The Story of Mission San Luis
Orientation video to Mission San Luis: Florida’s Apalachee-Spanish Living History Museum and archaeological site in Tallahassee, FL, USA.
From 1656 to 1704, San Luis served as the principal village of the Apalachees and was the Spaniards' westernmost military, religious, and administrative capital in La Florida. Mission San Luis was one of over 100 mission settlements established in Spanish Florida between the 1560s and 1690s. It was home to more than 1,400 residents, including a powerful Apalachee chief and the Spanish deputy governor.
Today Mission San Luis is the only reconstructed Spanish mission in Florida. As a living history museum it is devoted to sharing the stories of its former Apalachee and Spanish residents. Knowledge of life at San Luis over three centuries ago comes from intensive archaeological and historical research—the site is the most thoroughly investigated mission in the southeastern United States.

Mission San Luis de Apalachee was a Spanish Franciscan mission built in 1633 in the Florida Panhandle, two miles west of the present-day Florida Capitol Building in Tallahassee, Florida. It was located in the descendent settlement of Anhaica capital of Apalachee Province. The mission was part of Spain's effort to colonize the region, and convert the Timucuan and Apalachee Indians to Christianity. The mission lasted until 1704, when it was evacuated and destroyed to prevent its use by an approaching militia of Creek Indians and South Carolinians.

Cannon Demonstration Mission San Luis 3-8-2014
Cannon demonstration at Mission San Luis, Tallahassee, Florida. They interpret the life of the Spanish mission, church, fort, and Apalachee Indian village around the year 1690. They did an excellent job on the cannon firing. I have participated with the state parks black powder safety program, and think that their demonstration was pretty flawless. If only it had been as good last weekend at Natural Bridge. I did not get the beginning of the demonstration filmed because I thought my camera was turned on when it wasn't. But that is okay since most of you watching this would probably find most of the drill slow and dull. I think that keeping the video short is preferred. So we have a good & short video of a cannon firing, which is what I wanted to get.

The Apalachee massacre was a series of raids by English colonists from the Province of Carolina and their Indian allies against a largely pacific population of Apalachee Indians in northern Spanish Florida that took place during Queen Anne's War in 1704.Against limited Spanish and Indian resistance, a network of missions was destroyed; most of the population either was killed or captured, fled to larger Spanish and French outposts, or voluntarily joined the English. The only major event of former Carolina Governor James Moore's expedition was the Battle of Ayubale, which marked the only large-scale resistance to the English raids.Significant numbers of the Apalachee, unhappy with the conditions they lived in under the Spanish, simply abandoned their towns and joined Moore's expedition.
