Infinity of Nations, National Museum of the American Indian in New York
INFINITY OF NATIONS
Art and History in the Collections of the National Museum of the American Indian
This ongoing exhibition presents more than 700 works of art from throughout Native North, Central, and South America. This unparalleled assemblage of American Indian cultural material represents the tremendous breadth of the collections and the remarkable richness of Native traditional and contemporary art. It also explores the historic importance of a significant number of these deeply cultural, profoundly social objects.
The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian in New York, the George Gustav Heye Center, features exhibitions, performances, films and symposia that present the diversity of the Native people of the Americas and the strength and continuity of their cultures from the earliest times to the present.
The National Museum of the American Indian in New York is located at One Bowling Green, across from Battery Park, in the historic Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House.
Washington-National Museum of the American Indian 2016
The name should be changed, of course, but anyone with an appreciation for Native American history, and/or the humility to realize that American history does NOT begin with Columbus landing in the Bahamas, will not be disappointed.

Today we visit the old US Customs building in Lower Manhattan which houses the Nation Museum of the American Indian, a Smithsonian run collection of Native American artifacts. The collection in this museum is over 800,000 pieces large and is categorized by region and tribe. The museum also has a few temporary exhibits. Right now there is a great exhibit displaying modern Native American fashion.

Former US Customs House, NYC Museum Of The American Indian
Museum is now part of Smithsonian as Museum of American Indian. Considered the most impressive Beaux Arts building in New York. Beaux is an architectural style an architectural style defined by three (3) dimensions and popular around the turn of the 20th century. It originally opened as a Customs House, a tax collection agency of the federal government, where they collected taxes or duties imposed on goods entering the country, and the primary way the US raised money prior to the imposition of the income tax. Sculptures outside represent Four Continents by Daniel Chester French, the same sculptor as the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC)...from left to right, facing the building: Asia, North America, Europe, and Africa.

USA: NEW YORK: NATIVE AMERICAN INDIANS
English/Nat
Native American Indians have become one of the fastest growing minorities in New York where they've been flocking over the past decade in search of better jobs.
Nearly 35-thousand Indians now live in the New York area ... but for many life in the Big Apple makes it hard to preserve the old traditions.
The skyscrapers and hustle and bustle of downtown New York are hardly synonymous with America's native Indian population.
But its here that the new arrivals to the Big Apple are striving to preserve the traditions of their ancient civilization.
At theatres like this, small groups of native American Indians regularly meet, to practise the ceremonial dances and rituals which have been handed down through the generations.
Thousands of Indians living in the New York area may not be as close to nature as their ancestors, but they are determined to keep their culture alive. New York is home to descendants from 60 different Indian nations, each one with a rich heritage to preserve.
SOUNDBITE:
Dance and music is a very essential part of what the Indian people are all about, as a part of their spirit. And I think, you know, when you think of all the difficulties and hardships the Indian people have gone through in this country, music and dance has always been part of what they do, part of what's kept them going.
SUPER CAPTION: Louis Mofsie, director, Thunderbird American Indian Dancers
The Thunderbird American Indian dance troupe, organized over 30 years ago, holds monthly pow-wows. Researchers gathered unique regional dances from around the country so that they could be preserved and passed on.
New York's harsh environment can make things difficult.
SOUNDBITE:
Well, the environment of course is different, because you have a concrete environment versus a grass, and woodlands and trees and prairies environment. But what we've managed to do is have our own community.
SUPER CAPTION: Tonya Gonnella Fishman
SOUNDBITE:
My father was called Tonto, my mother was called a witch and I learned to fight at a very early age on the streets.
SUPER CAPTION: Muriel Migel
Along with the dancing, there is an effort to pass on other skills - such as bead work - to the next generation.
SOUNDBITE:
I think today also you'll find that, among the young people, there's a greater interest in learning from the elders a lot of things that they know that they've forgotten or don't know and they're trying very hard to get the elders to tell them about it before they pass on so that they'll have that information.
SUPER CAPTION: Louis Mofsie, director, Thunderbird American Indian Dancers
Whether the traditions are practiced out on the reservation, or here in the urban sprawl, these people are determined to pass them on to their children.

Always Becoming - NMAI Museum
Artist Nora Naranjo-Morse (Santa Clara Pueblo) made history as the first Native American woman to create an outdoor sculpture in Washington, D.C., titled Always Becoming.
Built on site during the summer of 2007, the family of five clay sculptures is made of organic, nontoxic materials. Intended to erode over time, these ever-changing works of art will together reflect messages of growth, transformation, and Native peoples' relationship with the land.

The REDress Project at the National Museum of the American Indian
To commemorate Women’s History Month, the National Museum of the American Indian presented The REDress Project, an outdoor art installation by artist Jaime Black (Métis). Shown in the United States for the first time, the installation of empty red dresses centers on the issue of missing or murdered indigenous women. Black hopes to draw attention to the gendered and racialized nature of violent crimes against Native women and to evoke a presence through the marking of absence.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian opened in 2004 on the National Mall in Washington, DC. We visit the “Nation to Nation” exhibit, focusing on treaties between the United States and Native Americans. Curator Suzan Shown Harjo explains that in the late 1700s the fledgling federal government made treaties with both the Muskogee and Six Nations of the Iroquois. She also describes how the relationship between the government and native people has both changed and endured.
