gypsy Joe the world's oldest wrestler at the age of 73. On February 13, 2010, he appeared in the corner of Eddie Kingston and Necro Butcher as Butcher's mentor for their No Rules tag team match at the Ring of Honor 8th Anniversary Show in New York City. Finally, at nearly 79 years of age, Joe wrestled his last match at the Gypsy Joe retirement show on January 7, 2011. Held in Tullahoma, Tennessee by the Southern Wrestling Federation, the bout marked an end to a career which began 60 years prior.
Gypsy Joe passed away on June 14, 2016, from complications following an extended illness at the age of 82.

Sloppy joes is a known, proven by the wait time in school canteens throughout every city and town in the United States. Composed of ground beef fries cooked in tomato sauce and served on a hamburger bun, this popular sandwich can be very tasty when seasoned and well prepared. But a bad Sloppy joes has a similar mystery meat proverbial reputation. When the inimitable sandwich done right, it is a little sweet, a little spicy and very tasty. It was properly cooked until the sauce is thick and rich contrast to the cafeteria nightmare of some students of the primary school. In fact, there are small restaurants across the country who have made their own version of Sloppy joes sandwich on the menu. Ingredients may vary slightly with a little cheese, some use the sweet bread or roll instead of bread, and many other variations, but the overall presentation reflects the unmistakable name and is nothing if not neglected. A particularly unique version of the Sloppy joes has its origins in the state of New Jersey. If you have had one of the more traditional versions of this Sloppy joes recipe, you're in for a big surprise if you order one in New Jersey. New Jersey Sloppy joes is no resemblance. A sandwich with certain kinds of sausages, cheese and Thousand Island or Russian dressing, and even coleslaw, this Sloppy joes sandwich is more of a Joe Ruben. If you ask New Jersean more about the roots of the famous sandwich SJ, you might hear a tale that tells the story of the original Sloppy joes, presented at the South Orange Delicatessen Mayor in the 30, but ham, tongue and the Swiss version is not one that is famous throughout the country. A more likely theory about where the version of ground beef appeared puts point in a bar in Havana called Sloppy joes hold your breath. If you visit the section of Greenwich Village in New York City West and go somewhere for Cuban food, you may have a similar sandwich find made of cooked beef strands shredded in a tomato sauce and served very familiar based on a small bread.

In part, that's meant diving headfirst into big, intractable problems and major breaking news. But one of my favorite things about writing this newsletter each day has been exploring all the other stories of the state, and sharing them with you. After growing up knowing his face, I finally talked with James Saito, a Japanese-American actor, about Asian representation onscreen. I went to see the Super Bloom in the desert, and I wrote about what it took to catch a glimpse of Lori Loughlin in court. I learned about how reviving indigenous food practices could help fight hunger in the Klamath River Basin.A professor told me about how a deadly explosion in the Bay Area during World War II set off a chain of events that would push the military to desegregate, and a bar owner told me about the nuances of efforts to preserve San Francisco's L.G.B.T.Q. spaces. I looked at Smokey Bear's legacy on his 75th birthday and raided a trove of old ads to mark the occasion. With your help, we made a California playlist on Spotify, and I got to talk about it in real life with an inveterate New Yorker, Jon Pareles (who is also The Times's chief pop music critic).I mention all this because, now, we want to check in with you: What do you want to know more about in the coming year?
